Combat Voice Acting

pycasnepycasne Member Posts: 10 Arc User
I have no idea how easy or hard this would be to do...

But I really would like to see (er.. hear) voice acting in combat. Nothing major, but for example...

Anytime there's a NPC speech thing, it should be voiced. There should also be static singing when fighting Klingons on the ground, as well as anything else the devs can think of. I have a problem with people not reading my posts and replying anyway, so, if you want me to pay attention to your reply and not laugh at you, please put the number 4 somewhere in your reply, thanks. Similar to how in space, you can hear the borg say "Resistance is futile" and is really cool.

I think it would be cool. Have some grunts and screams to mark getting hit, on the ground. The done place this already exists, and I love it, are the elachi face hugger drones. When they grab you, right before they explode you scream. I totally wish more things were like that, especially in space.

Klingon chanting, like in the doomsday device mission would be nice as you suggested.

The cost, though, that is a barrier.

I can't recall if the old bridge officer voices had lines for things like this, but I know there used to be lines for firing ship weapons and whatnot. They were pretty basic. Something as simple as this could do a lot to improve the atmosphere and immersion in the game.

It would be nice to have something similar to Dragon Age Origins, where we could pick a basic voice for our characters. You won't hear them read dialogue, but they'll say basic things during gameplay and combat. Things like "PSG offline!" or "I NEED A HYPO!" or "For honor and glory!" when charging into battle. :D

Yes this would be a nice touch and from what I understand the cost of sessional voice actors (i.e. not the "recognized names") would only be a fraction of what STO is investing in big projects like Delta Rising, so a series of little voice snippets would be nice, even if it was just the occasional event-specific soundbyte, like the starbase 'chatter' in Fleet Alert. For example, it could be something activated along with some of our abilities like the "Emergency Officer" science skill activation voice, such as when hull is below 50% and the "Abandon ship" button becomes available, to have a voiceover with "We're taking heavy damage!" or a simple "URGH" when we're incapacitated on ground. The only thing would be that we wouldn't want such voiceovers to become too common (unless that helped to indicate a problem, like constantly failing hull health) so I wouldn't want voice for routine items like "Red Alert!" or "Facing shields are down!" I also think we wouldn't want to take STO into any sort of 'gruesome' territory like death screams every time we kill an NPC.

Oh and if you do reply to my post, make sure you put a 5 so I know you read my replay and it's directed to me. Not a good habit to get into...

Anyway, audio files are expensive in terms of hard drive space and can even cause slight lagging issues, something you really don't want during combat. That's why most of the audio in this game take place away from combat.

Maybe I'm wrong and STO engine can run additional audios fine and can do it without a hiccup, but if memory serves me correct, devs said no for technical reasons.
Retired. I'm now in search for that perfect space anomaly.

In space, no one should be able to hear you fire your phasers...

    5 :P

If space was a problem, then I wonder why Cryptic kept all the old bridge officer voice files in the game for four years. They got rid of exploration. They could save more space removing the voice files too. They don't seem to have any plans to use these again. At all.

Thanks for the great responses, all 5 of you (wink)

I'm surprised I'm actually getting a good response for one of my ideas for once. I guess I'm not the only one who noticed how quiet combat is for having around 15 people all getting shot with phasers.

Edit: I'd like to mention you can turn off voice acting in this game by going to your options, in case this would lag some lower end computers.

Unless phasers send out a b flat, which was recently a sound detected after traveling 250 million light years through space. http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/universe/black_hole_sound.html

Also, being very close to the source of a sound even allows them to be heard at volumes the human ear can register.
