You know what Star Trek needs? Almost an entirely new game so to speak. I think that once a player completes the four reputation system factions, this should unlock the "known" space boundaries. Players should be able to move into new parts of space. Designers could leave large sections of the map blacked out and the only way to get the areas "open" would be to "trek" thru them. Inside the blacked out or "unknown" space areas we should have random encounters with ships. Perhaps some of these encounters we can "click" to hail, and perhaps some of these encounter should just start. Like a surprise attack or something.
We should also be able to "trek" around and locate new worlds, "new life forms and new civilizations"
The goal isn't to obtain more gear or more ships. Perhaps our goal is to obtain accolades for exploring and having first contact, or our goal is to unlock new worlds and new parts of the map, new technologies can be discovered, missions can be run to have them join the federation for example...this is the direction STO should have gone in to begin with and it's where we should go now.
The wars and battles have been done to death. We want to explore...that is what Star Trek is ALL ABOUT!!!
You do know that using the word "trek" a lot does not make something Star Trek, right?
Using it twice constitutes "a lot"? What? Are you sensitive to the work trek? trek trek trek trek trek trek...go play star WARS if you have a problem with trek.

Stop. Saying. Trek.
You sound like the forty year old Dad trying to stay relevant with pop culture. "Hey there, guys! I was just doin' the ol' Space trek thing, just trekkin' along with my laser ray gun and my Vulcan mind reader doohicky!"

"A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP"
Sounds awesome. As long as my Klingon officer can siege the planet and then beam down and conqueror the people and then turn them into 2nd class citizens cleaning up after the Torg pits.
Sounds great. Imagine flying through uncharted space not knowing what to expect, with no guarantees. Things happen to you at random. You could be moving for a minute or ten minutes before encountering anything. An attack can pull you out of warp, giving you the choice to fight, negotiate, retreat if outnumbered, or even send a distress call. Find something in space, like a nebula or white dwarf and scan it by travelling though or around it. After the scan is complete, maybe have a chance to study it more in depth. Unexpected thing might happen.
Maybe you're moving along and you get random hails from Starfleet telling you to do stuff on occasion.
Like the OP said, this could be a zone you can leave any time you want to get back to doing PVEs or going to star bases and what not.
The whole thing would be a ton of work for Cryptic though. But man, would it give the game a new life, and yeah, would feel more Trek-like.
OP's idea is what I had hoped that this game actually was when I first started playing. To trek around the cosmos would be amazing and it would have plenty flavor for everyone including conflict, exploration, etc... It's really a shame that the game has limited itself so much.
I especially thought there was a missed opportunity with the Delta quadrant. How great would it have been to actually be stuck there and have to make your way back over months, even years on your character. It certainly would make rolling more than one character worth while imo.
"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." - Rocky Balboa (2006)

They already have an exploration system in the game. All those nebulae and what not, like the B'Tran. You go into them and you explore them. And they randomly generate missions for you. Some don't even involve any content. It's tied into both a daily umbrella mission as well as the diplomacy system.
I'm guessing some vets have been doing ISE so often they FORGOT about this content. And some new players may have never even noticed it was there.
But there is a Star Trek Exploration system in place in Star Trek Online.
This game is lacking in the exploration department for sure. The current Star Cluster Exploration assignments are boring, give terrible rewards, and are generic (I think I got the same assignment 3 times in a row once just with different dumblooking aliens). Also as stated earlier the gameplay isn't really geared to anything like the series or movies, there are no happenings going on in your ship that the captain gets dragged into, no random confrontations, no strange alien technology... the most diversity we get are the waveform mini-games, doff assignments, and the sterile environments from the generic exploration generator in the clusters. I think a season focused on exploring and getting to Star Trek's roots is definitely in order... it would require a lot of changes to the game (Random Event Generator, Exploration Generator Revamp, perhaps even unique interactive doff assignments), and as history has shown it probably won't be something we'll see in the future or we'll see a lackluster attempt at best

the problem is that the exploration system in STO is bad, it could use a major rehaul, or at least copy/paste of other ST games, it would still be an improvement.

They know this. And have had it on their schedule for 3 out of the 4 years the game has been live.

Don't kid yourself; when they do, it will be front page news.

It may happen. But don't hold your breath.
