Cryptic, your Foundry tool is rough. It can be used to make ship interiors with some work. You already have the content (in some areas) to make it so - what do you need from the community to engage at maximum warp?

Do I have to work for free?

    From my old post here:
I was watching on youtube, the STO Dev Panel from August 10, 2013 at the STLV Convention (quiet day in the office). At the 31:34 mark (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXGVsVWXWHY), someone (in a STO uniform cosplay) asked about custom ship interior design similar to Hideouts from Champions Online.

The response (I think that's Stahl himself) is that the is a dev named "Andrew Aims" (spelling?) who has "promised us that within the next year... that he will take the foundry editor which allows you to create internal zones and much like in Neverwinter and not so much on Champ[ions Online]... but Neverwinter create your own 3D interiors whether it is dungeons or stuff... he promised us that he will be able to take that tech and put it over to Star Trek so that you can fully customize your entire starship interior or your starbase... so that's something we've been talking about for years and hopefully it's going to happen."

    So, here's hoping.

So technically, yeah, they thought about it and they have a guy working on getting tech over to STO that would do that.

So they need a year to swap assets and some functionality, and maybe even then it won't happen?

So I have to work for free?

Yes? If they need a year to get it ported and to see if it works, then they need a year.

I actually posted a similar thread to this a long while back, but it basically called for them to release the assets used in creating ship interiors into the foundry. This way, people would be able to make their own full ship interiors, and the best ones would be chosen by cryptic to make the actual interiors for the ships. Cryptic obviously doesn't care about giving people accurate or decent or even full ship interiors, so why not crowd source it to the fans?

Allow fans to link a few authors to a project and let them make the full interiors to scale?

The best ones would be made into the actual ship models, though Cryptic might need to actually get turbolifts to actually work and we know how they feel about getting things in game to actually work, but the idea is solid. There are many fans out there that would LOVE to be able to make this happen.

From my first post in this thread, they seem to looking into bringing over the tech from Neverwinters to allow you to create your own 3D interiors (watch the youtube link at the 31:34 mark). How far that tool would go is anyone's guess.

There were also these lead up twitter messages from Geko every month or so after that August convention panel:

"Sitting in STO foundry meeting. Addressing more exploits and looking at what features we can get from neverwinter. #babysteps"
    https://twitter.com/CaptainGeko/status/378273367419154434
    (September 12, 2013)

"In a foundry meeting with NW guys prioritizing foundry features to port to STO over the next 6 months or so."
    https://twitter.com/CaptainGeko/status/385895193242656768
    (October 3, 2013)

Granted, it's been only four months since that October tweet so that six month we may see some of this Foundry stuff come with Season 9 in April >_>

They have since said that the NW tech for interiors is incompatible and those Foundry upgrades aren't happening.

guess they have to redo interiors then.

It's quite unlikely that we'll ever get big foundry improvements because only a small portion of players actually use it.
I would love to visit this star in-game...or maybe this one!

Sounds a lot to me like the old "implementing that tech isn't possible" line SOE would give for not implementing things like atmospheric flight in SWG. Yet the team that remained until the end of that game managed to pull it off.

As in, it's more likely that someone on the team just plain doesn't want to do it, when it can be pulled off and would benefit the game substantially.

i think as soon as foundry usage is open to freebies ( non-subscribers) the foundry would be used by a lot more people...

also, if this is the system used...i don't see where the problem is, since it's already there and only up to upgrades.

Actually, its more likely that doing it wouldn't make them enough money to be worth the effort. Have you noticed how few bridges they actually release anymore? There is a reason for that: because they weren't selling enough to make it worth the time to make on a regular basis. And if they spent the time required to let us make our own bridges and ship interiors in the foundry, guess how much money that would make them? As much as they are currently making from foundry missions...none.

As far as SWG, those devs knew the game was about to shut down and weren't concerned with the long time financials anymore, so they just decided to try something cool. If they game hadn't been shutting down that probably never would have happened and they would have continued with normal mission content development.

Cryptic could easily make money off it if they wanted. Let people make their bridges and interiors in the foundry, then where you customize your ship when you chose your interior you pay to link your custom interior.

As far as them making new bridges/interiors, the reason I have not bought one is they keep selling them as a package. I JUST WANT TO BUY THE INTERIOR.
