Hi all
I was thinking, what is going on with the Deferi in STO? The devs get fans of the franchise repeatedly upset because they use species/ships/whatever from Star Trek in a misrepresented manner, the latest example are the Voth which even got a whole season dedicated to them despite the fact we know almost nothing about them and as such, most of it is made up by Cryptic anyway.
But they already have a unique species and culture in STO, the Deferi. But to this day they only serve as being "Deferis in distress" for the players since they are essentially unable to defend or act for themselves in any way shape or form and are constantly harassed by the dangers of the universe. But I have to say, in principle I really don't hate them as much as other players - if only they hadn't been completely dropped.
What about advancing the Deferi? All that time of collaboration with the Federation and the Klingons should have lead them to at least being able to defend themselves. So why not let them field a brand new flagship that joins the line of the Enterprise, BortasQu and ... erm... the Romulan one
and make them a part of our adventures again, maybe even being the second playable "sub-faction"?
I'm imaging something like this: The Deferi with help from the other powers were able to constructt their own flagship. The S.S.D Equipoise, a large Star Cruiser that incorporates technology from both worlds, loosely based on the Deferi ship designs we know (the freighters and frigates). It could sport unique disrupting tetryon weapons (sponsored by the KDF) like turrets, a tripple beam bank as a unique heavy forward weapon, tetryon-based torpedoes (anti-shield torps or disable subsystem EMP torps) and be science oriented in it's overall layout while having some kind of seperation gimmick (sponsored by Starfleet).
Defera's ground troops could profit from intensive Klingon training resulting in Deferi guardians, troops equally versed in ranged combat (disrupting tetryon?) and close combat (a new kind of sword or halberd?) including sets for players to acquire and wear.
I personally would like to see Defera's passive state ended. We persuaded them in the DS9 story arc that in order to remain the balance it is necessary to act. Their world is invaded by Borg and Breen and the Iconians or Tholians wouldn't stop for Defera as well.

Especially their frigates.
Parallels: my second mission for Fed aligned Romulans.
True, though it has some "organic" touch to them and I feel it could be improved.
Regarding their characteristics, Daniel Stahl once stated that their design process was influenced by the Capellans from TOS: Friday's child. Which was actually a non space-faring, but highly specialized tribal warrior culture. There is potential for them to expand on.
