well that explains what happened to me..! NOT a healthy area to wander into in a mere battle cruiser.. I got run over by a battle fleet centered around one of the incoming carriers
I lasted all of ohhh maybe 12 seconds after they engaged. Not aligned with either side, just passing through on my way elsewhere...
Nothing like being road kill in someones ELSES war! Still a newb player in eve..most folk play eve are beyond serious about it... Make the most hard core of STO players (much less any other MMO) look like mere dilettantes..
This wasn't a single ship with a hold full of PLEX or implants that got wasted. It was quite literally dozens of some of the rarest and most expensive ships getting blown out of the sky in a battle that's likely to decide an ongoing faction war. It's going to have repercussions throughout the entire game world.
It's events like these that really make EVE an interesting game to follow, even if I will never ever be able to handle playing it.
This is why I enjoy EVE. I love to hear about it every time it makes the news, but man, I don't want a second job.
Yeah I used to play a free browser game with vaguely similar mechanics, but..... it was far too time consuming. I'm never playing EVE, just because of the huge time sink it entails.
People who play EVE either have waaay too much time, or way too much disposable income. I would never pay real money to acquire something that a band of social rejects (goonswarm, and others) could take away.

I played EVE for a while but the training scheme, the death penalty, the whole thing seemed so lopsided, the game seemed like a legalized pyramid scheme, players who were with it from the start are at the top of the pile and new players were basically playthings for the older players, after a while it just wasn't any fun, that and I never liked the point and click AI control system for the ships.
For the life of me I could never understand anyone spending 200k on a videogame, that's just insane for something you can never touch, that exists only as pixels on a screen.
If something is not broken, don't fix it, if it is broken, don't leave it broken.

The OP's description of losses was somewhat incorrect. 200k (dollars) was the estimated total price of ships destroyed. 200k ISK is not the same as 200k dollars.

Various sources put losses into the trillions of ISK range. And it was losses incurred collectively by hundreds of people. Likely even more if you include the various corporation/alliance members that may have contributed to the construction of ships/gear lost in the battle, but did not personally participate.
EVE: Much more fun to read about than it is to play.
this is very true, or at least to me. Its sounds amazing but in practice is rather pants, but fair play to those that enjoy it.
If EVE actually had a minor death penalty I'd probably still play it but i have no desire to actually lose months of work because of a mistake, or a lag spike or even in an epic battle. It must be soul crushing at times.
I do wish STO had the ability to have these types of massive fights. Even if it was set up so that when you die, you are out of the fight but dont actually lose your ship or anything. That way big fights could play out naturally until one side wins without fear of having your work thrown down the toilet.

I think EVE online is the kind of game you'd like to watch, or hear about, but not one you'd play unless you were brought into the game with ALL the advantages.

This. EVE just scares me because as I understand it, it's a game of the haves and have-nots.

There are many aspects of EVE I wish STO emulated. Those ultra-massive fleet battles are just one. The economy and freedom of choice in your career are a couple others.
Tried EVE like a year ago. It felt too much like a work, rather than acxtual game, so I stopped playing. Although I understand why people could get invested into it so much, given what it offers, as well as the challenges it puts in front of the players.

That's certainly what it feels like, the game is a great deal more about statistics than talent or tactics, although it does have very nice graphics. People obviously like it or it wouldn't still be running.

That's the spreadsheet game about Swedes in space, right?
The Swedish Chef was never in "Pigs in Space". But that would've been hilarious if he had been. After all, the Chef never just throws a *fit*. He'd throw other things too.

Eve is a scary place for a man with non unlimited resources...

I played EVE online for...3 years about six years ago if not longer. I had to quit. It takes a lot of time and energy to compete in that game.
And talk about learning curve, whew...that game is intense. Fun but way too serious for me.

Exactly. It's run by trolls, for trolls. Hugely fun to point at and wonder, not so much fun to actually play.
My character Tsin'xing
good ole russians. give em this, they sure know how to fight an enemy :P
seriously though, the fleet maintaining control of that system deserved to fail.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

Imagine the uproar if you lost your Bug because you ventured into Ker'rat.

An Arena mode for STO wouldn't be a bad addition.
I woulda dropped this game after day 1.
I cannot fathom how people would tolerate something like that.
