Don't ultra-rares already exist? They just don't have a different color separating them from other very rare DOFFs.
No they currently do not exist, you're probably thinking of 'ultra rare' doffs like the Xindi Insectoid conn officer or the Klingon Augment doff Kang, they're very rare quality they're just called 'ultra rare' because they're hard to come by.
I only hope this means we can upgrade our current doffs and not have to open up more c-store packs to get new shinies
Why does this news mean purples are worthless? They're not changing in potency or functionality, are they? I don't see a problem.
Well no they won't change and they won't be entirely worthless, but everyone is gonna want to fill their crews with these new Ultra Rares and these new doffs will sell for quite a lot of ec and will probably be very hard to come by in c-store packs (think lockbox ship drop rates)...
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.
All your purples are now worthless! Prepare for lockbox ship style drop rates
Not that I doubt they're going to appear at some time, but it could also be just a copy/paste of their normal search filter template, where UR just hasn't been "greyed out" yet.
Ultra-rares are already in game. Giving them their own category would seems an actual improvement to me. If it's just a filter for the existing category this is good.
If of course our whole rosters become obsolete and we can trade in 5 purples + 35k Dil for a random chance (aka yellow advisor 9 out of 10 attempts) at the fleet starbase, this is just a horrible idea.
There are currently no design plans to introduce UR Doffs. The system just doesn't require them, and in some ways cannot currently support them (no variables set up for reward scaling, for example).
Doesn't mean it might not one day happen. Just letting you guys know you don't need to worry about it just now.

LOL just like there were no plans to go F2P a month before the game went F2P.... New Doff pack here we come!!!

Speak for yourself. :P
Unless they nerf the purples, I'm pretty happy with my Very Rare results. Actually, only my Main character has a full compliment of purple DOffs in regular use. For my Alts, I only strive to make them Blue DOffed, as that's plenty to ixnay most failure percentages (or at least get failure/disaster combined to at/below about 10%, which is acceptable to me).
Trelane87, you're looking at this all wrong. Don't fear the price of the URs, think of how much cheaper VR (and not to mention my Rs) will be!
Heck, Bort's post above, not withstanding, I say let the UR DOffs come!
You can find/contact me in game as @PatricianVetinari. Playing STO since Feb 2010.

Thank you for blessing us with answer, much appreciated.
Now much more pressing question, can we really expect (or hope to expect, whatevar) the new "improved beyond repair" doff ui to reach the usability and general usefulness of old doff ui within say next 6 months or so?
Cause then you know we can take a break from the game and all, leave you guys in peace from our nerd rage on forums etc. And this too:

Well from my stand point when I'm looking for doffs I go for these different attributes:
1) Traits/usefulness
and
2) Species/uniqueness
I like doffs with traits that will be useful to the assignments I like to do, but I also like to have the rarest doffs I can possibly find. I currently have on my main FED toon 496 doffs (452 of them VR) and of that 22 Vorta, 35 Tosks, 15 Jem'Hadar, 8 Sets of Bynars, 23 Klingons, and 3 Aenars (no duplicates, most VR)... my main Romulan toon has 200 doffs mostly Romulan/Reman. To me adding another rarity is just pointless and removes their uniqueness, would there be UR quality Vorta or Bynars or Aenars or dare I say Romulans? (don't get me started on Romulan doffing :P) Or would there only be UR of whatever species of the month the devs are favoring like with these new school specialist doffs.. currently the only VR versions of them are Xindi... If they made it so you could 'train' or upgrade existing doffs to higher rarities I'd be all for that, but more than likely they'd just introduce them in a C-Store pack and expect people to pay an arm and a leg for them. I'm not even sure why they use 'rarity' as a means for classifying doffs, I had a 'common' Aenar doff once... I didn't know they were common
Seeing how decisions have been made with regards to the doff system as of late I do not have much confidence in URs being rolled out in any proper form, they will either be required for certain things or will be so sought after due to whatever crazy ability they will given that it'll just turn the current doff market on it's head, but as far as pricing I'm not afraid, I got my most of my Very Rare doffs for practically no ec and I'll get these UR doffs the same way

And if you want to see the big problem:
There's your problem, I personally don't believe in powercreep but I might after this
Better than that:
Reduces all BOFF CDs by X% when you use any BOFF ability.
