Tacofangs: EV Suit STF?

mightybobcncmightybobcnc Member Posts: 3,354 Arc User
Environments are your department right taco? :P

A fleetmate had the idea that an awesome future ground STF would be running across the outer hull of a borg ship or space station in our EV suits to then blast inside and finish an objective. You can't beam directly inside due to transport inhibitors, hence why it starts on the outer hull. I don't really have an idea for what the actual objective would be, perhaps shutting down some borg industrial capacity or research, but the set piece you could make out of this would be breathtaking; like the solanae station, or Boldly They Rode, or the Citadel run in Mass Effect. Have some ships engaging with the borg in the 'sky' overhead with a nebula background. (A bit like the old fed tutorial when you can look out the window at the borg fight.)

This would be a great opportunity to have more EV suit thruster maps and environments with an aspect of verticality to them, although I suspect that you might need to do a whole set of animations for attacking while flying. And admittedly it would have to be carefully structured so that players can't simply fly past all the enemies; perhaps with several sub objectives that have to be completed like overloading relays that allow you to blast into the hull in the first place. The other downside is that there are no EV suits that are well suited for fighting the Borg; no EV suit sets with integral remodulation. I suppose you could just do this on a different enemy hull, perhaps tholians since they also have EV suit models already.

.. No they're not.. A goo pit and a cave are not a multi-objective battle on the outside hull of a ship.

I want an EV suit STF that takes place inside an Undine ship. There was a scene in the STO tie-in novel 'Needs of the Many' where MACOs end up breaching an Undine ship and the entire interior is volatile, and they were all wearing special EVA suits and the slightest puncture from the Undine caused the Undine antibodies to rapidly dissolve whoever was inside.

Admittedly, it was one of the reasons I thought they added helmets to MACO/KHG/Omega force suits, for the prospect of Undine STFs that take place inside their own ships.

Even though it sounds awesome and would be incredibly cool, I don't want it as an STF. Why? Nukara hards, that's why. It's no fun if you need a full team to accomplish an STF, but where you already know that 2 out of 5 have forgotten to put on a suit.

If it's an open area, like Bugfera, I would love it.

That's quite the paradox, how could you nerf nerf when the nerf is nerfed. But how would the nerf be nerfed when the nerf is nerfed? This allows the nerf not to be nerfed since the nerf is nerfed? But if the nerf isn't nerfed, it could still nerf nerfs. But as soon as the nerf is nerfed, the nerf power is lost. So paradoxally it the nerf nerf lost its nerf, while it's still nerfed, which cannot be because the nerf was unable to nerf.

I call it, the Stoutes paradox.

A lot of peps have spent lobi and nukara marks (and zen at one time) for top notch EV suits to equip themselves and their away team so it is about time for another map to use them on. However, I'd rater have a Combat floater!

Hmm, I dunno, how do you explain a persistent space battle happening above you no matter when you go there?

So, there was that old STO trailer/ad that featured the MACO armor-clad group floating zero-g style through a decompressed ship corridor. I got the impression from that trailer that they were fighting tholians, I think there were some in EV suits and a simiilar environment in the same trailer. I was always disappointed that the first scene I mentioned at the least was never actually in the game.

    Here's my thoughts:

We've had a FE that successfully experimented with zero-g simulation-- Step between Stars

We've had an event that successfully experimented with large numbers of players using 3-dimensional movement mechanics in a purpose-built, detailed map-- the new Risa summer event.

We've experimented with flashlight tech via EV suits, Hirogen weapons, and Elachi STFs.

Surely we have the tech available for a queued event that involves EV suit players navigating the vacuum of space, exploring a derelict ship or attempting some kind of boarding infiltration or something.

I think it would be really cool. I hope a dev reads this and considers it.

Really? Do you really want the uncontrollable pinballing of Step Between Stars to be the defining feature of a team mission? You think it's hard to herd 4 other cats into doing something productive now, try doing it when everyone's busier fighting their controls than whatever enemies are in play.
Arc is garbage. End of discussion.

Well I suggest you do not team up with idiots then^^

I like the idea. Although I do not think we need ANOTHER Borg STF. And I also thing we should get "old style" stfs back.

It'd be fine if we had a "retrorockets" button that we could push to make us stop moving. needing to manually counterthrust is too much work to do in combat.

I think combat is the issue. This came up when the Risa floaters were introduced last year, but getting the game's ground combat mechanics to function in 0G would be a massive undertaking. Notice the only places it's utilized have no combat. Risa does not have an equivalent of the Winter PvE snowball fights (as much fun as a squirtgun fight with floaters would be), and the segment of A Step Between Stars in 0G is very soundly isolated from any possibility of combat (there's no chance for a stray mob to follow you in there since you have to clear them all to even reach that point).

Control is also an issue. While I got a pretty good hang of it and was able to run the ring courses on Risa at full speed even with crappy floaters, others struggle with it. It sort of depends on whether people are mouse or WASD movers on the ground, steering the floater with the mouse is a lot easier. In any case, introducing combat to it would be tricky, and jumping straight to the level of an STF would probably be a disaster. If anything, they'd add a short combat segment to a featured episode or something first.

Very bad idea, unless ALL mark XII sets get to be EV suits, including Omega, Maco, Honour Guard, and Dyson.
Let us wear Swimsuits on Foundry maps or bridges please! I would pay zen for that.

Well I usually have the same problem. Also, I usually stuck with a low Internet connection, which is why I can't use teamspeak which is why I usually join radmom Qs.

That doesnt mean all content should be gated to that kind of situation. Or to people who are just plain antisocial.
Outside of pvp there is no content in this game that requires even basic teamwork.
People who can't get good teams have enough other stuff to do.
It'd be fine if we had a "retrorockets" button that we could push to make us stop moving. needing to manually counterthrust is too much work to do in combat.

I think its kind of the charm not to be able to do that.
The difficulty of the actual fight would of course have to be balanced to factor in the more difficult movement.

Aaaaand we're right back to the same problem the new Mirror event made perfectly clear. Cryptic hasn't the slightest notion of how to balance combat encounters normally, let alone with extra mechanical handicaps thrown in.

Also, nice job invalidating your argument with the antisocial ad hominem.

Well, if it's regular floater.... and not the screwball space floater.... it's not too far removed from the way flight works in Champions... it's missing a button for "down" but otherwise mostly the same.

I neglected to mention that magnetic boots should be an option and the zero-g/floater aspect would be toggle-able just like on Risa, with various advantages and disadvantages for choosing one path over the other.

Now when I say "path" I don't mean an either/or linear choice or rails, I mean at any point on the exterior you can engage or disengage boots or floater mode to get to/flee from engagements or cross obstacles.

I don't think complaining about the movement is really fair. If you're really trying to use 2-dimensional WASD controls to move in 3 dimensions as opposed to using the mouse to steer (which is insanely easy and not hard at all, I invite you to try in the upcoming summer event) it's more your fault than the controls'....

OP, you need to be punched in the face for this thread. With this game the way it is with bugs and so forth, you seriously want an STF in EV suits. How about you go to the Foundry and create your own STF, instead of posting an absolutely insane idea with no merit. But I'm also guessing your probably related to the same person who wants a T5 crapstitution as well:rolleyes:

In one of the new Undine "Stfs" we're beaming commandos into an Undine installation to open the maws protecting the "planet killers"

How about for X STF.. we take on the role of one of these teams.
