I finally got my hands on a Marion and I'm Underwhelmed. Am I doing something wrong?
Im a Fed Eng in a Avenger. Pretty standard A2B Antiproton beam boat setup with Obelisk Core. DEM as my commander eng skill. 3 purple tech doffs Marion and one that buffs tac team.
Was getting around 13K DPS before Marion now getting about 14K DPS. I was expecting more of an improvement than that.
I useually Alternate nadion inversion and EPS but just have DEM going whenever itf off cooldown. I will try using it a bit more tactically and hopefully squeese out some more DPS.
The trick was to use BO in those 8 seconds to get massive spike damage with NO loss in power. That's no longer relevant, since BO doesn't drain anymore.
I think Marion is just about obsolete because of BO changes.
The number of people that used Marion for beam overload is negligible compared to the use of Marion in mainstream high DPS builds. This is the reason why BO changes has not affected exchange pricing - because it is still a must-have doff for high DPS builds.
Having said that, having Marion is not going to help much if you don't know when and how to maximise its potential. There's a reason why Marion is used by 99% of 50K capable builds/players.
Also X->W cores are inefficent at achieving overall DPS increase on most builds. You're likely to be better off using Marion and a W->A core to buff auxillary and Nukara T4 etc.
Beams have overcap...usually on a cruiser which could have the weapons efficiency aura
Cannons are found on escorts which don't have the aura nor are cannons able to overcap.
Sorry to say bro, you blew a ton of ec for near nothing gained.
Drm+matiobmn is essentially another alpha strike on pvp....that's it
Hmmm...I wonder why my scimi beam boat has a Marion slotted then...ummm... Maybe because you're wrong!
Overcapping only goes so far, and weapons efficiency is a broken toy compared to Marion. Not to mention weapons efficiency isn't even avaliable to dreadnought class ships that typically have the highest DPS potential.

Yep...those 8 seconds of no drain on an overcapped beam array schimitar is the sole reason for 50k dps builds...
Just for shots and giggles, try running without marion and see the difference...it ain't going to be much man
That's a very bold statement, especially at the current (and outrageous) cost for the DOff.
Well, it is pretty much the same as the JHAS: Ancient fame. The JHAS is still a good escort, but with all the new addition since fleet defiant, there are many escorts which are near it, some (recent addition) surpassing it even in pvp. In PvE, there are a lot escorts which are equal or better in performance to it.

Marion is indeed obsolete, for the most part. Marion was introduced long before these current slew of cores, some now which have the same effect Marion has (resist power drop in power banks when power is used). Back when he was introduced, BO was also quite different. Then there's also the X->Y feature of cores, and other set items which add more and more power to an individual power bank.
Marion was top of the hill a long time back. A long time back. Lately? It's a drop in the bucket of ever-creeping power in this game.
ESPECIALLY with plasmonic now being given freely to the Feds.
At most, Marion will account for a few percentage points of your DPS -- in the best case use of the doff. You get that much variation from STF run to STF run. The difference he makes up has to be statistically insignificant at this point in time.

Marion is not going to matter much if u use it randomly to maintain power levels here and there. The true value of a marion is its unparraleted ability to guarantee full weaps power in its 8 sec window when used properly. Other ways to keep power levels high are either not 100% reliable or come at a cost that is much greater than a doff slot - so Marion is in no way obsolete. The other methods of maintaininng weaps power are sub-optimal when looking at overall DPS capabilities/opportunity costs (and most of them also don't work as well as Marion either)
Well I'm Taking more care when I use the Marrion and there seems to be a small benefit to haveing it.
For me personaly was it worth what I payed for it? No not even close. If I were a tac or a sci maybe I could have made better use of it but for My eng in an Avenger I wish I had sold it on.
If I was given it for free or if you could pick them up for maybe 1mil ec then yeah I'd prob go for another. but At current prices there are far better things to spend my money on.
I could have saved up a little more and got the Insparational leader trait for example.

Well inspirational leader is going to have a much smaller impact on DPS - so you're probably much better off having gotten the marion

As I said, he is another layer to cannon based vapes/alphas. And it's a pretty significant layer

Actaully that 8 sec window is CRITICAL for 50K plus runs...
