I'm tired of failing easy instances because I have to stop and explain things to n00bs who thought they'd start in elites.
I think 3 - 5 runs on normal would be enough. Each one unlocked separately?
I'm trying not to be sadistic about it. In truth, I don't know why n00bs (as in those who have NEVER done a queued instance, let alone an STF) can choose between normal and elite. Elite shouldn't come first.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.
But unfortunately that wouldnt do anything. I am always astonished how unobservent most players are, even if they run 100 normal stfs, most of them wouldnt have a clue about them.
Even the most common approach, to just say: you need all optional x times wouldnt bring anything, as the queues -especially normal ones- are so easy you can complete it alone with 4 teammates with less dps then your pets.
And thats pretty much the problem: you cant heal stupid nor ignorance. Doesnt matter how many times you let them run something or have them do a tutorial.
Sad, but true story.
Better solution: Don't play queues. I notice you're pretty active on the forums...form some friendships, do premades, never see these "n00bs", as you so eloquently put it, again.
Teamwork trumps all -- you're fighting a losing battle trying to coordinate a group of randoms. Barring players from the elite queues won't solve anything.
Other solutions include do premades and only run with fleeties. I'm aware of this. The issue is that I have to work and I'm not always online at the same time as my game buddies. Sometimes I just want to do a few quick runs and log.
And I do have friends. I mean real ones not in game and whatnot. I don't see or hear from them every single day, nor do I want to. I'm not what you call a "social butterfly." OH, and I do get laid, but that part is none of your business :P

You CAN team with people you know in game and enter PUGs as a group. 2-4 experienced players can handle most missions.
One of my friends just plays, and I'm not kidding here... JUST to pewpewpew with starships. He doesn't care about optionals or teamwork. He just pugs to shoot things. There are most likely others like him. And no, he's not a child, he's 30.
If you think you can teach every pugger to complete optionals, you're probably better off teaching Tovan Khev to just pick one Romulan captain and stick with them.
I've actually had the accolades for the optionals for a long while now. I'm just tired of queuing for a quick run and losing because one or more people have no idea what they're doing. Seriously -- it's not hard to do Elites, with or without the optionals. My time is limited due to work, and it would be nice to win a couple when I log on.

You can't solve this problem. Even people in PESTF don't know what they're doing quite frequently. Past few days I started parsing again and the people still had 2-3K DPS or randomly dropped / came in late.
The solution is not to play the STFs anymore, and find another solution for whatever you're grinding.

Well, its common knowledge that pugging and PESTF often results in a similar group-level. After all, its a public channel.
I'm in the same boat. Honestly, your friend is smart. It's stupid to take STO too seriously.
Well I wouldn't exactly call it 'stupid'. Just unproductive. Games are supposed to be fun over all else, and some do have genuine fun to have additional goals such as completing optionals. It's just when they stress over it and antagonize others who don't do the same that's crossing the line.
There are many groups one can roll with if they wish to go for optionals. To expect everyone to comply in random pugs though definitely isn't getting them anywhere.
hello I am a returning player as in I played years ago. I have been enjoying my time in STO upon returning. I have been as a level 50 player attempting to learn the new groups etc. There are many where no one queus for the regular ones so i have had to attempt to pick up the info in an elite.
Some of us are "old" i am 50 and I consider myself an intelligent player but I did have someone get upset last night and I was trying to learn.
I play for fun and I only do pugs because I enjoy the instant stuff I hate waiting for people to form groups. I have only a certain amount of time and do the best I can. Anyhow some people do no damage and in my case I am learning or rather relearning and think considering I am doing pretty well. There are hopeless groups though in which case I just sit back and shoot along with them. I am adding one new instance or two every few days but please realize that some people that are "noobs" are trying to learn in the only way they can by participating and possibly getting blown up and then processing the information they took in and trying again the next day or if you arent too traumatized maybe again in a few hours.
I tried one of the undine ones last night with lanes and stuff you close off it was my first one I think I did pretty well considering. When I saw the presentation at the beginning the first thing in my mind is "oh man this one takes some thought I wonder if i will be called names"

The reputation marks are gotten in normal stf's.

you can't get the mats for crafting in normals.
you can thank cryptics new crafting system for the increase in inexperienced players hitting elite pugs.
