Starfleet Academy Lecture

Greetings STO,
After spending so much time at Starfleet Academy, either in cadet attire, or instructor color variants, I realize... there is very little to the location beyond a simple social zone. Has anyone toyed with the idea of hosting a class there? Or how about something simpler, like a lecture/discussion?

I have toyed with this idea after finding myself either having to defend the moon landings from people who call it a hoax, or fill in the blanks for people who just don't know anything about it. On both accounts, I find the only mission anyone can even name is the moon landing itself, and maybe Apollo 13. The space program is too important to be just forgotten like that.

Therefore, I am working on the idea of hosting a period of lectures at Starfleet Academy, detailing the space program (not just US), from the 1950's with Sputnik and the "Mercury 7", through Vostok, Gemini, Voskhod, through Apollo and the moon landings, and the Soviet Soyuz, possibly concluding with the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project of 1975 (the REAL Apollo 18). Furthermore, as a DJ on MMO Radio, I might do it over the air, instead of constant never-ending text which takes forever to get through.

Anyways, getting that out there, haven't set a date yet, as I am still compiling information... I'm to about 1961 at this point. Was curious what people think, and if anyone is interested in attending.

    Interesting and noble idea!

If its on the air then attendance at Starfleet Academy would not be required I presume ... but it may be more immersive from a certain point of view.

    Good luck with the project!

Well, immersion is the primary point. While being tunned in would be the main thing, its about getting together in a social group. And furthermore, with everyone at the same location, it adds the ability for them to ask questions and for me to respond to them directly, for all to see and/or hear.

I'm not the "shut up, I'm talking" type :P

    PROGRESS:

The Dream of Space ((Introduction) 1955 - 1958)
Manned Spaceflight and the Mercury Seven (1958 - 1961)
    First Man in Space (1961)

    In-Depth Research Completed:
    (USSR) Vostok (1961 - 1963)
    (USA) Mercury (1961 - 1963)
    (USSR) Voskhod (1964 - 1965)

    Research in Progress:
    (USA) Gemini (1964 - 1966)
    (USA) "Apollo 1" Fire (1967)

May use Apollo-Soyuz as the finale, as it signifies a sort of finale to the "space race" in a joint mission of cooperation.

    Thanks ^_^

I have even gone so far as to speak with the local Community College and pass along the idea of a "History of Spaceflight" course to the curriculum. I know i wouldn't be able to teach it, as I don't have a degree in that regard. But if such a course could even get made, that would be enough for me.

How does this sound, Instead of me taking Caitian Picard to ESD for Picard day, Ill go to Star Fleet Academy with that toon, and answer questions for players in local chat, like ive offered in these forums. Maybe even tell stories to those interested. Let me know if you think this is a better idea?

The Academy is a place of learning, and I would very much like to see more learning going on. And, btw, my lecture idea is not any kind of exclusive thing for me. The subject matter, I would ask that you leave to me, as I have been working very hard on it. However, if you wish to host your own lectures on any other subjects, feel free to do so ^_^

Its Picard day, im currently in instance 1 of Star Fleet academy telling tales of my adventures, answering questions and even giving new students the finer points of how to properly use a party popper.

My first leacture will be on my first mission aboard the Enterprise as its Caitian, the Meow Point Station mission, and our first encounter with Q cat. Questions will be answered afterwards.

I had already been on for an hour before I advertised my instance and that i was on...but i counted 8 people listening, and was asked over a dozen questions, but only one was about my toons RP mission. the rest was about the usual fun cat stuff. Im about to go back to the Academy in a minute to tell another tale and answer more for if you wanna come. Ill be in instance 1 again by the benches viewing the bridge. =^.^=

Not as big of turn out this time, only 3 people dropped by, but a member from Nova fleet did remember to perform the Picard manuver and I did buy them a drink as promised in the Picard Day thread! :D

Its fun when others like to play along, I enjoy meeting people like I did today. There are many who never take the time to smell the flowers, but i think its more important then to just run around form one task to the next, RL is already bad for that. If you see a chance to take a moment and enjoy something more then grinding, you may see why areas like Star Fleet Academy and Club 47 was made.

    hi keiichi2032,

I too like your idea, and think it would make good use of the space we have been blessed with. As a former academy cadet, I`d like to think I can continue to learn about things that happened before us (sorry for the RP moment)!

This is an excellent idea! Similar to all the lecture theaters that sprang up in "Second Life".

    I'll be there, timezones permitting.

P.S.> Has anyone noticed the Gingerbread mission is bugged?
