Aggro and AI target selection.

How does the AI select targets? I had thought the AI selects the one doing the more DPS or the biggest threat, as in the one with the most thread generation. I had thought thread generation depended on gear and DPS. Is this true....? I only ask because i was in conduit killing badborgs in my fleet mogh and some guy in a scimmie goes all thalaron right before i let loose a BO. the Gateway targets him at start of his Thalaron, my BO hits and it then ignores him and goes after me.

What would this mean? Did i just out threat/aggro a thalaron?

The AI targets threat, then DPS. If the DPS goes above the threshold of the threat (I.E. Thalaron Burst) the AI will change focus. But if you're using the things like the taunt button that Cruisers have, you'll be the target.

I'm not sure what the exact formula for threat is but DPS does play a large role in it.

As to your question, the Thalaron pulse on Scimitars can do good damage under optimal conditions. It is however far from the one hit wonder used by the I.R.W Valdore (Donatra). When it hits under optimal conditions (buffs, debuffs, opponent etc.) it can be spectacular. Likewise it can also fail spectacularly. This is one of the reasons Scimitar captains often prefer more reliable weapons over the Thalaron pulse.

Another factor is the use of threat reduction consoles (available from fleet store). If the Scimitar was using those it would reduce its threat by quite a margin and pass it onto other attacking ships (eg. you).

Yet another factor is whether or not you have points in the threat skill or not. If you have more points in threat than others you'll generate more threat obviously.

So yeah, either you did more dps at that point or you had a bigger threat value than the Scimitar. It's hard to tell without knowing either ship's and captain's specs.

Taunt button? as in the one that adds more threat? the mogh, and other "battlecrusiers" dont have that.

Thank for the info. Considering we...missed the optional(i was pugging) i took it to mean the scimmie wasnt all the great a build....

Well, at the risk of angry mobs dragging me away for heresy, I'll say this much. The Scimitar is probably the one ship in the game for which skill and gear is not optional but essential. As good as it comes out of the box, only a few captains ever harness its full potential.

It is not a space bar cycles all abilities kind of ship.

not even threat can cover high number dps player sitting next to a target faw spamming pulling out 3k a hit on average and a setup that is more inclined towards crit chance and severity as well adds extra problems.

i have hung around this ai long enough to know that threat generated from captain abilities or that cruiser with attract fire only covers so much. my excelsior faw spamming, with alpha, power to weapons cruiser ability plus rep passives and such toward extra damage potential sitting tnext to a target usually provokes its target to shift to me.
    T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW.
