So as the title says im thinking about switching ships, im in a fleet tactical escort now with my fed tac and im having trouble deciding if I want to switch and what ship I want.
Im not a RPer or super high DPSer, I do really love my escort but I have been in it for soooo long I want to mix it up a little. I really like the avenger and how it looks and the background of it but im a little afraid it will be too much of a 180 dps play style wise. The heavy destroyer is a nice little ship wich much the same console and boff lay out as the tec escort plus im running full phaser right now and I have heard that it goes well with chimera.
Anyway I wanted to see if anyone had experience with both ships and could give me some advice. Thanks all
I have the Fleet versions of both ships. I'm using the Avenger now, for the way it performs. I'll use the Chimera in Delta Rising, because it can be upgraded for free, until I decide what my first Tier VI ship is going to be.
Until we know more about the Tier VI ships, the best advice I can give this close to the launch of the new expansion is to use the free ship, if you have it, rather than drop cash for an Avenger or Fleet Avenger that may look a lot less desirable once we get a detailed look of the new starships.

The first thing to keep in mind is that the Avenger is a Cruiser; so even though it handles great for a Cruiser it will feel slow and clunky to someone who is used to flying Escorts. So if you have a well-honed Escort technique you will probably need to adjust your play-style slightly to use a Cruiser.
As far as stock Chimera against stock Avenger, I would give the Avenger the edge. It can dish-out a lot of pain and take some hits. If you are only PvEing it is not really going to matter that much. Both ships will work and it really just comes down to what you enjoy flying around it. So pick the one which makes you happy.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
Chimera has the console that is actually useful by switching modes. the defense mode beam drains shields power then switch to offense mode for a mini phaser lance. way more useful than the avenger torpedo thing.
I went from those two to the risian corvette. it has a lot of promise
Both are good and versatile ships. I have both equipped and ready to go but I will stick to the Chimera for the expansion simply because it gets a free upgrade.
I love my Chimera (although, I recommend hull material 2 or 5 as it reduces the look of the deflector and makes all the difference for me.) The Chimera (to me) has one of the most useful consoles in the game. The universal slots make it incredibly flexible to the point of being one of the few classes that can work with any captain profession. The two powers (one for each mode) are both great AOE powers and since they don't share a cooldown, can almost be run back to back. Plus the recent removal of the power drain from Beam Overload also applied to Phaser Lotus.
I've actually been running it as a beamscort A2B build with decent results. I've also run it as a reasonably-survivable, GW-wielding, cannon build. It's incredibly flexible.
Comparing the Avenger to the Chimera? Avenger is a much much better looking ship.
Comparing the Avenger to those hideous T6 Intel ships? At least Avenger looks like a Starfleet ship.
Compared to many of the escorts in game, and most of the science ships, Avenger hands down.
There are very few ships in game better looking than Avenger, and that field narrows considerably when you discuss it in terms of only T5 ships.
ok, this is funny. a guy claiming a ship he likes is good looking to a guy who thinks his ship is ugly, while at the same time calling other ships someone else might like ugly. irony.

i operated a chimera for a very long time, properly outfitted, it can be a very good ship, though easily mousetrapped and stomped on in a fight.
i like my avenger a lot, and its in regular rotation with my Galaxy X.
frankly, i think the avenger is what the chimera should have been. same basic idea, though slightly less maneuverable, but thats made up for by a much stronger hull and better forward firepower.
Id stick with the chimera for the moment. As others have already said you can get it without extra cost, its very flexible it has a very usefull console and it will be freely upgradable for delta rising.
And it works great as a cruiserlike Escort even with beams.
Cause if you stick to cannnons its pretty much an escort like your Defiantwith slightly less punch but more survivability , as is the Avenger, its much like a charal with less tac abilities but more survivability minus quite a bit of turn.
The avenger however beats it in raw firepower because of the weapons layout and it goea well with all weapon types while with the chimera is best with phasers. And it can mount a cloaak for ambush damage but imho that console slot is better used for something that helps you all the time.
But the avenger wil cost you 2500 zen. For delta rising keeping it up to date would additionaly require 500 zen for a fleet module and as rumors say between 500 and 1000 zen to upgrade to FleetT5U.
As for looks its a matter of taste personaly i find both of them ugly with the chimera being slightly less offensive to my eyes. However the fleet version of the avenger is less ugly to me than the standard one with its upswept pylons.
You see both Ships are great but both of them have their strongpoints. In case you want to try soemthing new other than staight forward cannon fire escort style both ships are great for beams as well. However for a beam cruiser the Regent might be better beacause its wide angle torp wich is grat for braodsiding.
But if you just want slightly more survivability and good old cannonfire dps + flexibility + turnrate + a usefull console + more tactical consoles and if you doesnt mind the cost then ditch both abd get a tempest + its fleet version.
However, considering delta rising is comming soon. So do yourself the favor, save your zenn for maybe an upgrade or a t6 of your liking and stick to the chimera for the time being. Your not loosing out on anything and it basicly can be what you wnat it to be.

Pros: it's free, it can used for multiple roles w/it's UNI BOffs, Fleet version only costs 1 FSM and both versions get a free upgrade in expansion.
Cons: It's fugly

If your life timer or able to get the Chimera through the vet 1k requirement...it's a great escort
My PvE/PvP hybrid skill tree
true, and for the moment it is the superior ship.
But if the OP is a lifer, then keep in mind that the T-5U Chimera (free upgrade) gains a 5th tactical console

If you like a good looking ship, go with the Avenger.
If you like battlecruisers, go with the Avenger.
Go with the Avenger.
Go Avenger.
Avenger.
(Of all ships currently at T5, Avenger is my favorite. If they ever made an endgame Excalibur though...)
pssst.....AVENGER!!!
