We already have beautiful Exploration - we just need more reasons to go there

It doesn't always take a super complex story, voice acting and a big time and money budget to create exciting exploration content:

We have many "Patrol" systems in the sectors of Star Trek Online that are often only visited ONCE.

Some of the are extremely beautiful, with gas rings, asteroid fields, colorful planets and moons. (This is the Lahra system in Zeta Andromedae.)

The recent "chance to get a catalyst while scanning nodes" weekend was enough reason for me to visit these systems again. Each has 2-4 resources you can scan.

The opposition is weak, 2-3 weak ships in 3-4 groups each. You are just asked to kill them all. For the purpose of scanning only and being able to re-enter the map later you might want to skip that.

Now I wonder why we don't have daily quests or random jobs assigned by Admiral Quinn or other officers that send us on the simple missions we knew from the gone exploration clusters.

STO already has beautiful maps, it's time to show them off more often and give people a reason to go there and behold the beauty. :o
Instead of going there only once and after that queueing up for the most popular STFs or trying to figure out a "good" foundry mission.

Patrols take place in already explored known space.

Exploration was supposed to take place in unexplored areas of space.

Unfortunately (I think) you can only do them once so I tend not to do them.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."

    often only visited once

That's because you can only complete them once.

Yup, this are the basics of "exploration" in Star Trek.

There are really beautiful maps and systems all over the galaxy, but most of em are just useless planets and really lonely systems. Systems like the Pico system, really beautiful (everytime i want to take a screenshot i use to go to there xD) and then, you dont even have a little mission there to do or to take advantaje of the great ambient you will find there. And this is , in my opinion what is making STO more stupid day after day. We have tons of beautiful planets ready to hold a lot of missions there, but the only thing they do is decorative purposes. Its really frustrating.

Anyways, for the post of the op, i think he is saying that patrol missions can be done just once.. thats is not true. At least back in the days (i dont do patrol missions since at least 6 months ago).

Exploration is dead. They *might* do something else later, but don't count on it.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.

Lol, i dont think so. I dont think we will ever see exploration again. Mostly because probably the next expansion will be the last, and we not going to see exploration there, so... we better start imagining exploration in our heads..

    That's exactly the point:

Beautiful systems - only to be visited once.

They are already there, but once you have been there and completed the mission they are just on the sector map and dead. This is such a waste.

There must be a way to put them to good use.

What's really sad is that the patrol missions are exactly the kind that you used to get in Exploration Clusters. Now those are gone, and these have never been replayable.

God I hope Expansion 2 is good.

unless cryptic can figure out a way to monetize it, we will no see it return. Same with PVP and the Foundry. Unless there is a direct monetize system attached to it, Cryptic will not spend any time on it.

why not allow for the use of the planets for foundry start locations, or allow for the random map generator from the old exploring missions...they could just be patrols, so as to not interfere with Gekos vision of none-exploration...exploration? =O.o=
once u clear the planets initial mission, u can then just patrol it daily for a reward chain or something.

STO has the potential to be better then any mmo, infact it has potential to blow the others out of the water if they wouldnt resort to the same generic and shameless theme every other mmo uses....bikinis, money grabs, flashing lights and timed events...

They'll probably get rid of the patrols once they get in and tweak the red alerts.

I agree. I actually still believe in STO's potential.

But like you said, they rather go for fanservice and cash grabs than actual substance that keeps people playing. In fact, if they do exploration right, it actually keep players busy for months.

According to someone that summarized the Las Vegas Livestream.

The devs do want to eventually bring back a true exploration-type feature to the game. They need to find a smarter way to bring infinite exploration that is interesting and entertaining. Not happening in Delta Rising, though.

So we might get exploration, but not this year.

Not to be a negative nancy, but, it took them over a year to implement being able to sit in a chair.

Not only "no," but they in fact specifically said the exact opposite: That they "want to" (that should sound familiar to the PvP fans) add exploration "later," but it ain't gonna happen in X2.

Patrol Missions are a great oppertunity for little filler content, I rather like the idea of having them be like DOFF assignenments, in as much as theres a pool of available missions that have varying chances or showing up.
With common assignments being more mundane, and as the rarity increases the missions drama goes up.

Optional harder objectives would increase the rewards gained so there is some trace of a challenge

My belief is that a random pool of Patrols, from helping a Space Station out, to Hunting Pirates , with some more desirable rewards of course! would make patrols more interesting and variable.

I believe that most if not all the patrol start locations are avalible foundry Doors.
(I know that the Zeta Andromdea block ones are, I'm using them)

But they are rarely used because most mission authors prefer to use Social hubs since they are much easier to get to. Especially Farms.
This may maximise the efficinecy of play time for many players, but I find it lazy to use the Hub consoles unless theres a story reason, though this is my opinion, and its a rather harsh one i'll admit.
