I do too, but so many people cried about it that Dan doesn't talk about much of anything that's not set in stone anymore. You're more likely to get something insightful from Al these days.
So the Alpha Quadrant powers catched up in the last 30 years.
You know... to the 20 million year old, hyper-advanced civilization of dinosaurs.
I know that especially the Federation advances far quicker then most other species anticipate, but are the Voth really that incompetent?
There would be a solution to that problem.
In some Doff missions, it's even hinted at, but not fully developed.
The Dyson Sphere, technologically en par with the Voth and in some fields even superior, blocks higher functions of Voth technology.
Functions our Alliance doesn't even have, or can dream of having.
So we stand a chance against the Voth in the Sphere. And only there.
Outside, they would blast us to pieces.
Or not even that. They would just render our technology uselus by deactivating it remotely.
Some "Intercept Voth communication" missions in the Doff system say just that.
Sphere interference makes it possible for the allies to intercept Voth subspace radio, which would otherwise be outside of our possibilities to do.
Just expand upon that, and the "technological gap" problem is solved by plot device.
Better then the "we catched up" explanation.
Of course the Voth are slowed down by Doctrine. But 20 million years of interstellar history are too damn much to explain away with orthodox ideology.
That doesn explain away a thousand years of standstill. Or then thousand.
Or a hundred thousand for Gods sake.
But millions? Nope... not gonna eat that one.
And of course, on top of that, every SF franchise knows some "plateau" technology, which is much harder to surpass than reaching it. MAybe we are already close to the top of what is physically possible in the Star Trek Universe, no matter how much farther you develop.
That would make it even more boring now, wouldn't it?
Star Trek is about advancement. Reaching the plateau now is unnecessary and, well, boring.
As mentioend above, there is a perfectly fine reason why we could be able to fight the Voth within the Sphere and that without destroying their technological supremacy.
I also find it hard to believe that the Feds are on par with the Voth, but also there is something that we must take in consideration: all things in the Universe respect the Gaus curve. So even an advanced civilization as the Voth, they will still be the subject to this up and down, so maybe, the Voth civilization has begun to crash. Maybe they are trying to use the Dyson sphere to avoid this downfall, bla bla bla..........
But more important: in the end this is a SF game, so do not expect that all things here have a logic ( like my captain flying a D'Kora with my Reman, Romulan, Klingon, Liberated Borg, Breen and other boffs ).

It's a bit hard to let everything fall under "suspension of disbelief"...

I disagree. A scify game can bend or break the laws of physics and science but it should still be based on logic.
I am still not over the missed opportunity to find and explore a strange and alien, massive thing like the Dyson Sphere....
Instead we just get thrown in there when the exploring is already done and we get to business: shooting Voth.
^^ this. When I first entered the Sphere I was amazed that we already have a major base of operations there with multiple outposts and a massive minefield. I expected things to maybe build up over time or the zone advance with the story but like you say we're just chucked in there and told to go pew pew some Voth.
Very short interview, at least I got a fee Bajoran uniform out of it .

The Voth are not incompetent. Their society has stagnated due to Doctorine. That philosophy has permeated its way into their entire way of life and their scientific institutions. How can you advance if you fear that anything new that you discover will make you a target for the state to label an opponent of Doctorine.
Also, it is quite easily imaginable that at some point advancement slows down for advanced civilizations. At some point there isnt that much more to really be able to do.

The entire Voth episode was a creative retelling of Galileo's trial. If humans can get past religious dogma, why can't others? If they are not incompetent, then we are special. And that is just as bad.

I haven't paid nearly enough attention to what the doff missions say, but this works for me. The Voth are still superior (by far), but they are highly limited in the sphere.
As much as I hate to say that, this could even help to explain the 'dinosaurs with frakking lasers on their heads' nonsense. A bit. A very small bit...
TOIVA, Toi Vaxx, Toia Vix, Toveg, T'vritha, To Vrax: Bring in the Allegiance class. Toi'Va, Ti'vath, Toivia, Ty'Vris, Tia Vex, Toi'Virth: Add Tier 6 KDF Carrier and Raider. Tae'Va, T'Vaya, To'Var, Tevra, T'Vira, To'Vrak: Give us Asylums for Romulans.

Exactly.
Also... come on... 20. MILLION. Years.
Even if the Federation progresses a hundred times faster, the Voth should be ahead of it by 20 000 years.
At the very, very least the Voth should be able to do what the Federation does in the 29th or 31st century. Then the Feds would even progress more then two thousand times faster.
30 years to catch up with the Voth? Come on. Oh please, seriously. COME ON.
You know what that means? The Feds progress over 650 thousand times faster then the Voth.
I don't want to play a Mary Sue of that magnitude!
I like the "the Dyson Sphere interfers with the higher functions of Voth tech" explanation better then making them so ridiculously slow in their advancement.
That doesn't mean I do not aknowledge Doctrine as a factor which slows them down essentially.
Doctrine is perhaps why they aren't beings of pure energy yet.
My favorite part was how the blogger started the article by telling us how different and off-the-wall his questions were going to be, as opposed to all the other bloggers that got to interview Dan Stahl.
First question: "So, what's new with Season 8?"
LOL
Other great "different and unique" questions included "What's it like to have players always asking for new things?" and "Did you meet Worf when he was in your office?"

What a rebel this blogger is!
lo and to make it worse the interview has to be a month out of date. so makes it even more pointless. we have people completing t4 dyson reputation and working towards t5 to put it in perspective of how far behind the interview comes across. is this interview meant to be new? fresh? informative? for current players? or is it realised in hope of either brining people back the game or gaining new players?
as said before there is nothing there that's not in dev blogs these days.
in fact dan should have just quoted the dev blog number as answers.
The only important question right now is... was that Season 8 already?
Are we finished with the entire Voth/Dyson Sphere storyline?
If so, I can't overstate how wasted the opportunity was... I mean, don't get me wrong.
I won't hate on the new content in itself. I love, LOVE the battlezone (minus the leechers).
But... man, that should only be the core of Season 8, not all of it.
Quite a waste of time from everyones' perspective...

At least this time he didn't get our hopes up with stuff that wasn't gonna happen.
I kinda miss that actually.

Making everyone else incompetent to make the protagonist look good is the sign of a mediocre storyteller. Its one of the reasons why I dislike TOS.
Another sign of a mediocre storyteller is the overused "we are special" trope. Which, again, is one of the reasons why I dislike TOS.
That would make it even more boring now, wouldn't it?

Well to be honest, the dev blongs are the only place you will find story from season 8
