My main character (tac) has been flying the Fleet Excelsior for a long time now, and it's a great ship! Recently though, I was wondering if it might be time to put him something a little more modern. From what I've seen of the ships available to me right now, I've basically narrowed it down to either the Regent, the Odyssey, or stick with the Excelsior.
Really, I'm just looking for advice and opinions on the ships. I don't play PvP, I'd prefer to use beams than cannons, and I can't stand the looks of the Avenger (to me it looks like they crashed it into the space dock door before taking it out for trials). The Regent/Excelsior comparison seems fairly straightforward, but what about the Odyssey? Is it worth getting the triple pack, or is only getting the tactical version more sensible?
Perhaps there's another (non-fleet, we're not high enough level yet) tac cruiser that I've forgotten about?

This character is why I don't play my Romulan any more. Tovan Khev is NOT my BFF! Get him off my bridge!
The Odyssey has its place. It's a flexible ship rather than a single-focus ship. You can set it up to support the team, tank damage, deal some decent damage if not 1st place level damage. If RP and immersion is important to you then you can totally get in on the whole 'this is Starfleet's latest and greatest cruiser design' and your sister ship is none other than the Enterprise-F.
The Regent is awesome, my eng flies the Fleet version. I've set it up as an aux2batt killing machine that can do a little bit of team support with an Extend Shields 3 and eng team on standby. It helps that I absolutely love the Sovereign-class and I think it combines the perfect balance of elegant form with efficient function.
Tac Team 1, Beam Fire at Will 2, Attack Pattern: Beta 2
Torp Spread 1.
Use the Universal BOFF as Science with Polarise Hull 1 and Hazard Emitters 2
Your two Engineering BOFFs really depend on Aux2Bat or other build.
2 Neutroniums (+turn if you go fleet), Assimilated Module & Plasmonic Leech
Sci +Threat Consoles, Probably Shield Emitters or Particle Generators if you have Eject Warp Plasma. 1 Field Generator
Tac consoles to match your beams.
You come head on to your enemy with 5 weapons firing forward, you turn alongside them to gain 7 and when you have 180 you should have a shield facing down and can fire the Torpedo onto bare hull.
Personally I don't like the Odyssey in looks and that 1 turn difference (Oddy 6, Sovereign/Regent 7) really seems to make a difference.
With the Odyssey you either buy the 3 pack so you run the Chevron Seperation with the Tactical version or you buy the Tactical version and ditch the Aquarius.
I'm not a fan of the Regent looks (It's the Pylons) but I can fly her as a Sovereign and that Torpedo is quite handy.
I was once DKnight1000, apparently I had taken my own name so now I'm DKnight0001. If I ask you a question it is not an insult but a genuine attempt to understand why. When I insult you I won't be discreet about it, I will be precise and to the point stupid.
so long as the ship you get has 3 tac consoles you should be ok.
Not quite true in the case of the Sci Oddy - stacking Sensor Analysis boosts damage more than the 3rd Tac Console against a big-HP boss, leading to more damage done over time. Its a viable alternative if you care more for the tough targets.
Well, with the preferences you mentioned - it basically boils down to those 3 ships you already mentioned.
In all fairness, your Excelsior is a great ship and still good to go for any content. I'm still considering it in the top cruisers in STO. But if you're looking at getting some more modern ship with the 2409 vibe, then it's between the Regent and Odyssey. There are other great cruisers like the Yamaguchi for ex., but they don't really give that 25-th century vibe of Cryptic's ships in STO.
The Regent and Odyssey both have their place in game.
The Regent is pretty much a beast of a cruiser, it melts everything down with beams and the new comm arrays will only make it preform better at what it's best at - dealing damage. This ship is for the tactical flavor.
The Odyssey is a very good multi role ship, the flexibility of the Boff seats, and the flexibility of the setup (if you have the 3-pack) allows playing around with miscellaneous builds and filling different roles with this cruiser based on the mood you're in. The tactical one is a very solid damage dealer, but this is one of those ships that can take fleet support, healing and tanking to the next level. It really excels at those.
Thanks for the advice guys, it's given me something to think about at least. I admit, back when I bought the Excelsior, the main attraction was the transwarp drive. However, now that's not so much of a draw as I have Diplomacy and Fleet transwarps, and I appreciate the ship as an excellent beam combat cruiser. I think if I got the Regent, I would use the Sovereign skin, like dknight0001 said, the forward swept pylons kind of bug me. On the other hand, the Odyssey has the advantage in RP immersion, as my characters and the small fleet I'm part of basically operate under the command of my main character as the Admiral in charge of the task force.
Can you still try out the Odyssey three pack via the Tribble server? I had a KDF character test drive the Bortasqu' on Tribble before Legacy of Romulus came out.

Thing about the Regent (and Avenger, for that matter) is that its VERY close to the Excelsior you already have, being basically the same ship with a different ensign and the wide-angle torpedo. Thats not saying its a bad ship at all, just that if you're looking for a changeup you won't find much difference so much as refinement.
The Odyssey on the other hand is more significantly different, slow enough that you really need you plan your maneuvers ahead of time, but much more flexible with greater potential as a healer/tank. Doesn't have quite the punch as the Excelsior, but can come close while wearing other hats besides.
Lastly if its just wanting a Sovereign to take for a spin for a change, there's always the Mirror Universe Star Cruiser. Sovereign looks, Star Cruiser layout, and a lot cheaper than a new c-store ship.

If you love the excelsior then stick with it. I am a through and through cruiser captain, who pretty much flew everything else before landing on the fleet excel. I love it The grass is greener where you water it.
Well i have all of them. Love the Excelsior i really do, the Fleet versions is boss.
The Oddy has its place and outside of its looks which i like i find little use for it because i just cant often do what i want with it.
The regent i fly regularly on my Eng, and yes with those new commnads it is super boss. I like the boff layout for the most part, and i actually fly it as a sovereign skin with the regent nacelles i think it looks really nice that way (personal preference)
So its really a tough call, as you already have the excelsior, go fleet its cheaper than buying one of the others, cause you might as well get the oddy 3-pack fo 50, instead of just the one for 25 and then wanting the others later(which i did and was dumb), or the 25 for the regent.
All can be very fun, but the oddy takes work and getting used to.

The Avenger beats them all. But, if you want something more iconic, I'd say fleet regent. (with sovereign look enabled). Just be sure to buy the zen regent first for the wide angle torpedo. That's something you want in your toolbox even if it isn't something you're going to be using in your main build all the time. I bought four modules for $20 for the superior fleet version not wanting to pay $5 more for the "weaker" zen variant and $5 more on top of that for a fleet ship module to buy the fleet variant, but in hindsight I find myself wishing I had the wide angle for when I'm broadsiding.
I myself regret not getting the odyssey bundle pack but could only afford 1 so got the ody ops, its has one hell of a survival rate though it can turn poor at first (especially when u are used to turn rate like the Excelsior) but in time u can learn how to counter it. Im not a huge fan of the regent look (still 1000 time better than the whale avenger) it does seem a lot closer to the Excelsior.
The ody is a good beam boat and i still enjoy playing it over my carrier and fleet recon but in the end its down to choice.

Between these three, "stick to the Excelsior" is your cheapest and most effective option. The Odyssey is simply not an idea Tactical Cruiser.

As a Tactlcal Cruiser, the Oddy was rendered pointless when the Fleet Excelsior came out. It's an extremely good Multirole Support Cruiser, but for pure tactical combat prowess, the Oddy's console and boff layouts leave something to be desired. The Oddy is not the cruiser of the Tac Captain, being better suited for an Engi or Sci. But since you don't play PvP, such roles are of little to no use to you.
Mostly the same as my Regent build basically swapping my AP: O 1, with EPtE 3.
Combined with promiscuous use of the new cruiser commands, i am damn near unstoppable.
Still getting used to a few things, need to rack up some more EC to get better Mag regulators, or waiting until the Fleet Tac consoles.
Right now i output about 6.3K in DPS, not low by any standards, and not as high as id like it. But i am unwilling to ruin my survivability for more Damage.

More points in favor of sticking to the Excelsior, although the Avenger can run 5 dual beams for a forward-assault beam configuration...
They probably did, but from the look of it, the door lost.
