I have been working through the Dyson reputation with my recently leveled Fed Engineer, with plans to use the Dyson reputation set for a shield tanking Ambassador build. But now, with the new feature episode and the new Hybrid set, I find myself torn. They both look great for a tanking build, but I obviously can't use both. Which do you think would be better for a shield tanking build? The FE set seems to have better PASSIVE set bonuses, but the Reputation set may have the edge on single item abilities, especially the shield array. They both have a very useful toggle ability for the 4 piece bonus.
Which would you choose???
Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

I appreciate the response, and I've used the MACO space set, it's fine. But I'd really like to get opinions and thoughts on comparing the two previously mentioned sets.

The Rep set just has a really low shield capacity but good specials, great for hit-and-run ships like escorts and BoPs that can withdraw and recharge, but not so sure about using it for sustained shield tanking. With that and the fact that the FE set is a heck of a lot cheaper, between those two choices I'd go with the FE set and save 130,000 dil.
That horrible low cap dyson shield needs a fix... If I'm supposed to deal with low shield cap for tanking, I'd rather use borg set with its awesome hull + shield set bonuses. Dyson tanking bonus sounds impressive on paper, but in reality you'll be bleeding a lot of hull before it kicks in, you end up dying with full shield, it's stupefying.
Could never understand the concept of hull tanking, which is why i specifically dislike the steamrunner.
I just can't understand using the Dyson rep unless you have a cap ship and an eng captain to deal with the bleed through. There is nothing worse then being an escort and realize you're being cooked inside your shields. It must be what an egg feels like.
No matter what, the concept of hull tanking is just so foreign to me I'll never understand it. It's like saying I want to use my face to block your punches so hit me with your best shot.
The dyson reputation set has a very low shield hp. It works great in a ship with a high shield modifier like a science ship but it is not so great on cruisers and escorts. The set seems to be geared to resist alpha strikes but it might not be so great for sustained tanking.
The FE set has a better shield but you need to get the anniversary ship to get the 4th set piece. The set powers seems to be aimed for sustained tanking too, like the hp leech.

Well I have the new Dyson ship ,I was hopeing it would do well with the 4 Pc set against the voth in the contested zone. It is fast and turns well but the hull is so low that when it gets in a gravity well it gets stuck and is toasted . I can't even pull out with evasive manuvers. Any ideas to counter act the voth gravity well ?
Other than that it is a fun ship and the cannon is killer

Spec into or equip Inertial dampeners consoles to resist.
For pure tanking and defense, you can have better sets than the Dyson and Solanae Sets.
However, Dyson Rep is easier to grind than anything else.
The Solanae Set can be completed from doing the FE x3, and having a Dyson Ship will get you the full, 4 piece bonus. Again, Solanae is easily accessible and you are not sacrificing alot of resources to climb up reputation tiers and spending even more resources to buy them. All Solanae Set requires is time.
One thing I want to say about the Solanae Set is that if you naturally run good subsystem power, most esp. with Engines, then the Solanae Set's Hyper-Impulse Engines will be a terrific choice. Moar speed = Moar Bonus Defense
The only other special Hyper-Impulse Engines out there are:
Elite Fleet
Omega
Aegis (+5% bonus defense from engines, another +5% from 2 piece bonus)

I use the Adapted MACO version for fun

The MACO set and the new Solanae Set are compared to tanking versus tac oriented.
