Hey all, just wondering what your opinions are on science ships being commanded by tactical captains?

Some of my very favourite ship designs are science class and I'm desperately trying to figure out the best combination possible.

Any suggestions would be more then appreciated :-)

I love the Mobius for this purpose, but you could go Vesta also.

My Tactical Republic Reman flys the Sci-Bird. I like the sci-spam options that the ship gives me. Granted I don't do the best damage, but it does give me the satisfaction of messing with people.

For a tac captain, I would have to say the Fleet Nova or tac Vesta are the best choices. Set up correctly, both can be absolutely devastating.

totally awesome combo, though i would go with the more destructive sci powers than the "messing people's rotation up" stuff
the synergy of tac and dmg abilities is simply more obvious than draining the enemies power. Don't get me wrong, that works too, but fire on my mark and APA just work too good in combination with TBR, photonic shockwave or grav well 3.

my choice would be a vesta variant.
    Go pro or go home

Very much looking forward to trying out some of these ideas!

Agree with the theology behind tac captain skills synergising well with Grav Well or TBR!

I'm OK with not doing the best DPS (got my avenger or FACR for that), just want something a little bit different ;-)

Tactical captain abilities buff the damage of sci powers, not just weapon damage. For this reason Tactical captains are actually a better fit with many science ship builds then science captains are.

since you want to be a tac flying a science ship already and different how much more different do you want to be? if you want to be really different then you might want to fly the olyympic class fleet retrofit or olympic class retrofit

Hey any officer can fly any ship. I mean I have the 2 year anniversary Odyssey and I use it with my Tac officer.

Funny too, buddy of mine was flying an avenger and was a ligthyear ahead of me, and I go screaming past in my oddy.

Kinda hilarious watching a ship twice the size of an avenger go screaming past. Like watching a Porsche get passed by a big rig.

I actually happen to own the Vesta 3-pack, as well as the Fleet Intrepid and the Mobius.

Glad to see that im not alone in my wish to have a Tactical Science Ship, and from what i can gather there appears to be a few solid combinations, especially a Torp Ship/Grav Well Combo! ;-)

    Hmmmmmm :D

A tac can do really, really well in a tac vesta, Wells, fleet Nova, or recon sci. Those all have just enough firepower bite that with the right build you'll enjoy them. A great mix of firepower and science trickery.

I'm sure you could finagle a good build for the Intrepid or DSSV - but I don't feel those perform as well as the ones I listed earlier. For a science captain - yes. For a tac/engineer - not so much.

I'd like to put my Tac toon in an Intrepid, but I just don't know how well he'd do. Intrepid (USS Voyager) is my favorite of all the Fed ships...just wish it were a bit more flexible (or maybe it is and I just am not good at getting the best out of it).

Thats the exact problem im facing too, I absolutely love the Intrepid ship design, just wish i could find a way to make it work for a Tac Captain! :(:(

The Intrepid is not hard to setup for a tac captain, but your tactical abilities are obviously limited. To be honest, it is not a terrible ship for a No Win Scenario setup.

I look at this ship being more of a shield tank than anything. High shield modifier, increased hull, and a load of sci abilities. I can attest that the ship can take a freaking beating.

That said, if you are looking on all out dps in a sci ship, Fleet Nova or Tac Vesta will be better choices. If you want to do more control/support for the group, the Intrepid is not a bad ship.

    Thanks in advance :D

I think tacs work better in sci ships then scis, personally.

Simple matter of overspecialization. Sci in a sci ship doesn't really gain much. A Tac can push its damage. An eng can do some wonders for their survivability. Sci is just sci and more sci... It's not terrible but I don't personally find it optimal.

My sci spends 90% of her time in an escort or cruiser. The closest thing she usually sees to a pure sci ship is her Atrox, and yeah its sci to the gills but also a carrier.
I once again match my character. Behold the power of PINK!

This was how I had mine set up when I was flying it, along with my skill point allocation.

    Doff's Are:
1x Purple Grav Scientist (the CD one for TR and GW)
3x Purple Deflector Officers (for reduced CD chance)
1x Purple Projectile Weapons Off (for Torp CD)

Tac consoles are actually Fleet Spire Consoles, 1x +CritD and 2x +CritH

Thanks for that colorblind, fantastic resource for me to tap into! Going to have plenty of fun creating and testing this build, however after reading your thread I'm now torn between a fleet intrepid and a fleet nova! Choices choices!! :D
