Why? Wide angle torps sacrifice a LOT on their rate of fire, and with the new improvements to cruiser agility it doesn't take much to just swing a forward tube toward your targets.
i agree that it would be fair to give everybody access to wide angle torps (kind of already in game with the ferengi swarm missiles)
Since it was done with quad cannons, i think 180 torp launchers will be available faction specific in the near future.
but to be honest, they are not that great. An additional beam yields more benefit than a torp launcher with 180 degrees.
If kinetic dmg is needed, the cutting beam is the best for the job.
The reason you would want a wide angle torpedo is to be able to use Torp Spread following a Fire At Will (or, for the unusual ships out there, CSV + single cannons). Because of that, the ferengi missile is not comparable to a torpedo because of the absolutely useless way that tactical abilities modify it. Torpedo abilities are based on multiplying base damage, but the ferengi missile's base damage is pathetic. It's all about rate of fire instead of damage.
I'm still wondering why a seeking warheads have a 90degree firing arc.
The arguments for base velocity imparted by a launcher only go so far. They're missiles(they can home) not rockets(dumb fired in volleys, but can't home). A given design may lose some fuel doing a 180degree turn, but they can do that.
I don't mind the reduced damage from a 180 torpedo. I just would like some parity among all the factions to support all types of playing style.
I personally find playing a cookie-cutter pure beam boat or pure DHC escort to be unfulfilling. I'm in love with my quantum wide-angle torpedos on my fed toons running beam cruisers/carriers and I'd love to have the same thing on my kdf and rrf toons.
True, torpedos in Star Trek are guided projectiles. I don't understand why they need a specific facing to launch but I'd settle for a wide-angle torpedo for each faction.
Having a choice of a 180 degree torp wouldn't be anything to sneeze at.
I can imagine an Aux2Batt Mogh beamboat with TT1, APB1, FAW3 and nothing useful to slot in the Tac Ens other than a TS1. And while the Mogh ain't slow, it's just so much more practical to not have to move for the spread.
(Damn, I just exposed my first KDF foray into the OPness that is Aux2Batt FAWBoats. )
TOIVA, Toi Vaxx, Toia Vix, Toveg, T'vritha, To Vrax: Bring in the Allegiance class. Toi'Va, Ti'vath, Toivia, Ty'Vris, Tia Vex, Toi'Virth: Add Tier 6 KDF Carrier and Raider. Tae'Va, T'Vaya, To'Var, Tevra, T'Vira, To'Vrak: Give us Asylums for Romulans.

Don't make ARC mandatory! Keep it optional only!
