Would You Use an Asset Coordinates Database?

kirksplatkirksplat Member Posts: 0 Arc User
So we've been debating about a possible addition to Starbase UGC. It would require a lot of work, and it would be good to know beforehand if lots of Foundry authors would use it.

If you've spent much time building sets, you know the routine of moving in and out of preview mode in order to line up two walls or simply put a glass at the perfect y value so that it is sitting on a specific table.

This can be time-consuming. If there was a list or a database that contained common sets of figures for lining up walls, etc., then would you alt tab out of the Foundry to the list, in order to save yourself time?

For example, the TOS gated mesh prop seamlessly fits with itself by adding 5.34 to the X or Z factor. So if your first prop is on the 300 spot, you could visit the list, write down 5.34, grab a calculator if you need to, and do the math to instantly know that your second prop should be at 305.34.

The biggest problem is that some props have a weird center point that isn't really center so the addition and subtraction might need to be tweaked depending if you're moving left, right, up, or down. Nevertheless, it would probably work for most props.

Creating this list would be a lot of work, but I know that I'd use it often instead of previewing the map 15 times to know that a specific wall needs exactly 12.25 to line up with a second version of itself. Would you use it?

Does this seem like a good idea? Any volunteers willing to help?

For things like the TOS grate, which don't show a top-down model on the 2D map and are very hard to line up, this would indeed be very useful.

I would use it for all kinds of stuff, even if it has the icons. For example, the flat wall console that everyone puts on a wall. If we had a list for the prop that included exact coordinate difference between the panel and each type of wall (to make it perfectly stuck on the wall with no small gaps), then that would be useful to reference.

Even with the icons, I find myself constantly adjusting the coordinates after like 5 or 6 previews. Plus, a lot of those icons are inexact.

Can even include things like the proper coordinates to make NPCs sit in chairs on bridges or other maps. I know we had a thread going on that a long time ago, I'm sure we can dig that up.

Another big thing: Where to put the non-opening door for ready room scenes.

Another suggestion: A public costumes exchange.

I support this endeavor. Any asset supporting foundry authors is a great thing.

Holy cow yes. Ground maps are so meticulous.

I assume this could also be used for custom constructs?

This idea thoroughly ROCKS! This girl Trekkie approves!

Just a thought, it would be cool if there was also an imbedded foot to meters calculator on the page, for figuring the difference between the coordinates that the /loc command gives us and current metric coordinates. (Not that it's hard to pull up the calculator, I'm just saying it would be easier. OR even a list of common coordinate equivalents!

    Example:

    /loc 1 = 0.3048 in editor

    /loc 2 = 0.6096 in editor

    /loc 3 = 0.9144 in editor

OR if we could have a coder come up with a three field calculator, it could translate the WHOLE COORDINATES at ONCE! (Which would be awesome!)

Actually, I think someone who's decent at math might be able to use this to make the aforementioned dream calculator for coordinates...

Some time ago I made an app that automatically and immediatelly converted the camera coordinates to usable metric values. It also calculated Y offset for absolute reference. Also had a feature to note multiple objects and adjust locations according to freecam movement.

I think this would be very useful. However, my question is with the current state of the Foundry, does anyone really want to put in a lot of work helping support a tool that doesn't even appear to be supported by the actual developers?
