I'd like to join a fleet. Many people have bombarded me with invites, but how do I find out what type of fleet I've been invited to join?
I don't pvp, but would be willing to help as part of a team on pve missions. I don't suppose anyone could recommend a good fleet that isn't going to expect me to pvp?
There is a forum section on the main page (http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/index.php) where the fleets advertise themselves. Simply scroll down to the Fleet Administration Station section. It's just before the Support and Test Servers section so it's pretty far down.
You will see Earth SpaceDock, Qo'noS and New Romulus.
Personally, I would like an option that prevents "Would you like to join a fleet?" messages from popping up I find it very annoying especially when someone does that to me in the middle of a f*****g Elite STF mission.
I'm in the same situation, what I'm doing is using the forums to see who is recruiting, then checking to see any web pages that they have. Those that appeal to me I bookmark and check their forums, partly to see how active they are and partly to get a feel for the direction that the fleets are going in. I have my eye on 3 atm, but I'm in no rush, as I want to finish certain reps and the storyline episodes before deciding.

how do I find out what type of fleet I've been invited to join?
You ask them silly! :P
Get a random invite? Send them a tell: "Hi, so I see you've sent me a fleet invite. What kind of fleet are you fine folks? What content to you like to play? Do you have any membership requirements like PVP, RP, or specific donations? Do you enjoy tacos and long walks on the beach that culminate in punching Borg in the face?" etc. If they don't say anything back, you don't want to be in their fleet. If they give you a curt or squirrely answer, you don't want to be in their fleet. Any fleet that's half worth their mettle will give you a good, honest, response when you ask that question. (although IMHO any fleet that's half worth their mettle won't send random unsolicited invites; they should at least say hi first or encounter you in a queue'd mission or something)
I got lucky with my fleet. I met both of the co-leaders in the old Mirror invasion a year or two ago during a good run and overheard them using the ingame voice chat to coordinate. I was actually very anti-fleet/apprehensive at that time because I thought there would be some ridiculous requirements like mandatory PVP or strict RP-like rank structures in any fleet but they convinced me otherwise and I haven't regretted it. It turns out most fleets are actually pretty chill about requirements like that. :P Ours only has like 2 or 3 major rules 'no drama, don't be a leech, participate and have fun and hang out and show that you're interested' and a smattering of minor rules like 'don't put TRIBBLE items in the bank!'
jaguarskx mentioned the fleet administration forum section; there's also a Find Fleet tab on the Social window (O key) in-game where you can search and filter and read fleet's descriptions of themselves. Note: That search/filter is a little buggy and doesn't always display all results (there are over 20,000 fleets in STO) so you might have to refresh the search a few times to get more results.
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
A suggestion about fleets. Most fleets that do blind invite hope to catch new player into there fleet to help with fleet projects. I would never join a fleet that gives a blind invite. I would select a fleet by either the forums or social tab in game. Be picky. Also fleets can make this game a lot more fun. I would suggest joining one the uses Vent, Mumble, or Team Speak. This game is very confusing to new players and it is a lot easier to teach mechanics and tricks (I don't mean exploits) to new players. Good fleets can keep players in the game better than most other mechanic in the game to do so. I have thought about not playing multiple times but the friends and fleet mate keep me from leaving. Also why should I grind somewhere else when I have this game mostly grinned out. Don't be to caught up into play styles as far as fleets go. Once you have joined a fleet watch the fleet chat window...it will tell you if it is an active fleet.

Hello,
May I recommend the fleet that I'm in.. Fed Alliance Omega. It is a part of a much bigger fleet and although it is NOT a T5 yet you have access to the mother fleet.... all you have to do is ask. To get access to the goodies all you have to do is contribute like pennies.... I got access to all the stores within the first 1/2 hour!
Also a lot of helpful/knowledgeable people there. You want to pew pew... just ask and there will surely be people willing to join you. I can't recommend them enough.
If your just looking to purely pew pew tho.. check out my sig for Star Trek Battles. A channel full of pew pew. You don't have to be in a fleet you could be in a fleet to join. There are some guidelines for the channel and it could be for you or not.
Good Luck in finding what your looking for in STO. Feel free to contact me in game for an invite to either my fleet or STB.

As a rule, if you have been "bombarded" with a fleet invite, the type of fleet you have been invited to join is that of a "loser fleet". These fleets are primarily useful for farming FC off of by dumping garbage they are often too lazy to dig up themselves, but ultimately are of no worth whatsoever and you should refrain from giving them anything of value. Also, check their fleet bank for any unsecured valuables you can run off with after emptying your pockets of junk.
I'm in the same situation, what I'm doing is using the forums to see who is recruiting, then checking to see any web pages that they have.
...I should really finish our fleets page in that case I tend to check sites too but sigh at unfinished sites. Yet when I've got a spare moment, I'm in the game and keep forgetting to do anything with the placeholder
Way to many invites to join these unknown fleets groups. If check your messages you can see who and what they claim to be. By accident I did allow one but found out when I needed help with an issue they didn't help much. Getting out of the fleet not easy but found the way after a bit.
I rather go on my own for now and collected all my own points. I will help out others who I see in trouble in these PVP, Enemy an etc. If I wanted to join a fleet that should be my option. They do need to have a button or something in the settings to block popup request.
I can be at the bank, exchange or mail and get these popups for fleet request. Most of them are not in English. They should check to see who they're sending request too.
I'm a new player myself looking for a KDF fleet. I have a special disdain for random fleet invites. Last night, I got a invite to join a fleet styled after a Klingon house. A Klingon does not randomly invite someone to join her house. Being invited to a house is a great honor, and joining a house is an even greater commitment. I concluded that whoever sent the invitation knows nothing of what it truly means to be Klingon and not even worth a hail.
I am reminded of a certain tale of contraband pastries that made its way to the Empire some time ago. Personally, I blame the Romulans. Always blame Romulans, for only they would stoop to such psychological warfare tactics of, "WANNA JOIN MY FLEET?!"
Blind invites are a pain, and some of the fleet names I have been invited to are obviously TRIBBLE fleets to begin with and are more concerned with member numbers and wanting you to donate your stuff to fleet projects. If you donate enough, they MAY let you buy a few items from their fleet provisioning stores.
It got to the point where I started my own and threw all my alts in there just to stop the spam invites, emails, PMs, etc. People usually don't bother you if you are either in a fleet already or have fleet invites blocked... but there are still some fleet poachers that try to convince you to leave and join them.
If you are still looking, make sure to look for a fleet that fits your playstyle... RP, PvE, and/or PvP and find out about their fleet project policies (if any). Some fleets promote by something simple as your own activty while others promote you based on how much you contribute. If you like the name, the atmosphere, the fact it has a website, voice chat, forums, etc. Then give it a try and see how it goes for you.
On the flip side, many fleets have instituded policies regarding fleet holding and bank access because there is a number of people who join fleets just to raid the fleet bank of anything useful and then move on to another fleet. These people (and others) will also join a fleet and buy up everything they can because the permissions for who can buy from fleet holdings were not set.
In that regard, I can understand why fleets have set up access restrictions for the lower-ranked members. I even had to set some restrictions in my fleets for that reason. I'd have people asking me to join, only to find out that they had wiped my fleet bank and left. It was then that I had to learn the hard way not to be so trusting. I generally trust people but had to make some changes to keep our fleet bank from being robbed by people I though were genuinely interested in joining.

The only thing being in a fleet gets you is some slightly more powerful items than you would normally be able to get. If you wish to join a fleet, and want to take advantage of what you can get, join one that is between tiers 3 and 4 in their starbase. This will give you time to build up enough fleet credits to buy anything you want as the fleet progresses. Also, make sure your fleet does weekly or monthly provisioning. You can't buy from the store if there isn't anything to buy. And make sure they don't have an ridiculous expectation of what you need to contribute before they allow you to buy. A fleet that requires you to obtain hundreds of thousands if not millions of fleet credits is just looking for someone to milk off of so they can save their resources.

be careful in these forums acting like a Klingon, the feddy bears outnumber us and will jump you LOL. so be prepared to fight!
All I can say is don't trust any fleet trying to recruit on the KDF side that uses federation avatars. they will never act like Klingons. Unless your only part time kdf or don't really like the empire.
message me in game @icsairguns we can talk a bit if you like and I can point you in the direction of a few decent KDF fleets depending on your playstyle.
and if you are a True Klingon Warrior not some Alien and like a little Klingon rp let me know .
Trophies for killing FEDS ahh those were the days.

and people who don't understand that those provisions that allow a fleet to have items to sell are very expensive. and allowing a person to join who may have hundreds, thousands or even millions of fleet credits saved up from someplace else can wipe out a small fleet. is not the type of person you should listen to.

Thank you, icsairguns. I am likely to shoot you an in game PM. As for acting like a Klingon, I am always ready for a good natured roue with a Fed or two.
I'm interested in an RP heavy KDF fleet. I am also new and would like help getting my feet under me. I'm interested in both PVE and PVP, bat'leth tournaments in particular. I am already having a difficult time with a specific boss in one of the episodes.
I'll pop on tonight so see if I can figure a few things out w/ altering my toon's appearance. I also have other questions that I'd love to post in the Academy forum, but I cannot yet posts new threads. Example: According to canon, how is the house of Mogh doing in the STO time? It might effect my character info since I'm rather partial to that house as a fan. See, a solid KDF fans would help with this stuff.
I would recommend not joining random fleet invites, better fleets should take the time to ask you if you need a fleet instead of spamming you.
If you want a fleet that will pve with you, The 101st Fleet has several helpful pve minded players. While a few of us pvp or spar, we don't force anyone to do it.
If you want, you can send me a mail to Brian@LordSCUM for an invite.
