If you want to melee on the ground, Vulcans, Klingons, and Caitians are quite good. Aliens offer a lot of choice but you miss out on species bonuses.

I personally wouldn't let space choices dictate your decision that hard. If all you care about is space, play an Alien, Borg (if you're a lifer), or Human.

It probably depends a lot on whether you mean space or ground.

TBH I'm not really an expert in that regard but for example Andorian traits look pretty good to me if you're looking to do some serious damage on the ground.

You can take a look at the available races here:

My preference would be either a rigellian or vulcan

Rigellians get a innate clickable heal
Vulcans can have mind meld trait (turns an enemy into an ally for a short time)

Otherwise anything is fine really, most species traits are nothing special

Though caitans CAN get the mega jump, but only if your willing to pay for it
[Combat (Self)] Your Bite deals 2378 (1475) Physical Damage(Critical) to Spawnmother.

For ground its Caitian and Vulcan, for space it doesn't really matter now since you can select so many space traits.

    A KDF Romulan

!00% more firepower in space over any Fed
you can claim and fly level 40 and down Fed ships if you claim them befoe level 50

make millions every week and cap dilithium daily doing fast easy marauder missions

The most superior level 50 ships in the game

doesnt matter really if you must pick a fed they all are poor game wise verses kdf and romulans you will have a weaker character and the worst ships in the game as well as poor elite space weapons

Feds do have Better clothing options :)
    And the best space tanks
    Jellico....Engineer ground.....Da'val Romulan space Sci
Saphire.. Science ground......Ko'el Romulan space Tac
    Leva........Tactical ground.....Koj Romulan space Eng

JJ-Verse will never be Canon or considered Lore...It will always be JJ-Verse

Whatever race you always wanted to be in Star Trek if you could choose is the best race for you. Don't get hung up on traits, at least not Fed side. (if we were talking kdf pirate or romulan operative maybe it would be different) But on the Fed side, play as what you want and not what you think is tactically the superior race.

Andorian female. Because we need more hot blue chicks running around making space look good.

I got me one of those for my new toon

as for the thread, Joined Trills do well for any class - their innate resist's and health recovery help keep you alive on the ground longer then most, and their space bonus' are even better then the lib borg captain (which I also have)

What I use and recommend for my toons and my Boffs (all factions):

Federation: Human for the leadership trait (Increases Subsystem Repair and Hull Regen Rate in Space)

KDF: Nausicaan for the pirate trait (+2% all damage in space)

Romulan: Romulan for the Subterfuge trait (+Stealth while Cloaking, Bonus damage when exiting Cloak) and the Covert Operative selectable trait (in space +1.5% Critical Chance, +3.8% Critical Severity, +10% Power Recharge Speed for Cloaking)

The only time I use anything different is just for Roleplay or fun.

On the federation side I have a custom-made (alien) Cardassian toon with all Cardassian Boffs (female science and engineering, male tactical).

On the KDF I have an Orion male with an all Orion female crew for my own amusement and occasional Roleplay. Then there's the constant hilarity I get when on Nimbus or the Dyson sphere and see other players drop what they were doing just to stare at my Boffs. The double-takes are exceptionally funny.

    It times out.

For all around Human is good in ground and space.

Do you mean a fed captain or bridge officer?

For captains, Trill and Liberated Borg are generally consider the best, although the former is a c-store unlock and the later is only available to life-time subscribers. Aliens are nice because you get extra flexibility with their traits, Humans have an innate bonus to ship repair which is useful in space combat, and Bolians and Benzites (and Aliens) have access to the "efficient captain" trait which is also decent for space combat.

For bridge officers, the best option for tacs, regardless of faction, is undoubtably Romulans with the Superior Romulan Operative trait. This gives you a major boost in the critical chance and critical damage done by your ship. If you're looking for a bridge officer exclusively for your away team, the Breen you earn from running the mission "Cold Storage" during feature episode reruns is the probably best, and if you can't get him, the Jem'hadar from the running mission "Facility 4028" at any time is arguably just as good.

STOwiki's list of player races. Bookmark it now. I'll wait.

If you're minmaxing, Fedside it's human (boosts to ship healing), liberated Borg (boost to warp core efficiency, meaning increased power levels; friend of mine has a Lib Borg who is next to indestructible in this build), or joined Trill (boosts to several space skills). They're the only ones who get unique space traits.

But minmaxing's no fun for me. I'm not interested in uber-tier PVP (friendly matches with fleetmates are fun, though), and my build works fine for ESTFs. My Fed's a Bajoran with two Andorians, a Trill, a Bajoran, a human, and an alien (I call him a Pe'khdar). My team in all their glory.

For space Human or maybe Saurian. On the ground, a Vulcan with a Lirpa does fun things to people.

Yummeh! Did you commission that artwork, or do it yourself? Either way it's gorgeous and frame-worthy. And while it's only my opinion, I personally think Orions have nothing on Andorians as far as beauty and attractiveness go. Hell, I'd put them third behind Trill as well. Maybe green just isn't my color.

wow I hate when you make a long reply, then it doesn't actually reply.... short answer, That pic was actually an accident, I sit the toon in high traffic areas and watch people when I afk, I bumped the mouse and then the print screen button (among others) with my elbow.

I only play chick toons in games, they ARE more fun to look at. I did a thread a while ago that has pics of all my other toons - http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=790421

Andorians used to have Fury which was awesome, the equivalent to 'Go Down Fighting' on the ground. You can still find BOffs with this trait. With the trait revamp this was made into the general 'Andorian' trait. Probably my favorite.

Rigelians have Spirit Walk which is good +Res for tacs. Klingons have Honorable Warrior which is good for damage. Bajorans have their general trait plus Soldier. Pakleds also have Soldier. Caitians have Pounce or built-in 'Lunge' if you want to drop the Zen.

Those are my favs but it's really up to the player. You can never go wrong with Humans either. ;)

The Rigelian spirit walk does seem col, but they are full on fugly..Bajorans are closer to my cup of tea, but don't seem all that note worthy compared to others.
