So my Deep Space Science Vessel is starting to get a little long in the tooth, and I'm seriously contemplating trading her in for a newer model. I just can't decide what to get. My captain is an Engineer - Vice Admiral rank - and I'm running a drain build based largely on the Breen Absolute Zero set. Despite knowing a thing or two about builds and skill planning, I'm more or less a casual player, so squeezing out every last drop of performance isn't an issue. I do just fine in combat, and am not looking to change a lot of things up.
I've narrowed my choices down to the Atrox carrier, the Vesta Multi-Mission Surveillance, or the Voth Palisade; which of those three (if any) would be the best general step up from my DSSV?
EDIT: Thanks for the advice everyone. In the end, I went Vesta and I'm having a blast working things out!
Personally, if it was myself, I wouldn't pick any of those, I advocate getting a FAHCR (Or Fleet Excelsior). Granted, not sure how it would do on a "drain" build, but it's a fun ship, with plenty of options.

Vesta Multi-Mission Surveillance Explorer is a versatile little platform with nice options for both sci and DPS. The Auxiliary powered cannons (dismiss, pull off ADHCs, and reclaim for a full set) are nice to have both fore energy weapons and Sci abilities at full power. If you have multiple Fed characters or plan to start nay more, the fact that it is an account unlock make it a nice alternative to the character bound Palisade. Depending on your Lobi or EC reserves, it can come out to a lot less Zen or grinding to get too.
I wouldn't go Atrox unless you've played carriers before (like the free KDF Vo'Quv or cheap Mirror Vo'Quv), as they can take some getting used to. Some people love the Atrox... most don't.
Palisade is a very nice ship and the PvP forums were alight with delight when it came out. Quite possibly the best Sci ship since the Temporal Science Wells, but still a fairly expensive single-character ship. In PvE, though, the Vesta can dish out higher DPS with it's ADHCs for most events.
I would not advise getting only ONE of a 3-pack...at some point you inevitably regret it. Get the full set or not at all. I would further advise against the Atrox: It's not a very good ship, having an inflexible, cumbersome boff layout, very poor maneuverability, and a lack of corresponding frigate pets.
I personally love the vesta bundle. I seen alot of tuff one's and they do well with energy drain to... Atrox honestly isn't that good simple its not the best sci choice. The only two other ships as in sci are fleet nova or wells. havent used it yet but heard nice things about voth science vessel too at least u can get a cloak on it.
The limited sci ships is another reason i gripe at cryptic they really need to come out with anothe sci ship for zen store. Ship selection for a sci is limited.
One made the comment the fleet excell this isnt a good plat form for a sci sorry but the doff lay out leaves u open to tractor and grav attacks. Unless u have invested heavly in eng skills other then that fleet excell is fun pve if u are a sci. truthfullie my favorites are vesta or nova.
I would go with the vesta. Its remarkably versatile.
My science ships include the vesta three pack, the wells, the fleet nova, intrepid, fleet nebula and the atrox.
If I could have only one the Vesta would defiantly be the ship of choice. Its boff layout, hanger and option to use aux cannons make it too versatile to do without.
I would only recommend the atrox if your looking to put together a spamtrox build. With two hangers of elite scorpions, a romulan hyper plasma torpedo launcher, some mines and some projectile doffs this thing has some great potential to fill your screen with junk.
Beyond a spam build the atrox isn't a very exciting ship to fly. You can do a fair bit with it, but that can be said for any ship if you know how to build it.
I havea problem with faster heavy hitting escort in my atrox. But my vesta is sick and nova moves like a escort so both have that abil to move fast. and with alot of runner's in pvp i think thats a asset
Well, you're going to get alot of recommendations for these 2 ships.
Vesta - OP, do everything, build it up to do anything ship. Turns well, good firepower while still focusing on Aux Power. Oh, and it has a hangar.
Wells - Very flexible BOFF station setup. Another OP ship. IMO, it's really an Escort disguised as a Science Vessel with the benefits of a Science Vessel and handles and fights like an Escort still. In PVP, this has replaced even the OP Vesta as the most frequently used Fed Sci Vessel.
The Vesta is a C-Store ship and will be an account unlock, so it's a win-win if you have several Fed alts.
The Wells can be attained from either the Lobi Store for 800 or from the Exchange. Be ready to pay good money for one. It is a fine ship.
Now, if you want to maintain some sort of individuality and not be a lemming, you still have some very fine Starfleet Science Ships. My choices out of the lot:
Fleet Science Vessel Retrofit (Fleet Nova) - Good SCI seating with LtCdr TAC. 15 Turn Rate. My Fed SCI currently uses this. With this, you have some space for TAC abilities, more than most SCI Vessels. Remember, Attack Pattern Omega (including Captain ability Attack Pattern Alpha) enhances ALL damage dealt by your ship, including your Sci abilities.
Fleet Research Science Vessel Retrofit (the bubble-headed one) - Robust Sci Vessel. LtCdr ENG along with good SCI BOFF seating. You can stuff EWP and EPTA in this ship. Have TBR+Voth DOFF to pull the targets to you instead, and lay down EWP The LtCdr ENG gives some opportunities for increasing survival or utility for the ship.
Fleet Nebula - Slower maneuverability than practically all other Fed SCI ships at endgame. However, it has more hullpoints than all other Sci Vessels that I'm aware of, as well as a hefty 1.43 shield mod. Lt Universal station gives some pretty decent options in customizing the build layout of the ship.
If you're part of a Tier 3 fleet and got 4 Fleet Modules and 20k Fleet Credits, I'd get the Fleet Science Vessel Retrofit. It's a little squishier than your DSSV, but makes up for it by adding in an Lt. Commander Tactical BOff (it also has the same BOff layout that the DSSV has) and is the best turn rate for a sci vessel (most hit up to 13, this does 15)
Since you're into drain builds, the Voth Palisade is the Dracula of sci ships. Heck, I haven't even added fleet gear my ship since it's a long grind, but I have flow caps at 305, and it drains very well.
I'm not in a fleet, a fact I unfortunately neglected to mention in my OP. Just don't feel I currently have enough regular free time to be an active member in a fleet. If I were, my list of ship candidates would likely be larger than the three I presented here. I'll keep the suggestions in mind should anything change, though.
Not sure if you're still looking, but I am going to throw in my support behind the Vesta as well. It's flexible and got everything and the kitchen sink. There are other ships that can pull off more super-specialized roles, but the Vesta will give you more mileage than any other science ship in the game.. just don't forget that it IS a science ship(you're better off with an actual escort if you want to fly the ship like one).
The only major weakness of the Vesta is its very fragile hull. Take care of that(I highly recommend the Assimilated 2-set), and you'll have an excellent ship that will see you through almost any situation.
I would not advise getting only ONE of a 3-pack...at some point you inevitably regret it. Get the full set or not at all. Not true at all. I only bought a Vesta and a Charal (one each from the Vesta and Andorian Escort packs), and have zero regrets. Well, maybe a tiny regret after seeing the glory of the 3-piece Kumari set, but "tiny regrets" don't cost an extra 2500Z
To the OP, It's all about figuring out what you want and then buying it. All of the Vesta line are fine, fine science ships, but if you're looking to drain, then the Sci-Vesta (Surveillance Explorer) is your ticket, because 5 Sci consoles makes for a lot of space to stuff Flow Capacitors, and putting some Elite Scorpions in your Hangar will make up for any damage shortfall brought on by the loss of a tac console.
Plus, the Sci-Vesta is the PRETTIEST vesta, bar none. The Aventine class is too pointy and the Rademaker class is too chunky (though I like the Rademaker's "shielded" hangar deck).
Currently flying the Vesta Multi-Mission Recon Explorer and find it a fantastic vessel using Gravity Well III, Tykens Rift II, Torpedo Spread III and a host of other abilities plus Elite Scorpion Fighters.
However having been casting my eye over the Tal Shiar Adapted Battle-Cruiser and note that it has a universal Cdr Spot. Has anyone built a Sci-slanted version of this as I think it could pack a punch with its 4-4 weapon slots plus sci abilities ?

The Mobius comes from the Lobi store. The Mobius is all escort, altho can be built science heavy thru use of its universal slots.
P.S. I love my Atrox! The Besta is a fine ship as well.
