What does Enable Astrometrics actually do?

I've been playing this game for many years now but have always been curious as to what the Enable Astrometrics option actually does, apart from displaying a grid layout in Sector Space. What actual uses does it have?

    That's all it does. Back when the game first launched, the grid was permanently on. Many of us hated it, so they eventually gave us the option to turn it off. It's just a leftover from back then.
