Skill Tree...

Could we please get a skill tree similar to the old version...

When I first started playing it was awesome to actually be able to customize your skills :)

This new incarnation makes me feel stupid.. it seems very pointless... give me customization of skills back...

That is all... carry on with your day now!

What was the big difference...i honestly can't remember.

Pretty sure the new(ish) skill tree is more streamlined though
    Chive on and prosper, eh?

since the newer system is consolidated most of the various subtrees into 1 grouping, I doubt there will be much push to unsimplify the system. One of the big reasons is that this newer setup doesnt mean people are respeccing all the time, I cannot actually recall the last time someone complained about the cost in respec tokens when new ships came out.

Course maybe those people just left....

You were actually able to focus on separate weapons and systems... say you always fly a cruiser with phaser beams and torps... you could choose to focus on phaser weapons and let's say quantum torps... same as the subsystems you actually use.

The new one is so generic that everyone pretty much uses cookie cutter builds....

You could make phasers stronger by investing in that skill.... (as an example) I feel now everyone is pressed into using a certain weapon based solely on the weapons stats..

there were tons of different builds you could use because you could make yours somewhat unique

Forcing people to spec into specific ship types and specific weapons types was the dumbest thing ever and I'm frankly pretty disturbed by the thought that anyone is nostalgic for that.

yes, i mean it was expensive to run higher "grade" energy weapons, meaning everyone pretty much only used disruptor/phaser and photons/quantums, I rarely ever saw polaron or ap weaponry, Tetryons were pretty crappy even in the old system so i never saw them. didnt see many Tricobalt or transphasic weaponry either.

i do have one one thing to say: the old system did make rainbow builds much much crappier.

oh yes, and if you were klingon and wanted a to fly a carrier.... 90% of your ship statpoints were in non carrier ships, since y'know it was a T5 skill and there werent any lower tier carriers at that time.

I'm not saying exactly the same.. but the way it is now doesn't provide much custom skill building.

If people like having the simplistic skill tree I have no problem with it.

I'm just not a fan of it... since F2P there's too much hand holding..

On a side not I also believe Respecs should be free... I'm sure they make enough money from all the other things they don't need to charge for them.

old system would have been actually really good, if they'd allowed XP being gained and distributed past reaching max level.

since you could only allways use 1 ship, 1 weapon type, and maybe 2-3 science skills at one time, having skill points in the other skills wouldn't have affected anything.

Even now, filling all skills wouldn't unbalance the game necessarely. What good is 9 points in projectile weapons if you don't have a projectile weapon. What good is particle generators if you have no BOFF ability that profits from it and so on...
    Go pro or go home

I can customize just fine. people who put 9 points in all their skills are just dumb, and can customize greater as the best skill bonus per point spent, maxes out at 6 points.

at least now people can freely switch ships or energy types without having to respec their skill trees.

P.S. No game i know of MMO wise lets you respec your skills for free.
