Force Field -> Shield? (FE - No Spoilers)

orangeitisorangeitis Member Posts: 5,222 Arc User
In the new Featured Episode, all things that most Star Trek fans recognize as "force fields" are now called "shields" or "shielding". Is there any reason for this change, or is it just an oversight? I just thought it was a bit odd.

I think it is about intent. A shield protects personnel from various hazards while a forcefield has far more uses. So a shield is a forcefield, but not all forcefields are shields.

Sort of like how all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares?

Exactly. Holograms use forcefields, but obviously they aren't used to protect people from dangers aside from the Doctor.

Considering you walk right through them, I am unsure if they are in fact force fields

Different grade of force field. Keeps air in but anything that really tries can pass through it. This is not unknown in the shows.

According to most sci fi's including my own, Force Fields > Shields is correct.

Shields: Can block a portion of energy attacks. Reduce damage from most attacks, but not fully. Shields can deplete.

Force fields: Are solid barriers that block 100% damage. These fields also focuses its defensive energy to point before an incoming attack hits. Enemy firepower must exceed the force field's power to cause any damage to the defending ship / person. Force fields never deplete and are always up. ( it really depends on what sci fi you're watching / playing. )

To be honest I have no idea how force fields work in Star Trek. LOL.
The dress is gold and white. Over 70% people says so. When viewed from a certain screen angle it appears blue and black. The dress displayed on amazon is a blue and black dress, but it's not the same dress in the picture. If you're seeing blue & black you're slightly colored blind. A normal upright screen = white and gold.

Everything you could ever want to know about canon Star Trek force fields.

It's funny, I always assumed a shuttlecraft could pass through the shuttlebay force field because its own shields were modulated to match the force field, but that doesn't seem to be canonically supported.

It's a shame - the same reasoning could be used in the new mission, with the player's personal shield.
You're right. The work here is very important.
