I was looking at stowiki.org and was curious what you guys thought was the biggest issue with it content wise. I know the search is terrible but besides that what do you think needs to be changed/updated on it to make it easier for people especially new people to make it more worthwhile?

A few things that are the most frustrating for players using the wiki:

    1. Make sure there is info at the destination of a link. Sound stupidly obvious, but there a lot of red entries for things like equipment and such that go no where, and it may be hard to find the info they are looking for in game. I have had to do web searches for basic equipment stats that should be in the wiki.

    2. Mission walkthoughs.

    3. Fleet equipment stats.

    4. Make sure things that talk about game mechanics are correct. For an example, see this: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=905281

heh some people update without actually knowing unfortunately. If you see anything else or anything else along the lines of what you mentioned earlier just post here.

Most frustrating thing about the wiki is that there are a LOT of people complaining about missing/incorrect/outdated info while not lifting a finger themselves. It's a frakking wiki, you don't even need to register to edit pages.

Very true. there is quite a bit of data on the wiki it takes a lot of time to update stuff. Especially since most people do it without creating modules and such.

Besides the fact that no one reads the Wiki? Seriously, I had to disable Zone because people REFUSE to spend 30 seconds reading the Wiki. Direct quote: "I don't want to look it up. Just tell me." They want someone else to do the work for them. When I was in school, reading cheat sheets was considered lazy. Now people are too lazy to even read the cheat sheets. I mean really. The Wiki is there for a reason. Grow up. Do the research yourself. Stop depending on everyone else to do the work for you. Click on Community, Go to Wiki, (Or if you use Steam, like I do, then just hit Shift+Tab and click on Wiki.) Bookmark the page, bring it back up when you need it, problem solved.

But apart from that, one major issue indeed is that much of the information is either outdated, or simply WRONG. I lost count of the times I had to edit the Wiki page myself because in game ship information was something completely different from what the Wiki said. Case in point, Wiki said the Tal'Shiar Destroyer Escort turn rate was less than the Odyssey. Sorry, NO. Needless to say, yes, I did create a profile there so I could fix the matters myself.

I do fix matters as I see them, but alas, I am only one man. Let me know if anything needs fixing, and I will do my best. But I cannot bring the Wiki up to date by myself. We need people who know their way around STO to step up and start pouring stuff into the Wiki so we can educate the masses.

As for the walkthroughs? That is something beyond my ability. I would end up simply telling everyone to stay behind the bomber Engineer (me) and let their (my) mines take care of all the drones.

    /end grumpy rant

I will confess, adding an image onto a page is entirely beyond my abilities too.

The wiki can definitely be confusing. I'm just looking to see what most people think needs to be fixed. There are definitely many things out of date but got to start somewhere. I've made quite a few changes over the last month or so but, as many of pointed out, its not a one man job.

I waged a holy war against some of the more persistent errors on the wiki some time ago, like clarifying that Gamma Orionis and systems therein are in neither the Gamma or Delta Quadrants, fixing mechanics errors, ship stat errors, and walkthrough problems. I was planning to expand into filling in missing walkthroughs and maybe some other stuff, but I found most of the changes I made were reverted, and eventually I gave up.

So, yeah: Having wrong information aggressively protected from correction is an issue. Maybe they've fixed that, but in the interim it still cost the wiki a lot of edits and guides I was planning, and has made a lot of the advice givers on the forum warn new players not to blindly trust the site.

When it comes to mechanics, part of the problem is that there can be a lot of misinformation about what is actually correct. Since Cryptic rarely details exactly how things work, it's left to players to try and conduct controlled tests and reverse engineer it. Sometimes you can get guidance from a comment a dev made in an interview or forum post, but there is no official documentation on subject beyond what the tool tips say. So people will tend to go with whatever hypothesis they heard first, or found most plausible, and stick with it. Even if it's later proven false by a better hypothesis, they may not have heard about it, or refuse to believe it because they "feel" more powerful doing it their way. That will lead to edit wars on the wiki if somebody tries to replace a popular belief about game mechanics, despite the fact that their edit may reflect the current best research on the subject.

So tl;dr it's like every other wiki on the web. People are full of TRIBBLE, but don't realize they're full of TRIBBLE, and will therefore revert your legitimate edits. :-/

The biggest issue, as many others have pointed out... is the amount of misinformation on the wiki contributed by ignorant players who have no idea what they're talking about.

That said, there is still plenty of information on stowiki.org that is actually accurate and for most questions, it is still something you can consult. But just like any wiki, the ultimate solution is to read it -- then do your own research on the topic and see if things add up.

Because there's just as much misinformation and ignorance on the STO forums as there are on the STOWiki. Your best bet is to consult either the wiki or the forums to point you in the right direction, but to take the initiative and discover things on your own.

Cryptic puts misinformation in their own game. STOWiki puts misinformation on the Wiki. And people on the forums put in misinformation on the forums.

Use it as a guide, not as a bible.

I could start a stowiki account and impart my knowledge and make some much-needed edits, but if I did that? I'd really have no time to play the game or post on the forums. That level of dedication would require a paycheck.

If you're good at something, never do it for free. :P

It indeed should be treated as a library. For example, this colour coded page describes what abilities are captain trained, and what comes from bridge officers only, and is also accurate enough to where you can use it to virtually plan out your entire build, ground and space. This page has all the Lore answers. And of course many other useful pages. We just need to make sure they STAY accurate, and then start directing people to actually READ the Wiki. All our work is for nought if no one uses the information we painstakingly spent the time to arrange.
