Content should never be removed. Re balance the rewards, sure fine. Run limited time events around content, great. Please tho stop removing content. There's been a few stfs that have now been added and then removed as being limited time events. Why? Why, would you ever want to limit player choice in what they want to play? Why would you ever take the time to create content then remove it?
Please stop adding content for limited times and please bring back all content that has been removed and put it back in game.
This game needs more content, not less. This game needs long term content, not limited time content.
OP's not wrong. In a state of the game like ours, where we're seeing less new replayable content than ever, the idea that these queues are being given dev time and resources to be enjoyed by the playerbase for ~1 month of the year is ridiculous.
First it was winter. Then winter and Summer. Crystalline entity got snuck in there somewhere, still waiting on that rerun so I can get the doff because I opted for the non combat pet last year. Now Elachi alert is gone. Next up will be the new mirror, then who knows what else? The Undine thing on tribble right now?
It's the same principle with not bothering let players use the fed tutorial interior.
Why make all this content we enjoy and come to the forums and say we want, and then limit it and ostensibly taunt the playerbase like "nyah nyah this is what you could have every day if we didn't need to pad metrics?"
Yea OP got a point.. why does content keep getting removed? Doesn't seem to be any other direction or long term goal other then separating us from our cash.
I got hope... but that's all I got. I feel like a paper target in ways about 10 years bast the range of a sawed off shot gun... take s a whole lot of shooting and energy to get rid of the target.. very spectacular, loud, and exciting.. but really inefficient.
I sure hope they actually have some sort of "blueprint" for this all...
After 4 years I still feel like I'm beta testing a product thats "almost" ready for prime time..
I would like content to stay. Exclusive limited time only missions are the antithesis of the 'casual' game STO is supposed to be. Forcing players to do 14 dailies in a 3 week period is not the sign of a 'casual' game.
It's another sign of PWE's business in grindy games.
I understand the reasoning behind it, but I don't agree with the ethics of it. I understand why it is the way it is, but I wish it was not.
We have the solar system that is Foundry only, we have the Utopia Planitia shipyards that is only open to the public on First Contact day (or week or whatever the time frame is), we have Q's Winter Wonderland which could just as easily be transported to Andoria to serve as a year-round map like the Risa event map, only dolled up more for the holidays.
We have both Risa maps, which is a step in the right direction but I kind of wish they'd get rid of the old version entirely.
I would like to see the return of the Undine fleet action, the return of the DS9 fleet action, the return of the mini-missions on Starbase 24 and the Klingon Scout Force (which is still buggy as ever).
I like the adventure zones, but I think I would be just as happy if there were additional social zones connected to mission chains, made on a much smaller scale. It's not that I don't like Nimbus or New Romulus, but maps half their size could serve as iconic locations in the Star Trek universe and used for missions, like Bajor.
The emphasis on queued content is a little disheartening. Starbase Fleet Alerts are still abused often by people warping out prior to the last wave, helping rob other players of their chance to kill the named flagships for accolade progress (it's important to some people). Part of the problem with that is there's very little content for pure Fleet Marks that is not incredibly repetitive. We're given 'false' choices of Starbase Blockade, Starbase Incursion, etc., when it's pretty obvious very few people do them, or those that do usually have no idea what to do -- and the fleet mark pay-out tends to be smaller for the time spent.
But we still manage to find time to make limited-time content for the grind factor and to pad population metrics because the people in charge of Cryptic's purse-strings aren't happy unless their North American market is following their asian market trend.
Unfortunately, PWE and/or Cryptic is going to have to make the decision of whether or not Star Trek Online is going to be a casual game, or if it is going to evolve into another grinder.
The evidence I have seen in this past year has already given me that answer, though. And this limited-time Mirror Invasion is more evidence that things are going to 'stay the course' in fraudulently keeping player numbers high by providing these exclusive limited-time events.
Once it's done, it's set in stone. Look at Defera. Nothing ever changes for the better anymore -- especially when it comes to making money.
So don't bet on it.
My Old Blog about things that could and should have been added when I wrote it. Not sure what I want to do with it now. I'll just keep it available now that most of it is outdated.
I agree. Limited time events make me frustratedly less likely to log in, not more likely. And they have nothing to do with what money I spend on the game -- I spend when there are sales!
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
+1 OP! It is dumb that these things are removed after only a few weeks. They should remain in the game and be available for us to play, with awards on par with an elite STF. We need new/more content to keep things fresh. Missions are nice, but how many people play the story missions multiple times? New ESTF level content is what I would like to see.

Rotating some events in and out will mean higher peaks of players engaging in them, rather than them becoming another event that sits there with nobody queuing for them.
I agree. I still miss the Elachi Alert fleet action. It was the best space based source for Romulan marks. All that is left is Azure Nebula Rescue in which, no matter how good you've been, you will never earn more than 24 marks.

If it's Romulan mark space content, I figure it will queue, since currently there is absolutely no meaningful Romulan-mark space content. What we have now doesn't have an Elite setting, and as such, the pay is basically nonexistent, because "Normal" means "Waste Of Time".

No, giving players high rewards means high peaks of players engaging in them. When the mirror event comes, everyone will play it not because it's limited time but because it gives a disproportionately high reward.
There would be no missions that "sit there with nobody queuing for them" if there was a standard for the reward structure that ensured all of them were actually worth playing, instead of a confusingly arbitrary morass of "anything goes." The only unifying thought in the PvE queue rewards at the moment is that nothing ever comes even close to elite STFs (excluding these limited time events). Its no wonder everyone remains totally obsessed with STFs and only plays the rest of it if they need a specific kind of rep mark.
I too miss the DS9 Fleet Action, but I think it's a few years too late to be bringing it up, don't you?
I never played that
For some reason I was logged out when I became ra when it was still around....
I don't really get cryptics approach on that, there is a lot of content either removed entirely, or "changed" instead if adding new one.
I mean the new stfs are so different from the old ones, why didn't the old ones stay? Why didn't they make new content?
What about the pvp space assault map whose disappearance was not even worth mentioning in the patch notes?
What happened to the undine red alerts?
The convoy pvp game?
Why can't we keep the old mirror event? Ppl liked that one, so why not making something new instead of taking it away and then add something changed only temporal?

Elachi Alert was only a temporary mission anyway to go along side the launch of Sphere of Influence. It was always going to be removed after the initial reward period of The Obelisk was over.
Agreed this wasn't well documented, but nevertheless, it was still a temporary mission.

And rep grind.

It's so wasteful.
I'd like to see this and the mini-mission in Klingon Scout Force return, bug free.

Same here.
And I am going to use the royal "we" also.
We are ok with scheduled events.

and i have just put away my thermal underwear, darn!
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
I never played that
