I don't know if I am the only one, but I'm really not fond of the rename from "Unique" quality on gear to the new "Epic" quality. Honestly "Epic" is excessively used in the English language and has more of a fantasy usage than a science fiction usage.
Cryptic, could you please consider renaming "Unique" quality to "Legendary" quality? Legendary within science fiction games has typically been applied to the best things within the game. It has been the tradition for at least the last two decades. Why change to fantasy terminology now? This may seem a bit of a pointless nitpick in the grand scheme of things, but I'm really not fond of fantasy terminology in a Star Trek game.
Meh i agree legendary sounds alot cooler. i mean would you rather be bragging about you ship oh yea man all my tech is epic lvl, or aww yea man all my tech is legendary! i personality prefer the latter, though it overall matters little to me.

You mean like shields?
Anyway epic is more appropriate. Epic refers to the scale of a subject (being analogous to an epic) while Legendary refers to the actual presence of a long-standing popular mythos (ie. legends.) I doubt my gold torpedos will be worthy of song and story but they may be described as quite astonishingly good.

Well, actually I would just prefer "Gold" but I could see how certain individuals would confuse that with being a Gold subscriber. "Wait, I can only use this weapon if I'm a Gold subscriber? It says Gold on it."
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
Legendary has almost the same colloquial level of internet usage as Epic so the connotations are virtually the same ...
After all, you've single handedly (almost) saved the entire Alplha Quadrant time and time again (in game story wise anyway) so why shouldn't you have "Heroic" gear for your ship/you?

heroic too plain it should be godly... I'll see myself out.
if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.
Considering that Legends...er...are forms of Epics...renaming it from Epic to Legendary doesn't really change anything, does it? It's still going to have that fantasy angle going for it.
I get the whole trying to go with something familiar to MMO gamers, where the majority of MMOs are fantasy themed...but it would have been nifty had they worked some Treknobabble into the mix for the Quality of items.

None of them really fit Star Trek...and lol, they're also kind of a lie as the Rarity of the items has little to do with how Rare they actually are, meh.
very TRIBBLE - common
three quarters TRIBBLE - uncommon
half way TRIBBLE - rare
one quarter TRIBBLE - very rare
normal - ultra rare
godlike - epic
i dunno if that will be acceptable though.
was thinking on an edit but then again you dont hear many canon sourced names that could be useful in trek for item upgrade rarity. there is standard, unique and superior but not sure on the rest.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
I say keep it at Unique. At least for the first several months, not many will exist, so they will be sort of Unique for a while. And even then, not much stuff will get upgraded. The only things I can see being upgraded to Gold would be curiosity gear, like the TR-116.
I don't know if I am the only one, but I'm really not fond of the rename from "Unique" quality on gear to the new "Epic" quality. Honestly "Epic" is excessively used in the English language and has more of a fantasy usage than a science fiction usage.

Unique connotes one-of-a-kind. The thing about these unique items is that you could only equip one of those. now that you can equip far more that 1 item, they had to change that.

Cryptic sometimes pick terrible names. The new difficulty should be Nightmare. Gives people a sense of dread and relief when winning. The word Elite has lost all meaning in STO.
The gold gear should be either Legendary or Mythic a la Halo. Epic/Unique is lame.

I'd much rather it use more sensible terms a large navel organisation might use
I highly doubt the TYPE 45 destroyer is equipped with an "Epic" Gun system or a Legendary Propeller Shaft.
I'd rather see stuff Like "General Issue" or "Special Issue" or maybe "Developmental Prototype" and "Experimental Modification "
So your currently Common" Mk12 Phaser Beam array "could be upgraded with the upcomming system to a "Mk13 Phaser Array Experimental Modification "
Unique items shouldn't be "Legendary" or "Epic" , Warriors in the great Hall aren't singing great songs of my ships Warp core plasma injectors. This isn't Skyrim, I didn't get these Magical items Bestowed upon me by a Daedric Prince, these are technological Pieces of equipment Mass produced in Shipyards

Legendary would be consistent with how other games treat orange gear, which is a source of confusion here.
But, frankly, "legendary"/"mythic"/"epic"? None of those sound science fiction-y.
Imagine Geordi saying he's going to go install an epic phaser array. Or mythic. Or rare for that matter.
I think all the names sound off.
It would almost be better if they were:
Simple Complex Very Complex Sophisticated Ultra Sophisticated Prototype
pretty much all the gear discussed is complex and/or sophisticated.
the word "ultra" has no real place near a technical description.
its like a marketing gimmick on the level of calling something "X-tream"
Top secret is potentially the most hilarious of the names given that people will be trading and selling it, including between factions. I'm picturing someone saying that they're selling top secret phaser arrays in general chat and then envisioning twenty redshirts tackling the seller and placing them in a holding cell where Quinn comes down and court martials them on the spot.
The words "modified", "experimental", and "upgraded" are potentially confusing because those terms have other uses in the game. Some gear has the word "experimental" in it. It can't be words used in existing items or those items will have to be renamed.
"Ultra sophisticated" is a term people use.
Geordi might say, "We've installed some new ultra sophisticated phaser arrays."
He would likely NOT use the terms "customized" or "top secret" in the same sentence.
I'm just trying to think of the dialogue flow here.
well you could use ultra without it souning too silly its not too far fromt he word Super , I mean they made the Super Hornet and Super Lynx and those are serious military vehicles

"standard", "modified" and "upgraded" are beyond a doubt standard trek fare. saying the words are used in game pretty much works as a give-away to the terms being standard language.
and are still clearer than the contradictory mess we have now.
and definitely makes more sense than calling shuttles and BoPs "pets"...
i agree that 'top-secret' is poor though. couldn't think of something better. 'restricted' might be a better option.
suggesting that they wouldn't have described systems they encounter as "customised" is debatable. cirtainly as likely as use of the term "ultra-sophisticated". which is also really cheesy.
I can see something being called "customized" if it's legitimately customized. As-in, selected modifications.
I can't see it being called that if it has random modifications or is part of a commonly used class or upgrade of item.

it sounds so incredibly cheap somehow, especially because cryptic is using this term basically every third sentence.
