Strange question, but i have used windows 8 professional now for a year, i have no problems doing anything at all in sto, especially doffing. and my laptop is 4 years old...
wifes lappy is only 1 year old and hers is using windows 8 home edition and hers is even smoother than mine....
As long as you meet the minimum Specs for the game you should be fine. You might need to run the game at a lower setting, though.
The main issue laptops tend to have is overheating. If you plan on playing STO via laptop for prolong periods you might want to look into a cooling pad.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
Currently playing STO on a Dell Latitude 3540 wth the following specs.
- Core i5-4200u (1.6GHz / 2.6GHz) - [Intel HD 4400 integrated graphics core]
- Radeon HD 8850m
- 4GB of RAM (1 stick)
- 1920x1080 resolution screen
- Windows 8 Professional (Radeon does not seem to work properly with Win 8.1, currently troubleshooting)
Yes, STO can be played in Win 8 / Win 8.1. The Radeon does not seem to work with games (at least on my laptop) when Win 8.1 is installed so I reverted back to a Win 8 image I created.
The Radeon HD 8850's performance is between the GT 750m and GT 755m. I play at full resolution with maxed out graphics with no issues.
I also tested the Intel HD 4400 for about 2 days and found that it was capable enough to play STO 1600x900 resolution and low graphic settings (minimum is the lowest setting). It is playable at 1600x900 resolution and medium graphic settings, but dropping down to low provided better performance and the graphics still looks pretty decent. An Intel CPU with the stronger HD 4600 graphics core would probably be fine for playing at 1920x1080 with low graphics quality.
Also, you do not need to download and install STO on the laptop. The game does not write anything to the Windows Registry.
Simply copy the STO directory from your current PC / laptop to the new laptop you will be buying. When you attempt to log into your account I believe Cryptic will send you an e-mail to confirm that STO can be played on the new laptop. This is basically a security measure.
