Cryptic is king when is comes to character customization - it's one of their biggest draws in their games. I love everything I can manipulate and modify - even on my Bridge Officers!
It's just so sad that with everything else we can do to make our characters our own, that we are 'forced' into a rank system by every NPC we encounter.
I mean seriously, we have a terrific, and neverending, HUGE list of titles we can wear over our heads - including ranks. Why not scrap the <Rank> tag in the dialog boxes and replace it with <Title>? Let us customize how NPCs address us in the game.
If I want to play as a Commander (wearing Commander insignia), I set my title to 'Commander' and all NPCs then address me as such. If I chose to be a civilian ship owner (after being in Starfleet/KDF/Republic) flying a D'kora or Tuffli and decide that my moniker will be 'Torpedo Target', or what have you, well then let me do it.
Stop forcing us to be addressed by rank. Give us the customization here that we have everywhere else in our character development.
And yes, that even includes using things like 'Moist' as a title - but since the player is the only one who will see it (other that above the character's head) - who cares? :P
To the people who are bound to come in and say that there are more titles than just the ranks, and some of them wouldn't necessarily be appropriate, I'm sure Cryptic could make it so that it's just if you're using rank title.

does anyone else see what rank NPCs use for you though, and how is it different from the way tittles are now?
It would be most agreeable if we could be referenced by our title instead of rank.
However, this would require a TON of work and coding to make happen. There are probably tens of thousands of references that would need to be changed to "Make it go". Some could be done with automation but many probably would need a manual touch.
As cool as it would be I don't think I see it happening...

Actually it would most likely involve changing a single variable to point to the player's title rather than the player's rank. I seriously doubt they have hardcoded any of those.

That is what I am thinking. If you look at the way dialog boxes work in the Foundry (which I assume is similar to how the dialog boxes work everywhere in the game) there is a <Rank> tag which addresses the player as their rank. It seems (I say, seems, because I'm not a coder) easy enough to do a 'replace' function on all dialogs tags of <Rank> with <Title>.
Of course things are never as easy as they seem. But it sure would be worth the effort for the improvement of game play!
My primary character is an Admiral, because all my other Fed alts are in the task force he commands. So all my other Fed characters stop at Captain, and it can get a bit distracting to be addressed as Admiral just because they're level 50. I'd love to be able to be addressed by my user title instead of the rank assigned by my character's level.

This character is why I don't play my Romulan any more. Tovan Khev is NOT my BFF! Get him off my bridge!
Agreed. I am a Captain and totally don't like being addressed as 'Admiral'.

I'd personally rather it not be linked to title, just so you could still have a separate title and a rank. As dumb as reading "vice-admiral" in dialogue is, reading my title would be even dumber. But really, I'm still in favor of this over how rank is handled currently, I'll just suck it up and change my titles to the ranks I want. I'd prefer if I didn't have to.

Yes Admiral. Sorry, I mean moist.
Seriously, that means "The fiersome Klingon warrior Moist Keshka". How terrifying.
I don't usually read the NPC babble...but I support this anyway. It would make titles a little more interesting, rather than just a throwaway line of text on top of your character name that nobody pays any attention to even when its visible (on ground maps, to team/fleet/friends or someone targeting you only).
And if you don't want to be called Moist, don't choose that. I think it would be funny, though.
And as always I abslutkey agree. This game beeing full of admirals is ridiculous, and for me..ll I just don't want to be one. Admiral is a desk job, no matter how little some people like that...
So I want to be captain first. Also some of my characters are essentially recreations of bridge officers and should be adressed by their ranks.
As a Romulan I would prefer to be addressed in a more "romulan sounding" rank, like sub commander instead of (yawn again) vice admiral.
I'd also prefer to have a system to set the rank independently from title. Seriously "Heavy hitter Darllighter, so nice you were able to help us" would Sound kind of stupid.
But I'd take the "addressed by title" variant any time over the nothing we got for for years.
This would also give the opportunity to implement a lot of missing ranks. Colonel, Major, Commodore, Fleet Captain ect....
I support a possibility to customize our rank and maner in which NPCs adress us. But, like revandarklighter said, this topic comes up since the beta in 2009/10 and to this day, it has never been adressed in any way shape or form. So, I think you can let this horse R.I.P

I've supported something like this since launch. In fact because of the way the game is set up now I almost hate leveling up after Captain. Since at that point I become a Flag Officer who apparently doesn't have a desk job and gets orders from Subordinate Officers.
We may be beating a dead horse but one would think that eventually Cryptic has to listen.

I'm not sure if it has been brought up before as it's own subject.
I usually see references to it only in heated Admiral vs. Captain as end rank threads as a 'work around'. And that's not what I'm talking about here.
I'd love to be able to have more options as to what NPCs address my characters as - from MACO Specialist to Ambassador to Trader to Lieutenant. All these and many more would be possible if the powers that be simply replaced the <Rank> tag in dialog boxes with the <Title> tag.

Would be awesome for the people such as yourself who want the immersion of being a captain of a starship.
I would love it if people would refer to my toons as MACO/KHG members instead of rank.

That's the beauty of it. YOU are the only one who sees them talking to you.
If you want to be called Neutral Zone Master Neo - - go for it!
If you want to be called Moist Neo - - go for it!
At least you have the option to be called something other than Vice Admiral.

I dont know why, but that just makes me think "Matrix"
Guess it's that time of the month. Was wondering where our usual Captain-Admiral thread was at.
Well, c'mon, let's have it. The usual "everyone should be captains!" speech.
i think you need a bigger stick, the old horse threads are all cropping up at once now.
i heard this was being looked into when kestrel changed the acknowledge your species stuff in the newer content.
