The Big Three appreciation thread (Intrepid, Defiant, Galaxy)

I just made VA with my newest toon, a science character and I have the most fun I had in this game for a long time.

I picked an Intrepid class science ship and it's crazy fun.

Sure, I don't kill fast, but this will improve a bit with better gear.

Last night I fooled a bit around in Ker'rat and could zip around the map fast and had enough survivability to escape if needed from players and Borg.

Absolute highlight: I was pushing away some cubes that got a bit to close for my taste with repulsors and incidentally uncloaked a KDF allied Scimitar that was sneaking up on me.
Apparently, if he intended to attack, his alpha was not ready at that moment, cause I lived through the encounter. A quick subnuc got me the time to get away behind a structure and get distance.
Some other players used the opportunity to attack in the meantime and he battlecloaked.

I returned to the general area and used my repulsors again which came off cooldown and, what do you know, I could break his cloak again, only this time I and the other players aroudn were ready for him right away. he goit chased off again and cloaked.
Thanks to his drone pet I could open a gravity well on him even after he vanished and got him trapped.
he was toast another subnuc and a few seconds later.

So, long story short it really is not necessary to have the most recent lockbox or 9-pack ships to have fun in this game.

I am considering the vesta for next month, but I just might stay in the Intrepid and just go for a fleet upgrade next opportunity instead.

What are your best moments with one of the iconic big three?

Never really flown the Defiant much, Nor the Intrepid but The Galaxy...

Oh man, i love my galaxy.

I was in Kerrat, Farming away - When i hear the sound of a Bop decloaking. Oh no, make that 2! Their initial strikes fail, as i'm able to keep my shields up, (Unfortunately, i couldn't really do much but tickle them with my phasers) then a Jem Escort joins the fight, THEN a mogai shows up, I lasted about 3 minutes but eventually went down. Pretty awesome for a ship that's considered the worst in the game :D

Well, if there is something the galaxy can do in this game is taking a pounding. ;)

I still think that the Ensign seat on both the Intrepid and the Galaxy should be changed to a universal.

Yeah that'll happen just as soon as Cryptic gets around to making a Galaxy interior like the constitution/defiant complete with decks and Ten forward and everything. :P

I don't do much in PvP. Never really liked it. But taking a galaxy through a pve match is a blast. There's nothing like being able to tank through a crystalline entity shockwave. I've flown many ships in my time here, but none matches my experience with the galaxy. Can't wait to get the fleet version.

I have had many good times in my fleet defiant. I haven't pvp'd with it and I don't have one favorite moment but I like taking down big bad guys with the little thing.

1 vs 1 pvp, random guy in a D'D, me in my defiant. We both cloak off the bat. I decide to decloak to draw him out, it does, we have a fight, he engages cloak to start healing, having not got my shields down. I stalk around the planetoid for a bit, and hit my cloak at the exact same instant he decloaks not 5km in front of me, he sweeps past.

It was a rather impressive piece of timing.

I'm not much for pvp either. I have never flown a Defiant, but I do have an Intrepid, though it gets used infrequently, but man I do love my Gal R. I know it's not the best tank in the game, but I love it anyway. And yes, it can take a tremendous beating. That being said, my favorite moment in my Galaxy was soloing Klingon scout force without dying. Thought I would give it a go solo, took me about 45-50 minutes but I managed to beat it without one single respawn. The I.K.S. Kaarg and his armada at the end was tricky, but I still got them too, and again, no deaths. I don't care who wants to hate on the Galaxy, I love it.

This are the 3 most iconic ships of Star Trek availible as an end-game ship. (Constitution & NX completing the roster of iconic ships)
As a huge TNG & Galaxy fan, I usually use my Gal a lot more often than the others. I just love that ship and what it represents.

It's all good fun - granted it's not your best damage dealer, but then again I'm not in the slightest obsessed with DPS. And it suits what I want to do perfectlly - not to blow up. ;) Literally, the ship is a flying fortress, I love the amount of tanking it can do and I love the fact that I'm allways able to exit an hostile encounter in one piece. Even if it took a lot of time to finish that encounter.

Best laugh I ever had with my Galaxy? Going Picard solo on a tactical cube, saucer separation and all, piercing it with phasers untill it blew up. :D

Based on the UGC Podcast last month the Intrepid is supposedly getting some updates around Season 9.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

Odyssey does this, but better. It's a little more ponderous, but an RCS console and turn-enhancing impulse almost negates that. It's tough like the Galaxy, yet it really packs a harder punch (especially the Tactical Oddy). What good is it to last a long time in a fight if you're not returning damage?

I only use canon ships on my characters, although the only "big one" is the Explorer on my main, although it has become a Venture-Type refit in the meantime (mostly because I like the 2409 refit designs and because the Galaxy model really shows it's age in comparision to the nicer ship models introduced later on). The other ships I use are a Nebula on my Sci and a Cheyenne on my fed tac as well as a Negh'Var on my Klingon.

The most epic moment is probably that I prevail through everything with the Explorer and enjoy the game while so many people whine how bad and useless she is :D Of course the class has problems, especially due to the change of paste and the power creep introduced in the game, but just raging that it's a useless ship shows a lack of creativity in my opinion.

Because in STO, the Galaxy is nowhere near "Big 3" status. The Odyssey, Sovereign, and a few others totally eclipse it.

    Pointless thread is pointless.

Of course the Sovereign and Odyssey would have eclipsed the Galaxy in canon too. :)

So the best thing a player can say about the Galaxy class is that he enjoyed lasting a short while before being blown up. A poet could not sum up the uselessness of the Galaxy more elegantly than this.

You don't have to win every battle to have fun in the game. :)

"Critics who say that the optimistic utopia Star Trek depicted is now outmoded forget the cultural context that gave birth to it: Star Trek was not a manifestation of optimism when optimism was easy. Star Trek declared a hope for a future that nobody stuck in the present could believe in. For all our struggles today, we haven’t outgrown the need for stories like Star Trek. We need tales of optimism, of heroes, of courage and goodness now as much as we’ve ever needed them."

I was hoping this thread would have been about the Excelsior, Nova and Akira. The three favored ships of the dev team.

Or the Scimitar, Scimitar and Avenger, the three really popular ships I keep seeing.

Or the JHAS, just the JHAS.

Nothing wrong with achieving some accomplishments with a genuine tank. Unless you're a tank hater?

I am not going to search-out a Podcast from early January. Simply type Podcast UGC into google and then listen to the one with the Geko interview. :)

I like the intrepid alot, even for a Tactical player ( I hate those people who say you can't fly a science ship as a tactical officer blabla)
Galaxy I dunno, but the galaxy X is pretty cool except for the boff layout
Never had a defiant though, never found it that interesting
