Newb wanting to make ship better

So, I'm a newb, and I feel that my ship is very fragile, even with defense posture and defense command active. I also feel that I just kinda mod-podged parts together. Can anyone give me advice on how to properly make and maintain a high-caliber ship from level 29 (you can start with level 30; I'll be getting a new ship then anyways) to level 50?

Also, I need reccomendation on what Federation ship is best for tanking at level 30 onwards so I know what ship to buy.

Let us start with: What ship?
What class are you, tac, sci, eng?

Engineering, and my current ship is a heavy cruiser. I'm about to reach level 30, which should mean a new ship.

that is a very hard question to answer. In order for it to be answered a few questions must be asked:
    1. What ship are you looking to fly at 50?
    2. Do you want to be more offensive, defensive or a mix of both?
    3. How do you like to play?

An answer to those will help others suggest a ship and bridge officer setup. It will also help us give you ideas of how to gear.

this game has no PVE content that requires a tank
you are best off by getting an escort ship to do the grinding to level 50 and past lvl 50. dmg is king basically.
any combination of captain career and ship is valid, but for PVE and grinding content, escorts or destroyers are simply the best choice. (commander tactical station and an above 10 turnrate)

one particular power is mandatory...tactical team 1. then there is Emergency power to shields, hazard emitters, transfer shield strength...the "triumvirat" of survival, you need them always, period.

if you go sci vessel or cruiser too early in your career, you will loose interest in the game, because progression is slow.
    Go pro or go home

A good habit to get into early is EPTx (Emergency Power To X) cycling. They last 30 seconds and share a 15 second cooldown, so you can pick up Emergency Power To Weapons (EPTW) and Emergency Power To Shields (EPTS), get two copies of each (at endgame there are ways to do it with just one copy), then activate one or the other every 15 seconds to have both always active. Those powers combined give you between 40 and 60 extra energy (depending on your skill tree), a good weapon damage bonus (especially helping to counter the heavy drain of lots of beam arrays), a regular shield heal, and most importantly a big shield damage reduction. Setting up something like 2 EPTW1 and 2 EPTS2 is a good starting point and is generally considered Cruisers 101.

Just remember, if you make your ship a Jack of all trades, it will be the master of none.
You should outfit your ship differently for what ever you are doing in the game. Being Romulan I constantly cloak and swap consoles (After I'm out of red alert) for different things.

Personally, my STF consoles are different from my PvP or PvE. Well, PvE doesn't really count (Unless Elite) you can basically fly naked with one gun. lol

By tank, I mean mostly take a lot of damage before dying, even if it means sacrificing some weapon power. I'm not familiar with the level 50 ships; I DO know I want something massive. I also intend to be very PvP-oriented at level 50, both in space and on ground.

Healing is my specialty on other games, with tanking a close second; I decided I wanted my main to be a tank. As I said, I am Engineering.
