With the new tier 6 ships coming out, will ships like my dyson science destroyer be obsolete now? If those ships have better hull and more console slots than my ship, has all the work I went through gone to waste?
Event ships are free and upgradeable so not in all cases. Before totally saying the ships are obsolete or not I would wait until we see what actually comes. Cryptic may have other ideas on what is coming that havent been shared.
If however you mean obsolete for PvP then most probably the answer is yes. Very few PvP games allow for a person to be truly competitive without spending anything. Since Zen can be bought off the exchange you do not even need to spend real money to buy competitive stuff so can that also not be considered as free, and not obsolete?
For me, the problem with the T5.5 ships from the C-Store is that I do not see much of an improve over the free T5 ships or mirror ships to justify spending Zen on. Hopefully the features of the T6 ships will be enough of an incentive for me to buy 'em. Otherwise, I will just continue to chug along and use my free T5 ships (and mirror).
Current T5 ships won't be rendered obsolete in any meaningful sense by adding T6 ships to the game.
Why? Because the game's current content isn't being rebalanced in such a way as to necessitate it. A T5 ship with current high-end gear will still breeze through just about everything as easily as they did before. STFs still have cool-down timers, so getting through them 20 seconds faster doesn't offer the player any real benefit. The only part of the game really impacted by this is PvP.
The latest MU ships have much better BoFF layouts than their Fleet counterparts, so while the MU Escort Retrofit will be less durable than the Fleet Escort Retrofit, it's still the only Saber-class skin that's capable of using Gravwell. Ergo, they're not completely worthless. Likewise with the Heavy Cruiser (LtC Sci; Mmmm, gravwell on a free cruiser) and the Science Vessel Retrofit (LtC Eng; dont you just love the smell of warp plasma in a gravwell? Or, eng team 3 on a science ship that isn't the Noobula).

Still waiting to be able to use forum titles

Like the poor mirror universe ships. May they RIP.
EDIT: So tired I typed opposite instead of obsolete. Hue
Thing is, the Delta Dead End ships are the same ships that are already Dead End ships. That's kind of how they ended up on that list...
My Fed Sci toon will continue to fly the mirror science vessel retrofit.
I like the cut of your jib. (did that work? No? K.)
