Pseudo-Cannon Broadsides

mimey2mimey2 Member Posts: 0 Arc User
So, I was messing around on tribble, testing out the Dyson sets, when I tried something: I put the Experimental Proton weapon on the back of a ship.

Now, the Proton Weapon is a 180 degree weapon, and can be used on any ship, in any slot. The Proton Weapon can also be used as both a beam and a cannon, and drains less power than most weapons.

But it got me to thinking about how it's possible to do psuedo cannon broadsides, without running all turrets in the back of a ship.

Something like:

3 Single cannons and like the 180 degree quantum torp, up front
Antiproton turret, Omni-directional antiproton beam, KCB, Proton weapon, in the back

(presuming a 4/4 layout of course)

It technically has two 'turrets' in the form of the omni-beam and KCB, and an actual turret, but this is really just theorycrafting of course, and I was curious what folks thought.

This is just one idea as well. We could use other things, like disruptors with the Elachi cannon thing from the lobi store, or Romulan rep weapons with the Experimental BA, etc.
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.

I think the proton weapon fires more per cycle then other weapons....this would lead to more drain. Similar to how a dual cannon drains 6 buy due to fire twice as much as dual heavies (just 10) it ends up a drain of 12 by comparison

Idea sounds fun. If for uniqueness above all else
    Chive on and prosper, eh?

Really? Hmm, I'll look into it more.

Honestly though, I do think that single cannons should be usable on the back of ships. I've always thought that a 'cannon broadside' would be an excellent thing to have, and give a different option for that kind of tactic instead of only beams. Felt like single cannons are very underused in the game.

I actually have an Odyssey Science variant kitted out like this:

    Fore:
    3 Fleet Plasma Single Cannon
    1 Fleet Quantum Torp

    Aft:
    2 Fleet Plasma Turrets
    1 Kinetic Cutting Beam
    1 Omni-Directional Antiproton Beam

The power drain from both the KCB and the ODAB can get a little staggering at times, but it can be offset by using the efficient fire cruiser command setting, as well as having points in the right skills.

Each shot may not count for much, but given the rapid fire rate on the turrets and cannon, and it more or less turns into a shield-eraser if you kick Rapid Fire III into play - which WILL affect both cannon and turrets. :)

Fore and aft 180 degree weapons will give you an extremely narrow broadside. At least with beams you have about 70 degrees of leeway, but with 180 degree weapons, it's basically dead-center or nothing.

There's an issue with STO where it doesn't really enforce the arcs. Basically, you can continue to fire outside the arc. So, it'd basically be a wiggle boat - as you wiggled in and out of the arcs...and the weapons would continue to fire.

Wiggle Boats...yes, I lol'd at myself with that one.

How's that different from the single cannon fits that no one use anymore? It has to do with dmg loss over distance, and more importantly, faw covering full arc while csv covering only 90 degrees.
