I made this Orion harp in my woodshop and thought I'd share it with the community. I realize the glare makes it a bit hard to see so when I get the time i'll upload a clearer pic.
This is excellent. I shall assimilate it into my headcanon as a traditional Orion instrument.
Tell me if you could, please, how does one position oneself to play this harp?
...Oh, baby, you know, I've really got to leave you / Oh, I can hear it callin 'me / I said don't you hear it callin' me the way it used to do?...

I modeled it after the musical instument Charles Napier used in the epsiode "The Way to Eden" So it would be played in a similiar fashion as he played the prop in that episode. As for how it operates as far as Star Trek tech is concerned, I'm assuming it utilizes a harmonic field that duplicates what an electric guitar's pickups do.
I'll admit I read the thread as "Orion Help" and I assumed someone needed help with something Orion related in STO, but in my defense (if it's defense?) at the moment I'm quite drunk. :P
So you can imagine my suprise when I came here and saw this awesome instrument! That's some skills you've got there! Just like sander233, I'm also assimilating this in my headcanon as an Orion instrument!
Thanks for the compliments folks. I had a lot of fun making the Orion harp and enjoyed the challenge of designing it. Like many of the Star trek races there isn't much to go on as far as cultural items so I incorprorated some of the designs of the ships and clothing into the harp.
Basically it is an item to help flesh out a race many enjoy playing on here. The two dimensional aspect of the "bad guys" on Star Trek takes away more than provides plot value in my opinion. The Klingons in TNG were much more interesting than what we had in TOS and added entertainment value to the franchise. What we have on Orions canon wise is next to nothing and what we do have is ridiculous, really hot looking women with mind controlling phermones would already be ruling the galaxy.
Music I believe would be universal entertaiment. We know Vulcans have musical intruments because Spock played something that was harp like with the space hippies and I believe there were a few more episodes of various alien races playing something similiar. So it is not a strech to assume Orions as well would enjoy music and have instruments to play it, we know they have opera.. There would be far more to them as a race than being pirates, raiders, and slavers. Its a shame that STO had the opportunity to expand on Orion culture and past it up in favor of the two dimensional bad guy aspect.
Here's the Klingon version. It contains some flaws. Women, kids, and animals bugging me at inopportune times tends to make me mess up. Also it was the first one I made so I learned a few things from making it that helped smooth the process of making the Orion one. This one is for you Klingon fans.

I had to take more than one picture of this in my study because my cat kept photo bombing it.
