Not sure if this is the place for it, but here goes.

Not long ago I got a G19 keyboard and a 7 button mouse. This is my first gaming keyboard and mouse and I just don't have any idea of how to go about using them. I don't mean how to program it, I can look up the manual, I am wondering if anyone else uses a gaming keyboard and how they choose to use their extra keys and buttons for STO. Would love to hear any advice and ideas others have.

Well, I got a big 20 button keypad with a directional stick and thumb triggers. I use it for ship movement and captain/console abilities, and a mouse with 12 side buttons I use for my boff abilities. Before that, I had just a basic keyboard and a wireless keypad for abilities.

I kept most of the commands the same. Space bar for phasers, keyboard buttons 2 and 3 for fore and aft torpedos, wasdeq for ship movement, and the keypad for most other abilities. What you have to do is just sit back for a minute and think about what is easier for you. Do you find yourself hu ting for abilities? Do your fingers automatically move to a certain place for certain things? Also, your tray layout can affect how you percieve everything and how you react.

Try keeping your boff abilities easily accessible make sure the powers you use most are always in reach, and go hunting as little as possible. Attack modifier and damage resists/heals should be your main focus, and everything else should be a short hop away. Considering the mouse, you may try programming a macro, allowing you to use 1 button for multiple abilities.

For me I mostly just click for BOFF abilities and my own. That being said Macros are what I had in mind, to the 12 G keys. Like what's ok to use (I know some games aren't to accepting of complicate macros sometimes). I wouldn't even know what to begin using as a macro, and have no idea how others really play or the min/max end game crowd runs, but if I could get some ideas or suggestions on useful or popular macros to bind to those keys, I'd love to be able to make the most out of my keyboard/mouse.
