Hi, ages ago since i didnt try this mission in new romulus. And i am a bit concerned, i dunno if am really bad at this game or something else.. xD.

How the hell do you guys kill the final Tholian captain and his minnions without dying 2, 3 or more times?? And what the hell is what that guy throws at you that you die instantly even with full shield and health strenght?? maybe i am missing something, but its really frustrating. Because i cant say the game is hard, the only thing i can say is that the game is cheating. :D:mad:

My goal is to kill em without dying lol. Well, i tried 2 times, no luck. Ideas?

Melee the Tholian captain with swords. Energy weapons cause him to charge up that one-hit kill attack, While Melee knocks him down.

Swords are faster than Lirpas or Bat'leths.

So Equip a sword to your character and let your crew do their own thing.

So, thats the only way?? there is no any strategy or something with energy weapons?

The need to switch to a melee weapon every time i enter the caves is a bit annoying. And plus, my boffs cant use melee weapons so, should remove their weapons lol??

I have the pounce and lounge attacks, but the only thing they do to the captain is ocasionally knock him down, but the damage i deal to him with those attacks is ridiculous... so they are pointless as well. Im just thinking on just abandon this mission for good, or keep trying it when i go to new romulus.

I cant even stealth and go back to recharge shields or hide, the tholians seem to have an anti-cloak detector or something...:D

The Tholian Captain in the caves is a notoriously unpleasant fight... I've died an awful lot of times myself, there. The only things I can suggest are a) the melee thing will knock him out of his charge-up, if you are lucky on the timing, and b) that insta-kill blast has a 180 degree arc, so if you keep spread out, you can keep some team members alive to rez the ones who've fallen. (Keeping on the opposite side of the captain from the rest of my boffs gets me, personally, killed - but leaves the boffs alive for some emergency CPR.)

Why can't your Boffs use melee weapons?

They can, and the tacticals are very effective.

Just like it has been pointed out already, melee is useful in fights like this. The only thing you're actually doing wrong is only using half of your characters fighting potential, melee weapons are included for a reason. Learning how to produce exploit and expose attacks is key to dropping enemies like Tholians and even better Borg as a Bat'leth doesn't need to be remodulated. So fight like a Klingon, in your enemies face, not like a Starfleet officer trying to keep his uniform clean....

Because they will not attack if i equip them with melee weapons. They will get stuck waiting their abilities to load and thats it. Its just the AI that is stupid and there are a lot of cases (there is a post in the forum). A lot of people cant equip their boffs with melee weapons because they will do nothing.

I wish (as i said tons of times in that post) i could use my klingon boff with a battlech, but i just cant, he will do nothing. And yes, i could use a melee weapon, but i see non sense to be forced to use an specific type of weapon. I dont see the point of this mission, i think it is just bugged. It is not logical, even if the tholian captain is so strong, that he can kill you in 1 single shot.. no sense at all xD. Star trek online sometimes dissapoints me so much, it is supossed that those fights must be harder because you need to apply more strategies, but what cryptic does is not to raise the ai of the enemies, they just cheat them and thats it, there you have a harder enemy. This is really sad in a game like this, where day by day, the ground fights are losing weight because there is no tactic or strategy at all.

Anyways, thanks for the tips guys, since i have plenty of romulan research and marks are not a problem ( i just was trying this mission until now for fun) i will just avoid this mission for now on.

You'll get him. Just load up on 'first aid'-kits.
Everyone dies a lot here. Eventually you'll get him.

Yeah, I'm averaging some 3-5 repawns there. Really really not good at ground combat. :o

Although I think I may be getting a tad better at it lately.
TOIVA, Toi Vaxx, Toia Vix, Toveg, T'vritha, To Vrax: Bring in the Allegiance class.
Toi'Va, Ti'vath, Toivia, Ty'Vris, Tia Vex, Toi'Virth: Add Tier 6 KDF Carrier and Raider.
    Tae'Va, T'Vaya, To'Var, Tevra, T'Vira, To'Vrak: Give us Asylums for Romulans.

Don't make ARC mandatory! Keep it optional only!

Another way that works it to make sure you have boffs that drop mines. Drop a couple sets at the entrance to the cave, then back off and let them follow you into the cave. Have some turrets already set up in the cave to increase firepower. Mines will take care of the minions so you can concentrate on the Captain. Yeah, we all died a few times on that one.

LOL. Nah, i already tried with mines and as u say, in the entrance of the room. No result, i die 3 or 4 times anyways. I dont have tier iii mines, but i used a tier ii quantum mortar and a tier ii transphasic mortar, and the damage dealt to the captain was just ridiculous or it didnt have the effect it should.

I noticed, the weapons malfunction of my borg boff is the most useful skill in this area against the captain. I discovered that i can tell my borg boff to use it on the tholian captain, and then i activate my tactical iniciative skill and recover the cooldown, and i tell "her" to use it again. That was the most useful thing i did, and still i died 2 times before i could kill him.

This is one of the toughest missions I the game. I thought I'd somehow forgotten how to play STO when I first encountered this mission, I was so bad at it.

My strategy is to keep moving constantly and focus on killing everyone in the room EXCEPT for the main guy. When all the easy-to-kill minions are dead, you and your BOffs will all concentrate on the big guy and take him down much easier than you would with all those other distractions. (You will still die a lot, though).

That will never work for me, anyways. Tried so many times, and like with any other fight with more than 1 enemies, you will always aim for the minions first, to let your boffs concentrate fire in the dangeous one, thats a must but not only for this. But even doing that, it doesnt matter, cuz by the time the captain is alone, you ve lost 1-2 boffs (and i can revive em since the captain wont let me) and the damage you inflict to the captain is stupidly ridiculous and you die before u can even make some real damage to him. After 4 deaths, well the captain is badly damaged :P and u can finish the job.

But everytime, it feels like this mission is broken or something, cuz the captain is not only hard, hes cheating... :D

Anyways, as i said, the best tactic for me was the supression fire and weapons malcfunction. But i just stoped doing this mission, since i really dont need it and its not funny at all.

Well, that was one new way to beat the captain... his huge head got stuck in the wall when he tried to charge down the hallway to deliver murder. He got sufficiently wedged in there that he couldn't be targeted with direct fire, nor could he escape... fortunately there was a Quantum Mortar at hand to gradually pound him into smithereens.

Now if only I could claim that I planned it to happen that way.

Set up a command in the hall, shoot his minions, duck back, heal, hit another minion, etc. Then go after the Capt. And who cares if you are incapaitated, you get a free respawn from nearly the same spot...

The point was to kill the captain WITHOUT dying.. and thats one of the problems, yea i tried that a lot of time (in the beginning mostly) but it doesnt matter if you back up, since the problem is, everytime i show my head, i get killed by the super mega hyper tachyon charged burst or watever the name of that thing is :D of the tholian captain.

Btw, i dont need to back up everytime i kill 1 minion, i always manage to kill all the minions without dying and no back up needed (it cost me about seconds to kill the minions) , the problem is i cant kill the captain in time before he uses that lethal thing with me. It doesnt matter if i hide, he will pursuit me and i cant do anything to hide / kill him. And in the process, my boffs are dying one by one xD. One of the problem is , no matter what weapon i use, the damage is not enough to be able to kill him fast. I cant even use the stealth to hide, something that surprised me as well xD.

You have to run directly into the room he is in, after you drop the shield.
Run around the large computers and use em for cover. That is the trick.
Pick off his minions with ur energy weapons.

Fight the Boss with a sword. Back him into a corner and he will get stuck. Then u have him good.

Also, use your Twin shadows to fight him or a Psionic Pacifier from your fleet to confuse him in the ground battle. He wont be able to target u while u are fighting him.

I threw down a smoke grenade also, it seemed to work. But then again I had him stunned already.

Move your team back to end of the hallway... plant mines either yourself or your away team at front of cave. set up turrets in the middle between cave door and where away team is. you go in snipe and run back and keep shooting with away team. mines and turrets do dmg and rinse repeat for each group. Never die... away team doesnt run in and aggro everything.

if you can drop a shield generator near where the turrets are as well... your team or yourself should be just at the very edge of the area of effect. shield gen normally gets shot up first along with turrets... leaving your away team time to unload fire. ae weapons here is good too... mini guns, full autos, split beams due to the limited frontal area of attack the mobs must come thru.

I fired a few shots then hid behind things and kept moving. It works quite fine as he can't shoot through things and is often too big to maneuver around them.

Used my flamethrower last time, only died twice. The narrow entrance tunnel is great for the flamethower.

I agree with the melee option too but as most others have said be prepared to die a few times, just the way it is.

I'd love to know if anyone has done it without being killed..

That was my question in the post. I used to die only 2 times, sometimes 3, but thats all. The whole point was to kill him without dying one single time. Anyways, im not doing this mission anymore (its stupid) but anyways, thanks guys.

I beat him the other day with 4 engineers, 4 mine fields, and 6 to 8 turrets in the hallway. Worked great.
I had two or three doffs with extra turret on use. I really kicked his butt....
