No longer gaining points for promotion

aeroncaeronc Member Posts: 9 Arc User
Hello Fellow Trekies,

I have encountered a problem in the game that I think could be a bug and wanted to run it by the STO Community before contacting tech support. My current rank is Vice Admiral (50), but since attaining this rank, I am no longer accumulating skill or experience points. Since attaining this rank, I have also completed over a dozen missions including diplomatic ones, but nothing seems to have an effect on my progression in rank. I think I should also point out that I am a paying customer to STO, with a total of $150 US Dollars in Zen purchased for the game. Is my circumstance normal for STO or have I hit some kind of glitch?

Ian, you've run head long into the level cap.

technically, you are still earning points, but they are for other uses, such as boffs and reputation projects, which kinda/sorta take over the rank progression once you hit 50. getting tier 5 rep on all four on your first toon is a PITR if there ever was one
Everywhere I look, people are screaming about how bad Cryptic is.
    What's my position?
That people should know what they're screaming about!

My thanks to everyone for your responses. It has been a while since I played an MMO and it is now something I have to balance between a job and family. It has been more complicated by my 5 year old son who has also become a Start Trek addict and will not let me play unless he gets to be my First Officer :) Is there any advice you can offer on what type of ship I should have and how it should be equipped? I currently have an Oddessy Class and one of my frustrations with this game is that the opposing ships always seem to remain superior regardless of my rank or class of ship obtained.

    Thanks again,

    Graham

I don't know if you are tac/eng/sci or how you've spec'd your skill points, but I really like my (fleet) Avenger for both my eng and my tac captains.
What equipment are you running? That may be the issue vs using the Oddy.

Most content does scale to match your level, though exactly how varies here and there. However, now that you're at the level cap, there's still quite a bit of distance for your gear to go (not to mention pretty major stat gains through the reputation system passives), while enemies have stopped improving.

This might be a dumb question, cause iv been playing for some time now, and I should problly now this.

But how can I actually promote one of my boff's to first officer? All I see is the rank required for the type of ship and ground security. No drop down menu to assign a first officer?

    Fantastically difficult question to answer.

It depends on so many variables, not least your personal preference.

You're playing an Odyssey right now.

A nice big cruiser. Plenty of power, lots of weapon slots and something of a tendency towards engineering consoles and powers.

This sort of ship is geared towards defence (although, in skilled hands, it can be a DPS demon as well) and support.

However, you strike me as a thoughtful person.

Thus, may I suggest you check out the science ships available.

You're level 50, so if you're prepared to spend a little zen you have an embarrasment of riches to choose from.

The Vesta line is considered by many to be one of the best boats in the game. I don't own one though, so can't comment in detail.

However, if you don't want to spend any zen for now there is an excellent aternative.

On the exchange you will be able to obtain mirror universe ships for very little EC. 20k or a bit more.

These are basically the same ships you get for free at level 40, but with some of their attributes swapped around.

Thus the MU recon science ship is basically the same as the prime universe depp space science ship.

There are cruiser and escort equivilants.

Buy some of these and try them out. See what kind of ship suits you skills, temperament and playstyle.

Then go to the zen store and pick out something to suit......or even convert zen items to EC via the exchange and buy yourself a lockbox ship.

Finally, if you're not already a member of a fleet, I strongly recommend finding one.

There are a lot of excellent fleets out there, some asking more from their members from others, some more generous, relaxed or strict. Some have maxed out their starbases and holdings, most are still building.

I am contractually obligated to say that the fleet of which I am an Admiral would be an excellent choice.

Firstly it will open up a small amount of endgame content for you, but more importantly give you access to fleet ships, consoles, weapons and other services.

Fleet ships are the next best thing to lockbox ships.

Anyway, enjoy yourself and have fun.

this discussion reminds me of a mod for Diablo 2 that set the maximum level to 255. They had to drastically reduce the number of experience points you got(and a corresponding change to the number required for each level) otherwise there would be a stack overflow error in the amount of Xp needed to make level 255. :P

You can't. I believe you can set a Bridge Officer to First Officer in the Department Head section of the Duty Officer system, but that is not really promoting them to First Officer.

There was talk about upgrading Bridge Officers to playable Captains a few years back which would require you "sacrificing" special Duty Officers to train up a Bridge Officer to First Officer where they would gain some unique First Officer ability, then sacrifice more duty officers to get them to playable Captain, but I haven't heard anything recently about it from the devs. The current talk is promoting Bridge Officers to npc Captains so they can command your unused ships to go on missions similar to duty officer assignments and help you fight in combat when the level cap increase occurs to give us Admiral content, but that seems to be just player speculation. The only confirmations for that is the devs want us to become Full Admirals, allow us to control our own fleets, and allow us to use our ships, bridge officers, and crew in some way.

Only ships in Special Task Force missions should be higher level than you if you are at 50.

Near universal rules about NPCs in games: Their AIs are not smart so they get to 'cheat' to provide players with something close to a challenge and you're usually outnumbered too. ;)

search for oddy builds. esp the dragon and aux2bat builds. the oddy SHOULD be able to tank and beat any PVE ship outside the STFs well maybe excepting the borg command ship in the borg incursions.

Thunderfoot, I definitely agree. An unseen advantage of STO is that it has provided an opportunity for my son and I to share time together. Something that I hope will continue as he gets older and something I hope the developers will keep in the back of their minds as the game evolves.

Best wishes to you in 2014,

Thanks again to all that have replied, especially to rinkster for taking the time to break it down is such detail. There definitely seems to be a lot of complexities to the game, something I wish I had more time to research. My basic strategy up to this point has been upgrade ships and accept any tool or weapon with a higher Mach Number.

I am specked as a Science officer and currently everything on my ship is Mach X or XI.

The warp core has be high jacked from the Oblisk ship.

The fore weapons consist of photon / chromaton phasers, torpedoes and cannons

The Aft weapons are photon / cromaton phasors, mines and a tribalt torpedo.

When facing a superior foe, my strategy has been to fly in circles while laying mines and then baiting them to follow me through them.

My shields regenerate quickly but have no resilience. They especially take a pounding when confronting multiple targets or when hit by a dozen torpedoes at once(something I would like to have).

One of my previous ships came with the ability to Transwarp to any sector on the map. Would like to be able to do that again.

I don't mind buying zen and paying a fair price to the company has created the game. I just don't want to be stuck in a sales scheme that wastes my money and time.

Do to the limited time I have available, I have avoided joining any fleets. But based on what some of you have said, I probably should. What are your thoughts? I don't want to be an anchor that holds others on the team back.

Well, to take your last point first, let me tell you what would happenif you jined my fleet for instance.

We'd point you at our teamspeak server, which you would then be free to ignore forever.

One of us would probably show you around the fleet holdings, the facilities we develop to get good stuff.

Then, as you're a level 50, I'd promote you to where you can get fleet stuff, keep an eye on you for a week to ensure you're not just raiding our meagre resources, then........er.....well, then the point is for you to have fun. We will help if we can.

All fleets are different, some may require set donations, some require attendence at fleet meetings and so on.

    It's all good.

So, transwarp coil eh? That was an advanced heavy cruiser probably, the excelsior from the movies. There is a retrofit version available for 2000 zen. It's a decent cruiser, good turn for such a big boat and somewhat more tactical than most cruisers.

The fleet version, available from tier 3 fleet shipyards, is a particulary nice boat.

It should also be noted you can buy consumable transwarp coils from the lobi store, although most would consider it a silly use of lobi.

    So, ship building.

While there are plenty of people, especially the PVP specialists, who can tell you in excruciating detail how to build a boat, I'll essay the quick and dirty version.

Start with the space set; shields, defelctor and impulse engines.

It's good to get matched space sets, they often come with useful synergies or powers.

There are two you can get for free by merely doing story missions.

The JemH'dar set and the Breen set.

Both aren't awful, the Jemmie set is very good on Jemmie ships.

All other space sets require you working up one or more of the reputation trees. In those tracks you will find a plethora of awesome space sets.

Then lets look at the warp core.

Theres nothing wrong with the Obelisk one. It favours science slightly with its aux power bonus.

However, you can get better ones from a fleet, either from the dilithium kine or the new spire holdings.

    Weapons.

Conventional wisdom suggests that when it comes to weapons the kiss principle is a good idea.

Because weapon consoles usually only buff either one type of energy or one energy weapon type, its good to use one energy type and to keep weapon types either beams or cannons.

Reason is, this way they get the maximum benefit of any tactical consoles you slot, and you can also get the most out of boff powers like beam fire at will or cannon rapid fire.

A standard loadout for a cruiser might be a torpedo and three beams forward, and a mine layer and three beams aft.

Beams are good on a cruiser because their large arc of fire allows you to mitigate the turn speed, and also cruisers are well suited to dealing with the power drain.

    Consoles.

How many tactical slots do you have? Fill them with consoles that buff your energy weapon type. So, if you have three slots and run plasma, thats three plasma infusers. Best mark and quality you can afford.

Your science and engineering slots are where you put everything else. As a cruiser you might want to look at a couple of specific engineering consoles.

RCS accelerators improve your turn rate. Neutronium armour gives you resistence to all energy weapon types, as well as kinetic energy.

If only there were consoles that combined these two things.....and, oh look, there is.

    Yup, its a fleet console.

    tl:dr

Fleets are where you get the vast majority of the good stuff, dont worry though, its not hard to find a decent fleet.

Thinking about ship builds, once you're au fait with the basics, can make a huge difference to performance.

    Rule one is have fun.

    Absolutely true.

Mind, I really ought to also point out that a number of high level fleets do allow access to their holdings for non fleet members to obtain kit.

However, you'd still need fleet credit to buy things, so a home fleet somewhere is essential.

    Hi everyone,

I want to thank you all for taking the time to help me with my problem. I have taken your advice and joined a fleet(The Promethean Alliance). I am still working towards fleet credits, but hoping I can soon obtain shields or something that will give me a little more stamina in a fight.

    Best wishes to you all,
