My main uses the Advanced Heavy Cruiser Refit (Excelsior) but I have alts that use a Recon Science Vessel and a Fleet Escort. So it's whatever you want.
The talents and skills of an engineer works well in any ship type. Escorts benefit from the increased survivability from Miracle Worker and Rotate Shield Frequency. Science Vessels from the extra power offered by EPS Power Transfer. Both enjoy lower weapon power drain from Nadion Inversion.
Engineers in escorts are a very viable build. My main flies the fleet escort, the defiant refit, and recently picked up the multi vector escort when the ships were on sale.
Wats the best ship can any work? i like the nebula class but thats a science, would it be better to have the transwarp cruiser! i am lost!
There is no "best" ship in general.
But there is a ship "best" suited to your playing style. The problem is that only you can really decide if the ship your are using helps or hinders your playing style.
If your Engineering captain works better with a Science ship or Tactical Escort, don't doubt to do the switch and re-spec the corresponding skills.
Well, i love cruisers, but i love canons too, so i bought the Federation Dreadnought Cruiser, she have the firepower from scorts, and survivability from the cruisers. It's perfect to me.

Yes this is exactly right. How I figure out what ship I want to use, I think of what skills I want....usually I want sci or tac skills, because I dont see the eng skills to be Really helpful to me...sure they keep me alive, but Im killing them compared to the sci or eng skills...so I pick sci or a tac skill and then put in support skills to keep me alive and enough to kill them

If you enjoy this sort of ship, I'd offer up the idea of rolling a KDF character, I have buckets of fun in my Negh'var, and it's a lot easier to keep your enemy in front of you. But part of what helps with that is having two Aux to inertial Dampers on tap, you can run it constantly aside from a five second window. It wouldn't go as far on a Galaxy X, but it'd still be pretty cool I imagine.
As for me, I fly the Excelsior R on my Fed engineer, I like the added punch of three consoles and a Lt Cmdr tac slot, although I break out the Galaxy R quite often as it comes under the same skill in the spec tree, it's tanking ability is impressive, although I have been strongly critical of how Galaxy class ships handle in the past, it's fun to fly seperated, but that has a four minute cool down and it goes from being a "good" cruiser to an "ok" escort. That said, I may persevere as some people seem to make it work quite well. I will probably use it more for PVE than PVP though, as I've gotten "into the groove" of my Excelsior at this point, it's just how I like it. Although the Excelsior is one of my favourite ships anyhow, so that usually swings it for me.:D

I'm tempted to make a KDF character, to use a Carrier and perhaps a Negh'var for PVE. The design is beautiful, when I have more motivation I will do it.
My favorite usage for an Engineer concerning ships are typically..
Engi/Escort. Built right you can Tank and DPS at the same time.
Engi/Sci. Shield Tanking never got so easy.. And neither did Debuffing and being able to dish out damage when need be either.
Engi/Carrier. This is like the Engi/Sci except it's just as durable as the old faithful Engi/Cruiser but gives Debuffs from Sci and DPS from it's Pets and it's LtC Tactical slot. It's only downside is it's turn rate. But it's an understandable downside.
My Least Favorites are:
Engi/Cruiser. This is basically a healer, and I dislike playing Healer role personally.
Engi/BoP. Sure you can be tanky, and you can come up with an interesting build set up.. But the set up more then likely will do better in an Escort since you'll get that extra Tactical Console, which can make the difference.
I agree that there is no best ship just what you can suit to your needs, i'm a tactical fed player and i have a Nebula class and its working out great for me. I'm actually thinking of buying TOS Constitution class and the NX class also as different ships i can upgrade and use, i also want the Galaxy class and the Excelsior class refit. but im not to that rank yet lol.
"Doctor, tomorrow morning when they detect the warp signature from your ship and realize that humans have discovered how to travel faster than light, they decide to alter their course and make first contact with Earth, right here. It is one of the pivotal moments in human history, Doctor. You get to make first contact with an alien race! And after you do... everything begins to change."
I think the Avenger Battle Cruiser is the best combination of damage and survivability. I am an Engineer as well and this type of ship fits my play style.
