So is this why D'stalh left STO???

generalmocogeneralmoco Member Posts: 1,634
Lurking around the ARC game news I came across this announcement of PWE releasing a "NEW" MMORPG called "Swordsman," if one recalls back a couple weeks, Mr. D'Stahl left the Captain's Chair, to take care of a "TOP SECRET" game being made by PWE....

So is this it???

Did D'Stahl leave STO for a Martial Arts MMO???

That's kind of naive to think that this game was developed within the month that he left and this new announcement.

As far as I know, Cryptic is not developing Swordsman -- Dstahl is working on another Cryptic project, not another PWE project.

And Cryptic has a few titles they are working on, none of which have been announced publically yet.

People were tweeting Branflakes about it. He said no. This new game isn't being developed by Cryptic either, it's in house PW.

I doubt this is it. Since he has only been gone for a very short time. This has been in the works for at least a year. Since it usually takes that long for a game to come out. I'm sure he is involved in a project we won't see until late this year or next year.

    FO' SHAME!
Yeah that kinda sucks, but when you think about it, it boils down to several possible things.
Either he was not as passionate a trek fan as previously stated (in which case let's hope our new overlord is). OR there was a big fat pay check, or some form of career enhancement possibilties, or maybe personal development of some fashion.
Wishing him the best and welcoming the new captain. *salutes*

Cryptic as a separate group doesnt exist any longer unless you can say for sure their finances are not merged. Cryptic merged into PWE back in 11 and the name is just for show. And yes it's way too soon for Stahl to have much impact on the project, it would take a while before any of his crazy ideas got around that people would recognize. If he is into another mmo, something like this hack and slash "Swordsman", then its hardly what i would call new and original and as a result it would be difficult to try figure a way of making it look different from every other hack and slash based mmo's.

When I see "hack and slash MMO" it gives me the image of TOR. So PWE is going to that weak formula? I hope they enjoy losing millions of players too like TOR.

Actually, I think they're going for something more akin to TERA or Blade and Soul.

Not that, not a pirate/age of sail game... hmpf.

*obscure shoot in the dark* Several days ago I stumbled over an artwork with a guy & a flintlock (i think) and something that looked very much like an Illithid and a cryptic logo on it. A stand-alone "Spelljammer" Game/Expansion to NWO using the STO experience for managing your space galleons?

I got it! D'stahl is helping the NSA integrate themselves into Arc. :D

No? OK I'll crawl back under my rock. It's too hot outside to wear my tinfoil hat anyway. :(

Heh, something the NSA would keep Geko away from...eh?

NSA: What do you mean we can't have the info?
Geko: Well you can...it's just inside a Lockbox. You have a chance with each Lockbox to get the info you wanted.

    FYI Folks:

'Swordsman' isn't 'new' per se. PWE is doing an English translated port of PWI's 'Swordsman Online', which released in the Asian MMO market back in 2010. Unless PWI somehow contracted Cryptic to make the game for the Asian MMO market prior to the 2010 release, I doubt Cryptic Devs or Cryptic Management have anytnhing to do with the English language localization and port of that MMO for the Western MMO market.

    It gets into that whole...

    Perfect World Company
Perfect World Entertainment (PW in the US).
Er, whatever the European and Japanese subsidiaries are called.

Then you have folks like Cryptic, Runic, and whatever companies are out there.

And to be honest, I've never been able to keep much of it straight. Is Cryptic still split out into multiple divisions...wasn't there a Cryptic North formed last year or the year before?

Is Cryptic a child of PW or a child of PWE? PWE's a child of PW...is Cryptic a grandchild or a sibling?

And oh so many fun things...eventually they'll say what he's doing and then folks will know.

I still think the idea of him working on a Targ breeding/fighting collectible digital card game for the Huawei TRON system stands out as the most entertaining...but different folks will find more entertainment in others...

cant see any reason why not, PWE bought cryptic out in 2011 and ever since it's lead the way on the F2P front and these lock boxes. now others are following the trend. some of these Asian playstyles and ideas are like bacon eggs sausage and toast with beans and now the western player base has gotten a sample and its becoming more popular.

if PWE has proven anything the past half a decade is that it has succeeded in adapting it's own values to an untapped market, so why not it's own traditional hack and slash Asian inspired mmos? im not a plant for pwe, not by far, however it there for anyone to see. cant see any reason why swordsman cant be a moderate success like its other games have become.

Say what you want about DStahl; He has lied, mislead, served false info, and then proudly told us about it; but he did hold together a sinking ship and skeleton crew with duct tape and promises long enough to get rescued and saved from oblivion by a much larger shark in the pond. He also rescued a valuable IP from development & MMO hell and made it a moderate success with very little support. The story is actually impressive from an objective standpoint. After this Cryptic adventure his job prospects must be wide open. I don't blame him for leaving for greener pastures after STO...

Don't get your hopes up. It was one of those Speculation Threads and someone linked a bunch of (several years old) artwork with Cryptic Logos. I did not watched any of those more than a few secs & I might even mix two images together in my mind. Rest is jumping conclusions of stuff that could make sense (unlikely another mmo themed of what they already have (High Fantasy; SciFi, SuperHero); taco (i think) already dismissed age of sail and this one; they have the knowhow (StarTrek&NWO) & the contacts (Because NWO) to put it together).

Edit: Hmpf, ok, was the first Pic here: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?p=15327201#post15327201

Cryptic is owned by PWE. PWE is owned by PW. PWE also owns Runic and Cryptic North.

PWE's purpose was to bring PW's games to the American/European market. They are also working on converting PWE's games to the Asian market - NWN's is being converted for Asia as well as for the Console market and I would expect STO will follow suit at some point in the future.

Cryptic has several divisions: Executive, Foundry, Development, CO, STO, NWNs, and DStahl's new game. The Executive deals with CEO's and the business side of things. The Foundry Team bounces between games and makes Foundry updates for them all - though they have spent most of their time on NWNs of late. Development is the base team that goes in and starts new games: they set the foundation that the game's design team will then go in and build up from. Each game has a Executive Producer and several Lead Designers.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
