What'd be the perfect Fed Beam boat Captain and ship?

Hi all

I'll keep it short and sweet! I've been a rommy scientist (lots of fun) and a Fed Tactical Captain (very exciting) Now I want to try something I've not done before and have hlm (or her, you know, s'all equal and stuff) a mighty beam boat.

I'm going to start a Character from scratch, and alls I know is, I want to be a Federation Captain.

If I'm building a beam boat Character from scratch, what's the best career (I have a feeling Engineer, but don't know for sure), and how can I get the most bang for my buck from my Character. Also what are some great space-sets to save up for once that's an option, and are there any top tips and handy hints of which I can be made aware as I start my journey?

Probably your tac captain actually. Most of what makes Engies special can be duplicated by DOFFs and consoles and usable more often (Engies are the weakest space class; they shine much more on the ground). If you want to be a beam boat (as opposed to escort), and assuming you aren't talking lockbox ships, then you want something with 3-5 tac boff stations and 3-4 tac consoles. For the people who get stupidly-serious about that, that means

    Top Tier
    Regent, Excelsior, Avenger
    Second Tier
Galaxy-X, Odyssey Tactical, Ambassador, Assault Cruiser

And of course with the T6 ships coming soon, those will probably qualify as well.

Your main offense is going to be FAW + APB, maybe with APO as well, with as many CrtH consoles and CrtD weapons as you can find. A stack of assorted stuff to help either boost energy or counter drain, and assorted cooldown reduction doffs to let you use it all as much as possible. The fancier your tools, the more expensive they get, to the point that its not hard to drop a few hundred million EC on the project. Defenses are actually pretty minimal, if any at all, to make room for more offense stuff, working on the principle of 'dead things can't hurt you.' The principles are all pretty boringly straightforward, actually. The rest is just fine-tuning.

For a DPS Beam Boat Cruiser a Tac is still the best captain.

For Space I consider Tac the best for PVE and Sci the best for PVP.

I own the Avenger, and while it can make an adequate Beam Boat I feel the ACR or Regent is one of the best choices Fed side. If my fleet had the T5 shipyards I would have purchased the Regent. With the things I've learned about the T5U ships I feel the Regent is still a great and durable boat.

Lt.Com and Ens Tac abilities mean you can stick the Wide Angle Torp that comes with the Regent in the back so when you've got all 7 beams on target so are the torpedoes.

That being said I have no idea how good the Eclipse or the Guardian are going to be which are the new T6 Fed Cruisers.

Damage type is whatever you want of course but with Antiprotons you can get a free Omni Directional array. Also the Kinetic Cutting Beam+Assimilated Console gives you 6 forward firing beam arrays on the ship.

If I ask you a question it is not an insult but a genuine attempt to understand why.

My Tac-Captain is viable? Superb! That'll save me slogging through the lower ranks again, what great news!

Thanks for the advice so far. I like the sound of The Avenger; a nice mix between a cruiser and escort, it seems nimble and sleek. Yeah, I like the sound of that :) But dknight seems to be a fan of the regent, so I dunno, I may give that a shout too!

Are there any rep or mission-earned space sets that really lend themself to a beam-boat? I'd guess go for anything that enhances toughness, but if anyone knows better, any advice on that front is very welcome!

I do like the fact you can try different ways of playing in this game, it makes diving back into it after a break really enjoyable!

Going by just the C-store versions:

    1) The Avenger trades a (very) small amount of hull for extra speed and maneuverability for a greater tactical advantage.

    2) The Regent has 2 Science consoles and 3 Tactical consoles compared to the Avenger's 1 Science console and 4 Tactical consoles.

    3) The Regent has a Lt Universal slot, that in all honesty is best served as a Science Officer, as it does not come with a regular Science Officer spot.

    4) The Avenger also has a Lt Universal slot, that can be used as an Engineer, Science Officer, or another Tactical Officer. It already has a regular spot for all three career paths. When used a Tactical Officer, it would give you 6 Tactical abilities over the Regent's 4. And if you use Romulan Tactical Officers with the Superior Operative trait, can give it more of a tactical advantage.

    5) The Regent's Wide Angle Quantum Torpedo is very nice. If you are a fan of torpedoes and wish to use one on a cruiser, this is a good choice.

    6) The Avenger has a Cloak. It can be useful, but I don't really use it.

    7) The Avenger can use DHCs. I know, you are asking in regards to a beam boat; but if I didn't mention it, someone would jump all over it. If you can get your turn rate high enough and you a good enough pilot, you could really make use of them. Also, it would give you an alternate build option.

Now, if you plan on getting Fleet versions, the difference in consoles becomes moot, as both Fleet versions have 4 Engineering, 2 Science, and 4 Tactical. And as I am sure you are aware, the Fleet Regent does not come with the Wide Angle Quantum Torpedo and the Fleet Avenger does not come with the Cloak. But if you already have a cloak from the Defiant or the Galaxy-X, they can be used on the Fleet Avenger.

    Hope this helps.

Excelsior has a huge advantage because of transwarp. You can get to missions faster, faster grinding more EC... Lets all your Fed Alts doff faster, meaning huge EC/Dilithium advantage.

The Avenger does not come with a Cloaking Console. Although it can use one if you have it.

It's Ship Specific Universal Console is the VATA system which is a pair of Torpedoes that shoot Torpedoes based on what Cruiser Command the Avenger is using.

I like the Wide Angle Quantum and the shape of the Sovereign that bit more, And despite owning the Avenger I still think the KDF Fleet Tor'kaht is the best Battlecruiser in the game.

avenger.. then Odyssey. Seriously. Odyssey, you have a sitting lt tac, a uni lcdr that can BE tac. if you outfit the consoles, you get a very maneuverable hull, a decent pet that likes to throw grav wells. the only down side is you don't get the tac slots the avenger has, but with a off swap the Oddy is far more flexible. on and really, you don't have to care about the ship maneuvering.. it's a beam boat.

If you can get your hand on one a galor makes a pretty good beam boat.
