So I was going along and doing my business but after thinking a little there was something that was odd...
I could go multiple volleys and not land a single beam shot on the Elachi fighters, now all I had was the accuracy trait and basic gear on a Scorpion. I'm not complaining that I was missing so much...what I find curious is they were hitting me so easy. They were hitting me often even with evasive maneuvers.
Now I'm wondering why player shuttles/fighters and fighter pets don't have nearly the defense of npc fighters? How does that work with the 10% evasion trait that they can hit me 85-90% of the time with ease and yet I practically have to pray to get a single hit or watch my fighters go down in flames to even the slightest aoe?

That IS a good question. With a 10% Evasion Chance, how DO you get hit only 90% of the time? :P
My point is NPC fighters have such incredible evasion and yet player/player pet shuttles/fighters don't seem to get any of this at all...not in the littlest bit...

I've always hated that missions...it's not really hard just it's just annoying. I know that shuttle sized craft doing combat in the Star Trek universe do it with 360 beam arrays. But that takes away one of the classic aspects of dogfighting where if you stay behind the enemy you are safe and if you also have your weapons pointed at him then he isnt safe. I sometimes wish that shuttle combat in the game had that style of fighting and to hell with if it is canon or not. Make it so that shuttle speed affects your turn rate and while you they are at it they can also lower all the shuttle turn rates so they cant turn on a dime. Give the camera an option so that i can follow a shuttle in chase plane view so that i wont have to keep switching back and forth between free and chase (since starships and shuttles share the same camera settings).
You know i had never tried any of the shuttle events in the queue? or even when they added the 'best defense' mission into the PVE queue? despite me playing on an off for a few years. But i tried the best defense in the PVE queue about a week ago and i was in a Scorpion and i moved all my XII gear from my starship over to me Scorp. But that didnt matter cause the run still sucked...i havent been back since, and i wont be back until they revamp the shuttle combat system (if they even ever decide to do so).

I know. I was just messing with you, man.
I don't actually have the answer. I would guess that they have a hidden trait that increases their dodge rate.
I try to hit them using area effect weaponry. That tends to do the trick. The drawback in the cooldown on the good ones.
I think NPCs fighters and heavy torpedoes got defense buffs so that Carrier pets weren't too useless in a BFAW spamfest world. But that was never extended to player shuttles.

I am relieved, though not pleased, to see that "The Best Defense" mission is as difficult for some others as it is for me. It was enough to make me swear off shuttle pve missions altogether. I never hit what I shot at, the shuttle turned so darn fast and was so small and difficult to see on the screen (even at maxed out size for me) that the shuttle was hard to control and getting stuck at the top of the window on occasion was always annoying. I finally just gave up, replaced the mission reward filter masks with full ev suits and went from there. This irked me since I hate skipping any missions when leveling up a new captain (possibly this is just a personality quirk on my part).
This having been said, does anyone have a strategy for this mission that is even remotely succesful, aside from dying and repawning a hundred times and winning by depressing attrition or by having what they are doing to me make the Elachi so sick with pity for me so that they puke in their helmets?
You will die repeatedly, it's inevitable, and it's because of the totally ridiculous design of this mission. Primarily due to the fact that Players generate 1000000% more aggro than NPC's, you get spammed by the enemy shuttles ...
However, they DO miss, just as often as you do, if you watch the numbers above your ship carefully, you will see 'miss' pop up, just as often as actual hits. What makes it seem like they don't, is that they concentrate fire on you, due to the above mentioned threat level you generate.
The best tactic I've found is to use the same tactic as the enemy does!
The "helper" shuttles are infinite, so they respawn constantly (after a short break) so I use only the "Attack Target" command and spam that constantly, then simply do as the enemy does and "concentrate fire" ...
First is to take out the walkers, if you concentrate all fire on them, they die very quickly, This is very important, because the game will respawn enemy shuttles while the Walker is active, once destroyed, only then do you switch to the shuttles, and once again use the same "Attack Target" command.
Keep moving, and use evasive maneuvers whenever it's of CD, make sure to have lot's of shield batteries equipped, and slot a Sci BoFF with Hazard Emitters for the continuous Hull Heal ...
Keep an eye on how many Plasma Beams are being fired at each enemy. If yours is the only one, then it's means that that all the friendly shuttles are dead/respawning, so get the hell out of dodge (bt running back into the "city center", until there a several squadrons following you, then dive back in ...
You will still die (because the mission is badly designed) but it's less often, and less annoying)
** There is a tactic, that I don NOT condone or use, but if you are a Romulan or KDF player, you get access to a Cloak ... You can sit back and let the friendly shuttles do all the work simply by targeting enemies one at a time, and using the 'Attack Target" command.
NOTE! That hitting the button will decloak you, so make sure only to use it when you are either out of range of the enemies, or when there are none currently spawned.

The deal is, you're supposed to have a leg up on them with custom load outs and Captain Powers and whatnot.
