CD doesnt reset while logging off???

matrix0matrix0 Member Posts: 261 Arc User
I just noticed that cd didn't reset while I was off line. I've never notice it before because I normally logon daily and play for a few hours. However, I wasn't playing for awhile and when logging back, buff/skills with long CD such as calling freighter, tribble buff or class skills didn't reset.

Kinda baka don't you think? Skills CD timer should continue to count down while we were offline imo.

Time Gating players is a gameplay feature in STO. To make it seem like there's something worthwhile that keeps you "busy."

Not only that, but ground and space CDs stop when you switch to the opposite type map.

    That's right,
If you use a space skill like "Evasive Maneuvers" then enter DS9, when you come out the cooldown picks up where it leaves off.

And similarly, when you use one of the special tribbles, the 1 hour countdown only ticks down while your character spends time in that zone.

Welcome to the way things have worked since day one of STO. This is not a F2P thing, this is an always has been thing.

Not true. The space/ground thing wasn't always the case, though it was implemented very early on (for whatever reason... personally I think it's just a bug that's never been dealt with). I also think ability cooldowns used to continue to countdown after you logged out (though on this I'm not 100%) considering that my Transwarp was available when logging back in, and I generally used it right before logging out to sell off garbage (this, of course, was back when the Transwarp cooldown was actually significant).

Maybe, but it has been this way for a long, long time. I was just mostly pointing out that its nothing sinister, or time gating about it (as one poster suggested). Its just one of those weird and quirky things that's been around for years.

    This is true.

Wish to God they'd fix it though. It's stupid and annoying. They've got the whole "When the cat's away, the mice will play!" thing going on. "Captain's off the ship? PARTY IN ENGINEERING! Just let that warp core sit, everyone can finishing realigning the coils and whatnot when he gets back!" I feel like my entire crew needs to either be court martialed or blown out an airlock (depending on faction...).

It's made doubly aggravating when you look at how little the reward tribbles give out. That tiny amount, yet they don't cooldown in space or when you log off? It's not even really worth wasting the inventory space on them when it's all taken into consideration.

This is a safety to balance gameplay. Its a pain at times, but its better than the logging spam of people resetting their abilities.

Apologies beforehand for the rather long post, but I feel very strongly about this - it is a very important topic, but very few ppl seem to think so.

I agree with the OP on this one. Can we please have some feedback from the devs as to why these cooldowns were designed like this?? It is so frustrating having your CDs stop ticking over when you're offline, on another character or in a different map type (ie space skill CDs stop when you're on ground and vice versa). In every other MMO I've played cooldowns for everything continue to tick over irrespective whether you're offline or logged in on a different character.

I dont meant to sound harsh here, but I really think its stupid that your gravity well for example stops ticking it's cooldown while you are moved to a ground part of a mission. It makes no logical sense whatsoever, and is completely counter productive.

Things like transwarp and trade freighter are meant to be a convenience to players - a bit of a time saving for when you reach VA rank - but as they currently are they are a hinderance and an annoyance more than anything.

There is nothing more frustrating than being in a far out nebula and not be able to pick up a doff mission for example because I discover I need to buy something for it off the exchange, and the trade freighter is somehow still on cooldown after 3 days due to me spending most of my time either on ground missions or on other characters.

Or wanting to join fleetmates in a mission or event, hopping over to the character you want to join them with and wanting to transwarp to them (eg Defera), only to find - oh wtf?, my transwarp is still on cooldown from 2 days ago. "Sorry guys, give me 5 minutes while I chug my way there because my stupid TW is still on cooldown"

Tribbles are the same story, as someone mentioned in a previous post - the cooldown on using the tribble stops ticking over when you leave ground, BUT the buff you get from the tribble doesnt. How does that make any sense? OK, this may be a 'petty' thing, but take one of the special tribbles, say the Dyson tribble for e.g. - Cryptic says very clearly "gain 1 dyson mark every hour for petting the tribble' but in reality its not the case, who spends their entire game play on the ground? In reality you might be lucky to get 2 or 3 in a 24 hour period.

Again, my aplogies for the lengthy post, and thanks for reading through it :)

Actually, dev's have commented on cool downs over the years quite a bit. ;)

I think you misunderstand the situation. The CDs should be continuing to cool down NOT reset when you log out.

Yes, it's atrocious that Transwarp is still on CD, yet I haven't logged in on that char for days.

I've done a lot of searching on the forums for these cooldown issues, and couldnt find much at all, which is why I posted in this thread - could you enlighten me as to what the devs have said about these things? Are they ever going to address them?

Thanks in advance for your feedback! :)

The CD rules seem quite simple, unless someone can point out the exceptions to the rules.

The following timers run regardless of being logged in or not.
    • Mission / STF CD
    • STF "ban"
    • Fleet / Reputation projects
    • Doff assignments

All player abilities, regardless of source (Toon, BOff, Ship Equipment, Inventory Item) require you to be logged in for the timer to run.

I can't think of a game play reason why player abilities can't countdown while you're not logged in.

It's probably technical. Originally all player abilities had a short CD, and so may only have the number of seconds until you reuse. The engine will then decrement the counter while the ability is "loaded", but other wise it's not around and so can't. That would explain why most "Ship" abilities don't count down when you're on the Ground.

A solution would be to check the last time you had logged in, and if it was longer then say 15mins, reset all the ability counters back to zero. The tricky bit would be that you would have to do this for both space and ground setup before it let you on, which would extend the start up time. Alternatively you could mess about with a couple of "flags" to denote if a reset could be done. But it's faff for a "nice to have". I'd something more useful changes were made.

on some things the cd works when logged off some only when logged in just as with some things that only cd when your in ground mode and some only in space, that's just the way it is, and some the cd works anyway.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

I've noticed this with consoles too, like saucer seperation or aquarius escort. If you unequip it to try something else, or switch ships, the cooldown pauses where it was and resumes when you switch back or log back in. I don't see it as a huge problem though. Be happy this isn't true for the reputation system.

I agree many of these cooldowns arent a huge problem - I could live with the space skills going on hold when on the ground and vice versa (even tho I don't see it being too difficult to address).

If I had to look at all the CDs, the ones that are the biggest bug-bear for me that I'd really like to see fixed though are our transwarp and freight trader, as these are supposed to make our game play experience more enjoyable - less of a hassle even - not having to warp back to ESD or the nearest SB every time to access mail, exchange, merchants etc.

Even if it were only these two that were fixed I'd be a very happy person :)
