Tricobalt Torpedo

rweningerrweninger Member Posts: 0 Arc User
Just a simple question!

Are tricobalt Torpedos worth trying them?

My personal point of view is, that they are too slow and too long CD. Only a Lt. Cmdr. Torpedo High Yield made them at least a bit of fun - for me.

What are your thoughts on them?

Well it is your choise but the nerved the damage off the tricobalt torpedo so much it is hardly is worth while trying out. To be honest I switched to fleet plasma torpedo it's doing far better damage than Tri Cobalts.

For me I do use Quantum Torpedoes primary. I only used Tricobalts before they nerved them to death.

Just tried them a few days ago. It is sad. I am OK with the current damage output as long as the CD would be at least 50% lower and the traveling speed at least 20% - 33% faster.

I cant remember that those Torps were THAT slow in VOY: Caretaker! :-)

I like to use then with a Torpedo Spread after a Gravity Well - bunch them up and (if it works) each torpedo damages all of them with AOE, and use a Beam Fire at Will or Cannon Scatter Volley to take the shields down while the torpedoes are in flight. Pets can also useful to draw fire away from the torpedoes.

Personally I love the TCD. (Tricobalt Device) With HY2 or 3 it does ludicrous damage to hull, and decent damage to shields of NPCs. I have watched as my TCDs have crit' for well over 70k damage on things like the Borg Tactical Cube at the end of Conduit Elite.

The downside is yes, they are slow.. and yes, they are easy to shoot down. The majority of NPCs however usually don't bother with shooting pets and projectiles unless they do not have a player in range to grab their attention. I use the Dyson gravitorp now, but before that it was TCD all the way.

Fly in close, hit your HY and launch your mini WMD. If you get one that is [CrtH]x2 [CrtD] even better. They are horrible for rapid fire and Tholians/Voth due to their long cooldown and those NPCs spamming Fire at Will. They are outstanding for Omega STFs and can work just as well on a ship that can maneuver against Tholians and Voth.

If your a torp person, and want a 'nuke' to drop on partially damaged and debuffed targets.. the Tricobalt torp is the weapon for you.

As for Plasma torpedoes, I have had mixed results from them. IMHO without their proc, Plasma torps would be in the bargain bin next to the Refracting Tetryon beams and non fleet Resilient shields. That's just my opinion though.

For me, I had more fun in nuking the enemy with Tric Mines. If 1 cirts, then every crits. This makes up to 200000 or more damage. :-)

Blowing up a Gate with active Generators isnt possible anymore though!

Still, I think compared to newer Torpedoes and Quantum Torps, that the Tricobalt is a bit sub par!

I use them on my t'varo torpedo sub, and also on a BOP that is special built to hold the target in place. HY tric hits really hard (when they hit), and the proc is helpful for shooting the target with guns if the target survived. They are about in the same league as some other "specialty" torps that require supporting builds and are not practical as "normal" torpedoes.

I will definately try this. Could you tell me your ship configuration in detail?

I use this technique on a couple, the best is:

    Multi-Mission Surveillance Explorer:

    3x Aux Phasers

Romulan Deflector (for +39.4 Grav and +26.2 SSD)
Adapted MACO Engines (for 2 pc torpedo bonus)
Obelisk Warp Core (for aux power)
    Adapted MACO Shields (for shields)

Tricobalt Torpedo Launcer Mk XII [dmg]x3 (may update sometime to fleet)
    Nukara Mines
Romulan Hyper-Plasma Torpedos (for set bonus and extra damage)

Enhance Neutronium Alloy Mk XII [+Turn]
    Assimilated Module

2* Purple Graviton Generators +30% and +28% (will upgrade when Diplomacy gets to T3)
    Blue Field Generator Mk XI
Zero-Point Energy Conduit (for +17.2 Grav Gen, power crits & set)
Tachyokinetic Converter (for Criticals and turn)

2* Phaser Relays both +28% (will upgrade when Research gets to T3)
    TDC Subspace Infuser +30% ("")

    Elite Scorpoin Fighters

    Boffs:
    Lt. Com Uni: (Tac): TT1, CSV1, TS3
    Ens Uni: (Eng): EPTS1
    Lt Tac: TT1, CSV 1
    Lt Eng: EPTS1, ET1
    Cmd Sci: PH1, HE2, PS1, GW3

    Doffs:
    Purple Conn Officer (Evasive Maneuvers)
Blue Deflection Officers (will upgrade sometime)
    Purple Gravimetric Scientist
    Purple Photonic Studies Scientist

I run at maximum Aux power all the time with shields next, and with no energy weapons in the rear I never have to worry about weapon power. The Photonic shockwave is for dealing with pets and I found out that having a second Gravity Well was seldom necessary (and with better Deflection Officers, even more so).

    I use two attack methods:

1: Fire everything out the front, then do a 180 degree turn (usually with Evasive Maneuvers) firing TS3 and the Tricobalts, followed by the Romulan Torpedoes, then another 180 degree and keep firing till it goes quiet.

2:Fire everything out the front, hit Evasive Maneuvers, fly through the middle of the group, dropping the Nukara Mines and the Photonic Shockwave in the middle, wait till safe range and fire the Tricobalt torpedo spread followed by the Romulan Torpedos. turn and fire till it all goes quiet. Note, the shockwave will spread the targets out, but the Gravity Well will pull then all back before the Tricobalts hit.

Note, this is for PvE, I doubt it would work in PvE (more than once anyway). Neither is this a top build, just what I have at the moment. I used to run with 4 Graviton Generators, but have found 2 to be good enough under most circumstance.

I also have a Klingon Sci in an Obelisk Carrier who used Gravity Well 1 and Torpedo Spread 1, not as powerful but still works.

    Hope that helps.
