Rubberbanding

This problem started suddenly over the last few days, roughly the same time as the last patch but I'm not sure it's because of that.

I am in the UK and I use Plusnet, they have been superb so far.

I'm no expert but it looks like te4-2.ccr01.bos06.atlas.cogentco.com [66.28.4.254] is the problem.

Other than fly to the US, break into a server farm and press a reset button, is there anything that can be done about this?

The Boston Cogent Hub is your biggest problem, however, 'Path Ping' results are also showing 'dropped packets' on the Level3.net backbone, as well as your ISP, Plus.net that needs to be corrected.

You should contact your ISP and ask them why you're seeing 'dropped packets' so close to your entry point into the Internet... as well as have them talk to Level3.net about the bandwidth that their paying for...

And you should also open a ticket with Cryptic/PWE to see if they can kick Cogent a few more times to get that Cogent Boston Hub looked at...

All of your readings are below the 180ms recommended upper limit for network latency, so your problems are not a network latency issue...

So now we need the 'Net Test' results, as well as the 'Path Ping' diagnostics... (use the Windows command 'pathping' which has the same syntax as the 'tracert' command...)

I too have been getting horrible lag and TONS of rubber-banding. In another thread Cyrptic said they were investigating.
I use to do 100K DPS, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

Just because they are investigating does not mean they don't want network information.

Just saying "I'm lagging" with 0 helpful information doesn't mean squat :P

By that line alone it could be generalized, it could be localized, it could be a pipe burst in canada or in africa etc

It's why we always ALWAYS stress people post the information necessary so that others can look and see where it's failing.

Because what's affecting others might not be affecting you.

So in addition to having 'dropped packets' on the Cogent backbone, your local ISP is also throwing away packets due to network congestion...

You should open a ticket with Cryptic/PWE so they can kick Cogent a few more times to try to get the Cogent problem fixed...

And in addition, you need to contact your ISP Tech Support and see if they can do something about the local congestion issues...

Hiya, original poster here, I just want everyone to know what being given the "run around" looks like in email form.
    Hello,

Thank you for contacting us about this issue. In all the trace route you've performed it appears that the last few hops does spike up a bit. Unfortunately, we are limited with our support in this case as it is completely up to the ISP to route the connection.

There has been not reported maintenance to the game. So long as you meet the minimum requirements to run the game and use a wired connection. Then, you should have not problems running the game.

We recommend posting this in the official forums, as this would be a good topic to discuss with the Moderators and fellow Captains. Our development team and community team checks the forums often as well.

You can visit the official Star Trek Online Forums here: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com

Thank you very much for your deep patience and continued patronage.

So moderators and fellow captains, what are you going to do to fix my gaming issues?

(Tongue in cheek, not holding my breath etc).

The problem is not with my ISP. The problem started when the last update/maintanance occured. I played for too long with this ISP to think it's their problem. My ISP has nothing to do with it. Something happened across the hops when the mainatanance occured. I cannot explain otherwise since all this crazy stuff began to happen since last Thursday.

Now STO patches have nothing to do with your ISP or the Internet backbone nodes. The 'Path Ping' diagnostics that you posted clearly show that your connections are having data packets thrown away by the Cogent backbone, and by your local ISP Gateway to the Cogent backbone. So claiming that your ISP has nothing to do with this is completely contrary to the diagnostic results you generated and posted...

(So are we talking about complete denial here ???)

I too have been getting horrible lag and TONS of rubber-banding. In another thread Cyrptic said they were investigating.

Same. The game is sort-of playable but there's been frequent rubber banding ever since last thursday. Here's what I got from the tracert, nettest, and pathping procedures. Troubleshooting steps on my end have been to reset devices, renew IP addresses, open ports, test for dropping packets via other means (consistently less than 1% via pingtest.net and a microsoft app) upgrade router firmware, and check other games/applications for similar issues (nothing). The ISP is Mediacom (US).

From what it looks like based on my results (US) its that the connection through to cogentco (or possibly AT&T but that's an entirely separate corporation from Mediacom) is bunk, not the local ISP. Ease up on the pouncing, this seems to be a networking issue closer to cryptic's end than ours.

    Trace complete.

You forgot this one, which appears to be just after the ISP Proxy/Firewall Private Network Address and the Public Internet, which appears to be a network congestion problem. So you may have a local ISP issue as well...

Its also suspicious that the 'Path Ping' stops at the Gateway between ATT and Cogent, with ATT having a known business dispute with Cogent currently...

Interesting. I'll check on the 1% drop at 3 during off peak hours and contact my ISP accordingly if there seems to be a consistent issue. However with that drop off in both the path ping and tracert between ATT and Cogent THAT situation probably needs to be resolved before I can get a decent connection to STO....

[Update] Contacted the ISP and they say I have a faulty modem. We'll see how things go when I get that replaced....late next week.

Then how can you explain the fact that before the last week's maintanance, everything ran perfectly since I played STO (2012) ? Suddenly my ISP said "Oh hey let's block the connectivity towards cryptic". Even from the various diagnostics you guys receive, the common issues many people are experiencing indicate that a problem could occur on your end as well. Let's hope this maintenance today will fix the issue.

For me it didn't. Same symptoms, same path ping and tracert results. I'm personally looking at other networking issues but it would probably be informative to know what the rest of you are seeing now.
