Hi. I am a level 50 Tactical captain. I have about 2900 zen and am looking at purchasing a new ship, but having issues deciding which one would suite better and hold up in combat.
I am looking at the Avenger, Multi-vector, and tactical Vesta. (also looked at escort retrofit but was told it couldn't take fire very well)
I mostly play thru story-lines and PVE (mostly Starbase 24), I haven't started doing PVP yet.
I am currently using the Promethius with 3 very-rare cannons. I'm also looking at getting better boff's and doff's.
i am wanting to be able to deal a good amount of damage but i also want survivability. I don't want to have to escape a fight to heal then rejoin.
Open to idea's and appreciate any advice.
Thanks

Get the avenger. It is tanky as hell. well i can be difficult to use cannons on it if you pvp, cannons on it in pve are fine. it takes 2-3 people to kill mine.....or one good vaper.

Right now you might want to hit up the Exchange and buy the Mirror Universe Heavy Cruiser and the Mirror Universe Reconnaissance Science Vessel for a couple hundred thousand EC each. That will give you a way to cheaply see what endgame cruiser and science piloting at like. The ships you've listed will play very similarly to these cheap ones, but just a tiny bit fancier. Once you've decided which one you like best of these or your current escort, you'll know what to buy.

No need to impluse-buy with your hard-earned zen. Only spend it when you're sure.

Well I purchased the MVAE and hated it. I am not saying it is a bad ship it is just does not fit my play style. I regretted buying it as at that time I was torn between it and the Dread, this was back in the day of c-points and 250-400 dil prices on the exchange.

Where the Vesta is concerned you should always be the three pack line, well that's my opinion anyway. Even with the three uni consoles mine can take a licking and keep on ticking. The "Oh Hell!!!!" bubble has been quite useful especially in red alerts and the one hit plasma bolt from the log when AOEs are on cool down or my hangar pets don't target it in time.

It's a beast of a sci ship running with aux DHCs and full aux power allows for some powerful sci abilities. It is also versatile in the BOFF layout with two universals.

I have to agree with Reginamala. When I started leveling my Rommy toons I was looking for a hangar ship which meant either the Arkif or the Scimmy line. I started building up my zen supply by the time I made up my mind I had 8k zen. In the end I chose the Scimmy line as I am not that good with escort type ships. That left me zen over for bank slots and DOFF slots. I did the same while deciding if I wanted to get the Vesta line a while back and had more left over again. While thinking about it save up.

I can recomend the vesta pack, the avenger and the tac escort, I have all 3 and love em, however it depends on what you want from these ships as all are very different, The MVAE is an ok ship but i do regret buying it, so personaly i cant recomend it as a ship.

Vesta Pack: Shield tanks like a dream, has many toys to play with with its consoles, all of which are usefull, comes with a invul bubble when u use all 3 which is handy as heck, u get the aux cannons, so if your ok with phasers (i aint so i dont use them) you can make a nasty cannon build with max aux power. the downside is its hull, its not great and can melt if u dont take care of it, however its never been a huge problem for me, I use the solani set and it gives me plenty of pwer to all my systems to keep me alive.

Tac escort (defiant with cloak): I like this ship and I run a DHC/DBB build on it to great effect, the cloak can be usefull and also can be a pain so its oneof the consoles u may like or not. the ship can melt under fire, however its faste enough and if properly geared will out manourver and slag what ever your up against.

Avenger: a hybrid of escort and cruiser, has some of the survivability and tankyness of a cruiser melded together with the firepower of an escort and some of its manouverability. The massive number of forward weapon slots make this ship a beast, I currently have a dis DHC load and a pol BA load for it, and i find both are effective in different circumstances, the peista de resistance of this ship imo is the VATA console, here is a scenario, your flying in, blatting torpedoes and cannon shots at your target and you think, hmm could do with a tad more fire power, I know I will launch two torpedoes that will fire tachyon beams or launch more torps themselves and then smack into the target. Basicly the VATA gives you the chance to fire two devices that will smack the target with a fair amount of force, before they do this, depending on your cruiser command, they will fire either tachyon beams, weekening the target, Trans torps which punch through the shields or quantum torps which do a lot of hurt.

Hope that helps, I am personaly loving my 3 pack vesta, its a bit more expensive but its proving to be one of my best ships, however I also like the other two.

I have to agree on the Vesta. I don't have my setup tweaked just right yet, but I concur with the rest of the findings on its performance. Right now I have the ENG version, may swap out to one of the others to see if it fits me better. If you buy the bundle, it's easy enough to swap out as needed, AND you can put two of those really cool Aux cannons up front.

Avenger man, if you don't plan on having more then lvl 50. Treat yourself to the fleet version for 20k fleet credits and 4 fleet ship mods.

The avenger is by no means as zippy as an escort but you can push the boundaries with emergency power to engines and aux2damps.

I'd forgo the vesta. Decent ship but it is a sci vessel. The lack of mobility and tact boff slots may make you regret it.

I honestly don't know what makes up the #1 cstore escort ship, could be an Andorian ship...but the avenger makes a great choice
    Chive on and prosper, eh?

I own the Fleet Avenger and the tac Vesta...

I prefer the Vesta due to high BOFF sci slots.

You might also like to try the Excelsior Retrofit or Regent, the other 2 "Tactical Cruisers". They have more Hull then the Avenger, but they cannot use Dual Heavy cannons. Also the Avenger has a base turn of 9, Excelsior is 8 and Regent is 7. Though the Regent does have the very nice Wide Angle Quantum Torpedo, and with 'teams' no longer sharing cooldowns, the Excelsior Ensign Eng slot is useful for a heal with Engineering Team. Though in console layouts they are 4 Eng, 2 Sci and 3 Tac (4Tac on Fleet versions) while Avenger is 4 Eng, 1 Sci (2 Sci on Fleet) and 4 Tac. Also any C-Store ones you have means you can get fleet for 1 Fleet Module as well, useful if you have a lot of chars. Not sure if this is helpful but to get Fleet versions is T3 Shipyard for Excelsior, T4 Shipyard for Avenger, and T5 Shipyard for Regent, and also the base Excelsior Retrofit is only 2000 Zen, while the Avenger and Regent are 2500 Zen.
All 3 are great ships, but unless you are going to use Dual Heavy Cannons, then I think Excelsior or Regent would work better then the Avenger.

That my thoughts on the matter.

Just listened to priority one, nothing being released with this season but he mentioned there's summat coming in the next month or two.

They're apparently trying to sort loads of ships out for the next expansion.

another vote for the avenger. It fits the bill for tanky damage dealer. You can easily work it to use dual beam banks which are the second only to cannons. You can even use cannons on one but that takes some tweaking as its a little slow for those.

As long as you aren't looking for science abilities to do anything but heal your ship, I think the Avenger/ Mogh is the choice for you.
The avenger is quite tanky and it can put out a lot of DPS. It's not the best tank, but it's really tough. You won't have to constantly disengage a target because it can be setup to take a lot of punishment and still dish it out too. It's also flexible enough to run well with an all beam array or DHC/ turret build. It's even capable of being solid without using A2B and pricey technicians. Now, if you already have a compliment of blue and purple technicians to reduce cooldowns, it only get's better.
DHC builds seem to do a little less damage in STFs compared to good beam array builds, but DHC setups seem to be better in PvP. That's why she's gonna get the votes, she can be good for the PvPer and the STFer folks.
Check out the avenger builds and, on the KDF side of the forums, the Mogh too.

    !

You have to buy the ship. This is the same with all c-store ships.

There is an exception for some consoles in reward packs however they offer the opposite factions console. For example plasmonic leach for Feds as this is a KDF console.

Out of the selections, I recommend the Avenger. Aux to Bat with Fire at Will III, It's too much fun with fleet weapons. I highly recommend it. Now, the Vesta is a damn fine ship, and is equally fun to fly. It would be a good choice.

OK I love the MVAE. It is a little small but the DPS it kicks out is outstanding. And it is very maneuverable so it is a blast to fly.

I haven't flown the odyssey yet but I am going to be buying one for my engineer. The avenger is just too damn ugly to actually fly where anyone might see me.
