Is it worth having? I know it drains power but is that problematic if you use weapon batteries or aux to batteries?

Depends on what you want to do with it. BO is great if you're on an escort or cannon boat, as mounting a dual beam or the experimental array is a good supplement to your cannon damage or a high-spike-damage replacement for a torpedo.

It's also good in PVP for overwhelming an enemy shield facing just long enough to open up with a cannon volley or torp strike.

For Cruisers and beam boats it might be less useful since most cruisers have limited tactical slots that might be better served by mounting things like Tactical Team, Attack PAtterns, and Beam: Fire At Will.

To answer your question, Weapon Batteries are the perfect solution to a Beam Overload's temporary power drain. Pop one right before it fires to get more damage out of it, or pop one right after to keep up your power for the followup. An Aux-to-batt skill isn't strictly relevant since it's mainly used as cooldown reduction, which is good for BO, but not for the same reason using a Weapons Batter is good.

Personally I always pack weapons batteries no matter my ship, because even as an Engineer with armloads of power-supplementing skills I can still be vulnerable to the Subsystem-targeting tholians or similar foes. In fact I'm thinking of bringing along Engine batteries as well, since the Voth are pretty big on shutting down my damn engines.

Another way to think about Beam Overload an Energy Weapon equivalent of a High Yield Torpedo ship. Except that BO is a 360 degree ship. It's something to think about when flying small skyscracper, er Carrier or other large Cruiser.
