How about SCUBA diving for next year's Summer Event?

bberge1701bberge1701 Member Posts: 726 Bug Hunter
I know it's early, but I've got a suggestion for next year's event: SCUBA diving. We've got wetsuits. We've got rebreathers. Just give me an underwater version of a floater (or let me use the existing ones underwater), and I'm good to go. :)

Here's what I'm thinking: an underwater habitat somewhere else on Risa (i.e. a separate map). A mission similar to "Horga'hn Hunt", where you're swimming around collecting items. A new amphibious pet to raise (perhaps a relative of the nanov?), or maybe fish pets to display in the tank in my ready room.

The gameplay mechanics would be basically the same as the spacewalk stuff we have now -- I'm thinking specifically of the sequence in "A Step Between Stars".

A physical way to collect pearls. :P

Or underwater photography like the bird vistas.

This is a rather neat idea, particularly since it ties in with the swimsuits. Alternatively, perhaps there could be a deep-sea diving style area, with diver's suits (underwater EV suits), giving us a chance to explore a coral reef or underwater volcanic vents. There's plenty of room for creativity.
Forget the possibility of PvP, for so much has become pay-to-win, never to be balanced. Forget the promise of exploration and research, for in the grim dark future of Star Trek Online there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting publishers.

Snorkling/Scuba diving and give us a spear gun to hunt with. Also fishing would be good too.

how about an event that wouldn't totally sucked at giving favours ?

since they replaced a hourgat hunt that gave 50 favours for a board race that gives 5-30 favours and a lame sand castle that gives 5 favours, and added a bunch of cool swimsuits and Dofs that cost a lot of favours, it's hard to keep up with the required favours to get the new stuff

i actually have scuba/pearl diving suggestion already in my event thread for next year (see my sig below)

idk if the devs would do it but it would be nice to have another way of gathering pearls, if only to break up the monotony of the floater courses ^^

Scuba? If you haven't noticed, the water on Risa isn't even waist deep on a human. :D

Next I'm expecting some Space Harrier-esk combat game w/ the Risian floaters.
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.

Hey, what about the useless Dabo Table using favors instead of Latinum for betting?

i was thinking the same, in general id like to have a waterplanet .. with underwater cities and stuff :D

    maybe with some aquatic species.

Swimming, SCUBA diving and general underwater stuff sounds good.

Adding water deep enough to swim and dive in to Risa would be a great addition for next year.

As long as they don't try and hide a perfectly good space ship underwater, that would make no sense at all.

Yeah, what kind of idiots in Hollywood would do something crazy like that in the Star Trek franchise?

I do like this idea. Was thinking that if the can code in an underwater zone, then maybe they could include a mission to hunt for treasure or even rescue a sunken shuttle crew. Hell even a swimming race could be fun, underwater obstacles through coral and old shipwrecks.

Like has been said above, they didn't replace this hunt. I can successfully run the hunt on 4 characters (before they fixed the 14 min bug). This gives me anywhere from 45 - 75 favors per toon. That's anywhere from 180 - 300 for 15 mins of flying around.

Could be fun but I'd almost rather save that for a year round mission.

I was thinking I'd like to take a cruise on the luxury cruiser, which would justify doing the ship interior, and maybe have orbital skydiving ala the deleted scene from Generations.

Swimming/snorkeling/SCUBA diving definitely gets my vote! I've been saying I would like those to be part of Risa since last year's summer event. Throwing in a nice (functional) swimming pool somewhere around the resort to go with it would be a great touch too.
      Live long, and prosper.

I still wonder how people can enjoy the hoverboard races.. seriously xD. Its obvious that they never rode one of those things in the real life.. or something similar.

The physics and the graphical representation are terrible. Water waves?? dont make me laugh. And you want a SCUBA..?? lol.. you know what.. nevermind. I dont even think this game is going to last 1 more year..

i'd say double that number and it just might become true :P

scuba would make sense considering the wetsuits. I don't really see why there are wetsuits without scuba diving, I mean, other than for something for NPC's to wear while they're standing around, talking, and looking like they must be really hot compared to their friends who are in swimsuits or shorts.

If Cryptic/PWE is following this thread...

Let's go one step further: Aquashuttles.

Think about Star Trek The Animated Series (TAS) episode "The Ambergris Element". There's a FED shuttlecraft designed specifically for underwater missions. (And frankly, with the Undine/fluidic space stuff, I wouldn't limit shuttles to space-only, but...)

      * Develop a special Risan mission involving an aquashuttle/SCUBA excursion.
      * Utilize that dev work to create an aquashuttle/SCUBA mission to an oceanic world. Maybe a standalone Featured Episode (FE) mission, or a special five-person mission.

After all, space is NOT the "final" frontier... ;)

And I'd love to see that TAS aquashuttle (or something similar) in the game.

Not really. Things changed a lot in the past year+.. and it was the time things like this started to pop up. In the beginning, nobody said that. Because a game in beta state cant make you think it will last only for 1 more year..

The problem is, this game is in beta state since 4 years ago (almost 5 now).. the day it was launched lol. I can agree with that. But the last year was just, unbelievable. At this rate, making the maths, the next year by this time things will be terrible if the game is still up. I hope im wrong. And if i am, this will mean things improved a lot, and thinking in this way about STO.. i dunno lol (sadly).

It's true, the coastal areas immediately around the Summer Resort island are shallow. I wouldn't assume the entire planet is like that. That's why I'm suggesting this be somewhere else, in a deeper part of the ocean.

For that matter, I would imagine the water out where the luxury cruiser is floating must be deeper than what's at the shoreline.

Lemuria was all sorts of pain and agony in Champions development. I would not want to repeat that here.

However, a relatively shallow (20-50' deep) area of coral/rocks to swim/scuba in would be doable.

The issue is how we would do that AND have powerboards. Powerboards require the water to be a specific depth in order to function. We'd either need to disable powerboards in the deeper areas, or make some tech for them to coexist.

They can't coexist as-is? So the powerboards read the ground height and not the water surface height to determine where to float?

This confuses me as well. Whether the water is 5 feet deep or 1 foot deep, the board stays the same distance off the water, right up until the player rides up onto the beach and the board disengages. Or are you saying that the needed swim volume might conflict with the powerboard volume?

Maybe make a scuba area, a small crescent island just off the main island, not unlike Molokini just off of Maui. It could be a "wild life sanctuary" and therefore prohibit Powerboard use within the area, with a "field" that disables the board (I'm guessing with no change the board will dismount where the water is too deep just like they do where it is doesn't exist now).

It might be cool if it was on the side of the island a bit past the new Promenade area.

How about making the SCUBA areas blue holes / submarine sinkholes? Like the Great Blue Hole near Belize?
