Why do you avoid the Q present boxes?

o0kami87o0kami87 Member Posts: 590 Arc User
I've noticed many people will walk away from the Q present game. I personally like it so I'm wondering why others don't like it. also would like to hear from others that do like it, what's good about it and what's bad. Personally I prefer it to mindless button pushing that was the ice race. I got to where I could watch tv or work on boff assinments and win that race from mussel memory at the same time.

Well you wonder why others don't like it... And... An (as an educated guess based on image chat comments and forum posts) 99 % of the other ppl here wonder what you could possible like about it....

It takes forever and without using exploits it's sometimes impossible to q.
Add to that that it is sometimes hard to find/ get a party crasher in the first place and the fact that some ppl make this game for multiple characters, doing it 5 times a day is one thing, doing it 50 times per day another....

Well it's not exactly what I'd call difficult -- although it's probably more difficult than it needs to be given the situation. But the real issue is that it takes ages, and it's not fun.

it's bright and colorful and keeps my attention :P but really, I do this for more than one character too, not 10 but lets see... about 7 though I've not had a problem getting a crasher in a timely fashion. I will agree with kestrellius that it's harder than it needs to be.

I can't speak for other people but it could be more a question of starting another while the first one runs. I do them three at a time, because why stand there for 30 seconds when I only need to see the last 5 to get it right? It looks like I'm just starting and running away, but I'll be right back.

1.) I have 19 characters that I would like to get access to the Dyson ship.
2.) If I have to wait more than 15-30 seconds each it will take more than 2 hours to get through all of them.
3.) Having to play the box game with q 50+ times strains my eyes.
4.) I don't skip so much as start multiple so I can "do more than stand there". (In low population instances so that I'm not affecting others.) And I try to clean up after myself, but after the 10th or so character it gets really old.
5.) Check out Priority One's podcast (Released yesterday, featured in site news today) where Mr. D'Angelo talks about repeatable vs replayable content. This is repeatable. It is not so much replayable. Chasing him is much quicker, if no less unfun/annoying.

If it was a per faction unlock as opposed to a character unlock and I only had to do 3/day, I would probably stick around and do them. As it is now, the ROI for the boxes is too low for me to stand around and do it.
Other valid reasons: Colorblindness (I'm not, but I imagine that the color choices for the boxes aren't particularly great for the people who are.)

You got some serious Downs going on if the Q boxes are challenging.

The old academy particle-scanning event had more challenge!

This is just sitting there for the better part of a minute watching boxes shuffle. Hell, you can activate 3 at once, run back to the first and just guess and the law of averages do the work for you.

This right here. They don't really want to take the time to do a shell game, and why should they? It's just the same thing over and over again. I don't blame them for wanting to do it as fast as possible.

There's nothing "challenging" about it, and it's certainly not fun.

Two reasons I can think of: sometimes the boxes lag--even on a powerful new computer with a decent (for the USA) internet speed--and interfere with the player's ability to do the minigame properly, and also if you have a lot of characters the "fun" wears off after a while.

Some don't leave them, per se. If I get the boxes, I go start another or 2 more. You can have 3-4 of the boxes going at once. After starting the last one, go back to the first. Might be done or almost done. When done, turn on shooter mode. The Reticule will change on the box that he's hiding in. (AKA you don't have to watch the boxes at all!) Pop out of shooter mode, choose correct box, and then hustle to boxes #2 and repeat. and etc.

This can be just as fast as chasing down runners. One note: The boxes will go away if you don't choose w/in a certain time limit so you can't do too many at once.
Sometimes I think I play STO just to have something to complain about on the forums.

Its boring to sit there waiting, and there is so much foot traffic around that its possible to miss one of his jumps when an NPC walks through the middle of it.

If nobody is around I will start another one about halfway through, go back to the first one and finish, then get the second.

Efficient does not equal impatient. When it gives you the option of playing 2 games then why play the longer one?
Most people seem to be doing it on multiple chars and lets be honest...it really isn't enjoyable. They really should have made the presents shorter. It wouldn't even effect the "challenge" of it anyway.

I skip over the presents in hopes of a runner but I try to make it back to my presents. Usually I get back and see Q at the very end but other times I just guess with mixed results. Either way it is pretty fast. I always go to the lowest instance and don't feel bad because there are enough Qs to go around.

About 9 days left to go...phew.

It's only a challenge if you're a Gorn or don't know about the crouch cheat.

I did it once a long time ago maybe 2 years ago but haven't bothered since then. This ship isn't good enough to make me do it either. I like the anniversary episode missions but not these Q mini games or the poppers they give out.

-The boxes take too long; I have 5 characters to do this on.
-NPCs walk through the boxes while I'm trying to concentrate
-The boxes are not game content that I'm seeking out. This is a tool. It is a means to an end and that end is the ship. If there was no ship involved I wouldn't do the boxes plain and simple. This is a grind. Grinds are not fun. Therefore I want to minimize the amount of grind I am doing (again, 5 characters) so I can get back to doing team content with my fleet. Therefore the boxes are less desirable and less efficient than the runners.

They should make a 'grind' that's tied into doing a number of STFs or New Romulus content or Dyson content for their next thing instead of ice races or party boxes. At least that is content that people already want to do.

may as well take the bait knowing you will likely catch something. but for this one i did it on purpose.

    3 q chases or 1 q present?

you could be done and away to do other things before your fnished with the second q present. not impatience on my end, im currently doing the grinds, which means getting from place to place each day, and while your right it is inconsiderate, we are not the ones who created it like this. and challenges come in many forms, but other challenges take priority over this optional.

I personally don't dislike the game, however the NPC's walking through are an annoyance. Next year I think it will be time for something new. It has been previously suggested a game based on "whack a mole" . On completion you still get the set amount of marks, over say 5 rounds, but then add a 6th, where Q then challenges you to complete a certain amount of whacks within an alloted time to win the secondry prize (Dil, Party Popper etc). If you complete the bonus level and still have time remaining on the clock then the amount of time left is converted into extra marks, so if you have 10 seconds left on the clock you earn a further 10 marks, this will also help take away some of the daily grind that others dislike so much.

I dont mind the mini game. in fact to a degree i even enjoy it. its only annoying when all the boxes cross over and you cant tell where the mini Q has gone.

the walking NPC's are also a pain if they get in the way.

To those saying that getting a party crasher is difficult, just change instance to one with less players in. It becomes oh so easy in an instance with only 2 or 3 players in it. :D

As to walking off from the presents, doesn't bother me. What bothers me is when somebody runs up to a party crasher just as you arrive, triggers it and THEN walks off... Guessing though that that's their intent. Again though, easily avoided by just changing instance. The very full instances seem to contain a lot more people doing it just to annoy folks.

To be honest, my eyesight is not good and I cannot afford new glasses. It is hard enough to see which box Q is running to, or from. Then, on top of that, I have had other players to run back and forth between the boxes, blocking the view. Also, a lot of then were placed where the NPCs walk through, making it even harder to compete.

So, first thing I will do is find the instance with the fewest players before starting. Then, I will look for the ones that you chase Q in. After finding one, I will run back, and start selecting the different boxes. I do this to help clear them out faster for others also.

If this was something where we had a choice of which one we wanted to play, it would have been a lot better. Besides, they could have included the 40 Q commendations in the featured episode after the first play through. This would have allowed us to get an extra 80 Q commendations, and I would personally rather do that, instead of the boring grind.

It is more boring than the radiation scans on New Romulus.

well they don't force you to sit there and do it.

so i'm not going to sit there and do it.

plus i like to do atleast 3 at a time if the mini-q's are close together.

so hows that for a challenge you nobs.
