Ship question...

treyesnowtreyesnow Member Posts: 4 Arc User
Just wondering this, and please don't murder me for being uneducated in star trek (Secret: I've only ever seen the latest movies :D ) but...

Why are there no ships that specialize in broadside attacks like a traditional ship?

I just thought it would be awesome if a ship was released that had Port/Starboard ship slots instead of Fore and Aft and only able to mount Cannons, Dual cannons, Torps and beam banks.

These ships would be classified as a Cruiser, have a turn rate of 5 or 6, and be built possibly 1 Fore, 3 Port, 3 Starboard, 1 Aft (or no Fore/Aft) and play as a siege unit (Classic Battleship/Destroyer)

Thoughts?

Oh and please, this is just an idea, don't throw a lore fit. \o.o/

With the way beam arrays have that overlapping arc on either side, cruisers actually do specialize in broadsiding. If you went 8 arrays, targets to either side of you could eat all 8 of them at once, as opposed to fore and aft where it'd only be 4 at a time.

Aye but at the cost of weapon power.

I'm speaking of ships that can utilize CANNONS on the sides :)

As they work now, ships can only mount cannnons/duals/banks on the Fore of specific ships. What I'm proposing is a new ship with Port/Starboard slots so one can broadside cannons, not beam arrays.

    Big difference my friend.

There are a growing number of tricks that let you mitigate that drain. As far as I know, the current record-holder for measured damage-per-second is done using beam arrays in broadside. Its gotten kinda ridiculous actually. :D So yeah there's no cannon broadsiding, but there's no real need for it either.

Port/starbord slots would be far worse than what we have now. 7 beams and a KCB is better because you can have all 8 on 1 single target in broadside mode. To get all 8 on a single target with port/starboard you would need to be flying towards them or away from them and limit the time you can sustain it to strafing runs. If you are going to be doing strafing runs you would be better off with an escort to be able to turn around to make the next run as fast as possible.

Mounting cannons in a port/starboard arrangement would be terrible because 4 of the weapns will be wasted as they point off into empty space or at a non targeted enemy. Weapons not firing in combat are not weapons at all. Why cannons are good for escorts is the cannon fore and turret aft arrangement that allows the aft weapons to be firing alongside the fore cannons. On a broadside ship that arrangement wouldnt work the same if you ever flown a beam boat you would know that if an enemy on port is destroyed and the next is starbord you just target and begin turning around it rather than do a 180 to swap facings. That would limit total preasure damage that a broadside does. But then what do you fire at the enemy if you are flying towards them with cannons on port and starboard? nothing until you position yourself and then it is half the weapons you have.

I say NO to port/starboard weapon slots unless they are completely new slots rather than moved.

    *edit
Weapon drain is easily mitigated. plasmonic leach, energy siphon, power overcap, and the weapon cruiser command. 7-8 beam arrays are not an issue with maintaining 100+ weapon power and easily 125 sustained 100% of the time during combat. If you have problems with the weapon drain then you need to to rething the build and how to stop the drain.
